NTPC halts FGD work at 5 plants after government exemption; 7 GW projects hit
has asked Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (
BHEL
) to halt installation of
flue-gas desulphurisation
(FGD) systems at five under-construction
coal-fired power plants
days after the government exempted most thermal power plants from FGD requirement.
The stop work request covers Lara-II, Singrauli-III, Sipat-III, Darlipalli-II, and Telangana-II plants. This translates into desulphurisation works being stalled on projects with over 7 GW capacity that are under construction. "Considering the recent notification issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, BHEL is requested to keep all activities related to FGD for the aforementioned projects on hold until further communication," NTPC said in a communication to BHEL.

The ministry in a gazette notification on July 11 exempted coal-fired power plants outside a 10-km radius of populated and polluted cities from a 2015 mandate to install FGD systems in phases. BHEL is the country's primary supplier of FGD systems, which remove sulphur dioxide from the plants' exhaust gases.

"BHEL has some foreign collaborators in FGD projects and may seek compensation from NTPC for the stop work order," an official aware of the NTPC letter told ET.
NTPC had floated several tenders and installed, or is in the process of installing, multiple FGD systems after a 2015 directive made them mandatory for all coal-based plants to meet revised environmental standards.
Live Events
Mails sent to NTPC and BHEL remained unanswered till the time of publishing.
As of February, 537 thermal units totalling 204 GW capacity were identified for installation of FGDs. Of them, installation was completed in 49 units, while contracts were awarded or were under implementation in 211 units. Another 180 units were under various stages of the tendering process, according to the government.
CareEdge Ratings said the FGD exemption for the majority of the plants, with 145 GW capacity, is positive for private companies or independent power producers, as it is a costly pollution control system.

Kim Jong Un's sister dismisses South Korea's peace proposals, calls it 'miscalculation'
North Korea has no interest in any policy or proposals for reconciliation from South Korea, the powerful sister of its leader Kim Jong Un said on Monday in the first response to South Korean liberal President Lee Jae Myung 's peace overtures . Kim Yo Jong , who is a senior North Korean ruling party official and is believed to speak for the country's leader, said Lee's pledge of commitment to South Korea-U.S. security alliance shows he is no different from his hostile predecessor. As gestures aimed at easing tensions, Lee suspended loudspeaker broadcasts blasting anti-North propaganda across the border and banned the flying of leaflets by activists that had angered Pyongyang. Live Events Kim, the North Korean official, said those moves are merely a reversal of ill-intentioned activities by South Korea that should never have been initiated in the first place. "In other words, it's not even something worth our assessment," she said. "We again make clear the official position that whatever policy is established in Seoul or proposal is made, we are not interested, and we will not be sitting down with South Korea and there is nothing to discuss." There has been cautious optimism in the South that the North may respond positively and may even show willingness to re-engage in dialogue, particularly after Pyongyang also shut off its loudspeakers, a move Lee said was quicker than expected. Still, Lee, whose government is in the midst of tough negotiations with Washington to avert punishing tariffs that President Donald Trump has threatened against a string of major trading partners, has said U.S. alliance is the pillar of South Korea's diplomacy. "Through efforts in the areas of politics, economic security and culture, we will strengthen the South Korea-U.S. alliance that was sealed in blood," Lee said in remarks commemorating the anniversary of the Korean War armistice on Sunday. North Korea also marked the anniversary which it calls victory day with events including a parade in Pyongyang, although state media reports indicated it was at a relatively lesser scale compared to some previous years. The two Koreas, the United States and China, which are the main belligerents in the 1950-53 Korean War, have not signed a peace treaty.

Nifty resistance seen at around 25,500 levels: Analysts
The Nifty closed below the 25,000 level on Friday after declining almost 1%, and this weakness is likely to continue in the short term, said analysts. While levels around 24,500 are expected to act as key support for the benchmark, resistance is likely around the 25,200–25,500 zone. VIX levels could also see an uptick, especially closer to the monthly expiry. However, pharma stocks could continue their upward trajectory. The benchmark index traded with a negative bias and closed below the psychological 25,000 level with a bearish formation. Bank Nifty outperformed the benchmark index and closed with an indecisive candlestick formation on the weekly chart. FIIs have continued to add shorts on index futures, and their net short positions have reached 86%. Historically, the market has witnessed a short-covering rally once shorts reach the 86-89% zone. Traders can expect volatile momentum in all indices during the monthly expiry week. Nifty has support at 24,500 and resistance at 25,200–25,500 levels. Bank Nifty has support at 56,000 and resistance at 57,200–58,000 levels. Trading strategies for the week Pharma has seen outperformance in last two weeks and may continue its outperformance. Biocon is the top pick; Cipla and Syngene are in accumulation zone. RIL has reached near weekly support level; investors can accumulate at current levels. Jindal Steel and Power may continue upward momentum. Nifty Defence index has broken below a key support level; HAL and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders have closed with bearish candlestick formation, and a rally is a short-selling opportunity. Investors can look to accumulate Capri Global Capital, Saksoft, RACL Geartech, and NLC India at current levels. Live Events Agencies NILESH JAIN VP, EQUITY TECHNICAL & DERIVATIVE RESEARCH, CENTRUM BROKING Where is the Nifty headed this week? The Nifty extended its losing streak for the fourth consecutive week. It faced strong resistance near its 21-DMA, currently around 25,300, which remains a key hurdle. It breached the support level of 25,000, which aligns with its 50-DMA, and this zone is now expected to act as a resistance. A decisive move back above 25,000 could trigger short covering, pushing the index towards 25,200. For the week ahead, the Nifty is likely to trade within a range of 24,500–25,200. The VIX seems to have found support near its multi-month low around 10-mark and has started inching higher, suggesting potential rise in market volatility. Trading strategies for the week With the monthly expiry approaching, markets are expected to remain volatile in coming week. We recommend focusing on stock-specific and sectoral opportunities rather than broader index moves. We are seeing sectoral rotation, with market focus shifting back towards defensive segments. The Pharma Index is exhibiting strength by forming a higher top–higher bottom structure, indicating positive short-term trend. Stocks such as Lupin, Cipla, Torrent Pharma, and Apollo Hospitals look well-positioned and can be considered for accumulation. In the insurance space, SBI Life and HDFC Life appear better placed. The IT sector is weighing down indices. The overall structure remains weak. As such, it is advisable to stay away from the sector for now. Additionally, oil & gas and FMCG sectors are also showing signs of weakness and lack nearterm conviction. RUCHIT JAIN HEAD, TECHNICAL RESEARCH, MOTILAL OSWAL FIN SERVICES Where is the Nifty headed next week? After an 18% rally from the April lows, Nifty has entered a corrective phase this July. Index closed the week below its 50-DEMA, and the RSI on daily and weekly charts continues to show a negative crossover. The index is expected to trade within a range of 24,600–25,250, and a decisive breakout above will be needed for resumption of uptrend. In case of a breakdown below 24,600, next support lies in previous swing low zone of 24,500–24,450. Trading strategies for the week Midcap and smallcap indices remain in a consolidation phase. Most sectoral indices are showing signs of a pause or pullback. We continue to advise short-term traders to stay cautious. Pharma and healthcare could outperform, and selective opportunities can be considered in Torrent Pharma, IPCA Labs, and Max Health

Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei accused of sleeping, getting high all day in shocking Mossad report
A shocking social media post linked to Israel's Mossad sparked international attention after making bold claims about Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. A social media account connected to Israel's national intelligence agency accused Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, of sleeping and using drugs, causing global outrage. These explosive allegations come amid growing frustration within Iran over deteriorating living conditions and government secrecy. The contentious post, written in Farsi, mocks Khamenei while highlighting Iran's escalating domestic issues, which range from a lack of electricity to water shortages and civil unrest, as per a report by Fox News. "Water, electricity, life!" "Consuming drugs and conversing with spirits are not desirable traits for someone leading a country,' the account stated. Live Events Although the Israeli intelligence agency has not formally verified the account's affiliation, the post was made by a new X account with a premium subscription that was created last month and purported to be the official Mossad spokesperson in Farsi, Iran's official language, as per a report by Fox News. Why is this causing a stir inside and outside Iran? Over the past month, the account has posted multiple times regarding Khamenei's health and the situation in Iran, including the lack of electricity, clean water, and education. "To everyone contacting us through private messages, for your own security, please ensure you are using a VPN," the bio for the account reads. The designation of the recently appointed, albeit unnamed, commander of the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, the command center of the Iranian Armed Forces, was covered in a post on the account. The account linked to Mossad claimed to already know the name and invited Iranians to submit their guesses after Iran refused to disclose the commander's identity for his protection, according to a report by Iran's semi-official news agency, Tasnim News Agency, which is affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as per a report by Fox News. In response, the account advised the "lucky winner" who correctly identified Ali Abdollahi Aliabadi to "contact us privately to receive your prize." Is there credibility to these explosive accusations? While the account's tone is unconventional, even sarcastic, analysts say the information it shares carries weight. Beny Sabti, a former IDF Persian-language officer and Iran researcher at Israel's Institute for National Security Studies, said, 'Some of the details this account has posted could only have come from Mossad.' If proven credible, the claims could further tarnish Khamenei's image in a country already shaken by unrest, economic strain, and a widening generational divide. ALSO READ: National chicken finger day: Here's how to get a free chicken finger this July 27 The account's aggressive claims and humorous jabs are not typical of the Mossad's public relations style, but two intelligence analysts informed Israeli news outlet JFeed that the odd Mossad-affiliated account seems genuine. It has previously been suggested that Khamenei is a drug user; in 2022, an Iranian scholar claimed that the Iranian Supreme Leader frequently takes drugs. At the time, Nour Mohamed Omara stated on a Turkish TV station connected to the Muslim Brotherhood, "Many viewers do not know this, but Khamenei himself uses drugs." "He has a special village in Balochistan, where the drugs used by the leader are produced," the scholar continued. "This village is run by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and no one is allowed in." Drug use was openly deemed "un-Islamic" by the Ayatollah following the Iranian Revolution of 1979. Death is a possible punishment for drug-related offenses. Currently, Tehran has not released a formal statement regarding the allegations; however, Iranian state media has increased its criticism of Israel's online influence operations. In the meantime, the conversation surrounding Khamenei's alleged private behavior continues to trend. FAQs What allegations did Mossad's Farsi account make about Khamenei? According to the account, Khamenei spends the majority of his time sleeping or using drugs, while Iranians struggle to meet their basic needs. Is the Mossad-linked account verified as official? The Israeli government has not confirmed it, but experts believe the information provided indicates authenticity.
