Sex crimes probe into Penang doctor still on, says minister
PETALING JAYA : Complaints against a Penang doctor accused of sexual crimes are taken seriously and the case is still under investigation by the health ministry, says Dzulkefly Ahmad.
The health minister said the case comes under the purview of health director-general Dr Mahathar Abd Wahab and a designated committee tasked with reviewing professional conduct and disciplinary issues concerning doctors.
'If there's a complaint, we will attend to it seriously. Everyone who complains, we will follow through,' he told reporters after launching the 'Crisis and Community: Covid-19 in Malaysia' book at Gerakbudaya here today.
On Thursday, the Women's Centre for Change questioned why the doctor based in Penang has yet to be charged when he has been arrested four times over alleged sexual crimes.
The women's group questioned why he was still allowed to treat patients and take locum shifts at private clinics despite the multiple allegations.
The suspect had been arrested on four occasions for offences allegedly committed at a hospital and three private clinics, with the most recent arrest on July 21.
A woman claimed she was molested by the doctor during a medical examination at a private clinic in Bayan Baru on June 29.
WCC urged the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) to suspend the doctor's practising licence pending legal proceedings.
Acting Penang police chief Alwi Zainal Abidin confirmed the doctor was recently arrested again and later released on bail.
He also said prosecutors had ordered the cops to include the recent case in its overall investigation before submitting the probe papers to them.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — Two brothers claimed trial at the Shah Alam Magistrates' Court today to charges of kidnapping and voluntarily causing hurt to a man from an incident in Bukit Puchong that went viral last week. Malay daily newspaper Berita Harian reported that its minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the ban, which fell under the Federal Government's jurisdiction, must be implemented carefully, planned by considering legal, enforcement and public health factors. 'A thorough review is underway to evaluate the effectiveness of current controls and to determine whether more comprehensive policies are needed to protect public health,' he said during a question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat. Dr Dzulkefly was responding to Datuk Ahmad Saad (PN–Pokok Sena), who asked about the ministry's stance on several state governments that have stopped issuing licenses for vape businesses. He welcomed the move by six states, which were Johor, Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis, Kedah and Pahang to discontinue or refuse renewals for vape retail licenses. As part of enforcement efforts, the ministry will launch an integrated nationwide operation called Ops Selamat Paru-Paru (Ops Selamat PaPa) this Friday to ensure effective implementation of Act 852. 'We want Act 852 enforcement to go beyond license withdrawals, as done by the six states, because vape products are still widely accessible,' Dr Dzulkefly said.

Ride it or lose it: Loke urges Kedah folks to ride Bas.My and keep RM78.5m service alive
ALOR SETAR, July 28 — The Ministry of Transport is calling on the public to make full use of the stage bus service introduced under the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme, which is being rolled out in phases this year. Minister Anthony Loke said the government has allocated substantial funding to support this initiative, particularly in urban areas where the service is in operation. 'To convince the Finance Ministry to continue providing allocations to us, I need to show data and performance — that this service truly benefits the people. 'If the public doesn't use this service despite the affordable fares and convenience offered, we will struggle to justify further funding for its expansion,' Loke told reporters after launching the Kota Setar service today. Also present were Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who is also the co-chairman of the Kedah State Development Action Council, and Kedah State Agriculture, Plantation and Transport Committee chairman Dzowahir Ab Ghani. Loke said that the federal government has allocated RM78.5 million over five years, or RM15.7 million annually, to operate 13 SBST routes in Kedah. The Kota Setar service, which began operations in stages on June 1, has recorded approximately 30,000 users monthly, with numbers expected to reach 40,000 by the end of this month. 'We hope more people will use it. The cost to the government is fixed at RM15.7 million a year for Kedah, regardless of how many passengers use the service. 'The more passengers we have, the lower the average cost per passenger, making the government's investment more worthwhile,' the minister remarked.
