Trainer Matthew Smith plots feature race boilover with Astero in the 2025 Winter Stakes at Rosehill
Smith is preparing to chase a two-state stakes double with Millie De Lune ($4.40) set to chase a valuable black type victory in the Group 3 $300,000 Winx Guineas (1600m) at the Sunshine Coast.
Astero ($26) is a knockout hope in Sydney where the son of Zoustar will be chasing a maiden stakes victory in partnership with jockey Andrew Adkins.
Smith believes Astero is more than capable of claiming a feature win and his seven-year-old wasn't far away last start when finishing 1-1/2 lengths off Headley Grange with a third in the Listed Civic Stakes.
An awkward draw in barrier 10 makes life tougher this time around.
'He just hasn't had much luck with the gates,' Smith said.
'You kind of need luck in these races.
'It's a fairly even field with not much between them. Headley Grange, which beat him the other day, has beaten him a couple of times but we still haven't had a decent run.
'He is still not getting beaten far and has the ability to win one of these races but just needs everything to go right like a few others in the field.
'He is going good but the barrier is just no help to him.'
Headley Grange adds the Listed Civic Stakes to his impressive record, and it's a Randwick treble to Jason Collett! 🙌 @PrideRacing @aus_turf_club pic.twitter.com/MWrcwudp8N

Smith will have a strong hand at Rosehill Gardens with World Alliance ($5.50 favourite) is pole position to make it back-to-back victories in the Foundation Female Member Benchmark 88 (1200m).
World Alliance added to his fantastic winning record last start when scoring his sixth victory in 16 starts with a slashing success over 1100m at Canterbury.
Jockey Jason Collett will continue his association with the son of Rubick.
'He was bloody good last start and is going good too,' Smith said.
'I am really happy with him. His work has been great and he is going well.
'His weight is right. We have given him a month between runs and he is fresh and well.
'I think he will run very well again.'

Golden Straand is another Smith galloper in winning form.
The smart son of Snitzel is only lightly-raced as rising four-year-old with both of his starts coming this preparation.
Golden Straand faced greenly on debut when second at Wyong before keeping his find on the job for an emphatic maiden victory at Gosford.
He will get the chance to back up the win with Jay Ford aboard in the The Agency Real Estate Benchmark 72 Handicap (1300m).
'He is a nice horse but starting racing a little bit later, he lacks a bit of racecraft and smarts in a race environment,' Smith said.
'I probably would have liked to find something easier for him but he will run there and is a nice horse, going well.
'He is doing some stupid things but it's probably just racecraft.
'He did it easier the other day but we saw what he did the other day when he ran all over the joint.
'I really like the horse and I think he will get there but you have to keep racing horses like him while they are fit and well.'
Anythink Goes ($23) is expected to run a bold race in the Asahi Super Dry Benchmark 78 Handicap (1400m) after running a close second to in-form sprinter Thunderlips at Royal Randwick last start on June 7.
In Queensland, Millie De Lune is dropping back in trip in pursuit of valuable black type following her fast-finishing fourth over 1800m at Royal Randwick last month.

The Last Say: Tips, inside mail, market movers and the latest track conditions for today's racing
Trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr have ambitions of a feature-race treble across three states on Saturday. At Rosehill Gardens, their classy import Welwal ($8) looks ready to win in the Listed $200,000 Winter Stakes (1400m). Then on Finals Day at Flemington, the Price-Kent stable has promising three-year-old filly Knobelas ($2.25 favourite) chasing a hat-trick of in the Silver Bowl Series Final (1600m) and two-year-old Job Done ($3.10) trying to maintain the perfect start to his race career in the TAB Next Generation Sprinters Final (1200m). Price and Kent also have chances in two of the stakes races at the Sunshine Coast – Grand Impact ($16) in the Listed $300,000 Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) and Hezashocka ($13) in the Listed $300,000 Caloundra Cup (2400m). Meanwhile, there has been some significant betting moves for Ciaron Maher 's boom filly She's An Artist ($1.60 favourite) for the Listed $175,000 Creswick Stakes (1400m) at Flemington, her stablemate Warnie ($2.90 favourite) for the Glasshouse Handicap at Sunshine Coast, and also at Rosehill Gardens for the Joe Pride -trained Cosmonova ($15) for the Foundation Female Member Handicap (1200m). She's An Artist, brilliant winner of her only two starts, opened at $1.80 but is into $1.60 after some big bets with Ladbrokes including $1000 at $1.80 twice, $2000 twice, $1000 4 times, $700 and $650 at $1.75, $1500 and $1300 three times at $1.70 and $1300 at $1.55. Warnie opened at $3.20 but has firmed into $2.80 to win the Glasshouse while Cosmonova's odds have been slashed at Rosehill from $26 to $15 as she attempts to protect her unbeaten record when third-up from a spell. â– â– â– â– â– TRACK CONDITIONS ROSEHILL GARDENS Weather: Cool, mostly sunny day and a forecast top temperature of 17c. Four-Play, Quadzilla: Gilbert Gardiner's best bets for Flemington on Saturday
Form analyst Gilbert Gardiner presents his $200 betting strategy, plus quaddie picks, for the nine-race card at Flemington on Saturday. Form analyst Gilbert Gardiner presents his $200 betting strategy, plus quaddie picks, for the nine-race card at Flemington on Saturday. â– â– â– â– â– $25 each way FROM A DISTANCE (8) at $7/$2.20 Four starts into the three-year-old's first racing campaign some query, but loved the way the Needs Further gelding drove through an interrupted run last start to finish second behind the in-form Taken. Not the clearest path but stuck to the task and got within a length on the post. Favourite KNOBELAS (9) has been super impressive the past two starts, winning by big margins, but faces stronger opposition here. Four starts under the belt for the campaign including the past two at 2000m. The 2500m trip on Saturday looks ideal and gets in a fraction (½ kg) better on the weight scale. Shockletz powered home to win at Flemington two starts back. Wary of BEARINGS (16), finished strongly last start at Flemington. FIELDELO (8) chased the favourite last start and should not be overlooked. More suited at 1200m and has slight weight swing on She's An Artist. 1ST LEG 5, 8 LEG 2, RACE 7 SHOCKLETZ (2) tried hard last start at Flemington but a big weight and sustained gallop ultimately got the better of the emerging stayer. Bearings won a 2230m race – albeit Newcastle Class 1 three back – on a Heavy deck so the extra distance – up to 2500m – unlikely to be an issue. Respect POLITELY DUN (1). Won impressively at Flemington two back and then luckless in the Group 1 Queensland Derby. 2ND LEG 1, 2, 16 LEG 3, RACE 8 OH TOO GOOD (10) could not have been any more impressive last start at Flemington, travelled behind the speed and walloped them. While you were sleeping: Drone defeats dog and Pat Cummins gets a new hat
As Australia's bowlers dutifully made their way through the West Indian batting, players had their attention diverted – with a stray dog stealing the show. Here's what you missed while you were sleeping. CAPS LOCK Pat Cummins' missing baggy green has been replaced. He has sourced a second new Albion cap to replace his fraying original. The Aussie skipper's replacement cap disappeared somewhere between the pre-series photo shoot and the toss of the first Test in Bridgetown. DOG GONE There was an uninvited interloper on the arena early in the second session. But this wasn't an Australia who had indulged too much in the local beverages. Rather it was a stray dog, who initially settled deep in the off-side, before moving around to the on-side. Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood sought to shoo the canine away, but it was the drone camera overhead that led the dog to leave the field, and eventually the stadium, no thanks to the security or ground staff. WHAT A TAKE Australia took two return catches to begin the day in Grenada. Josh Hazlewood removed Kraigg Brathwaite for a duck in the second over, but it was Cummins' diving one-handed effort to remove Keacy Carty that stole the show, with the skipper forcing Carty to edge onto his pad before snaffling the pop-up low to the ground. CORDON HOUSE Marnus Labuschagne will not be denied. The dumped Aussie batter had a good hitout in the nets before play on Friday and then re-emerged in the slip cordon as Australia's quicks had breathers after bowling during the first session. It was an otherwise new-look cordon for the tourists, with Sam Konstas filling in as Steve Smith was stationed at mid-off as he recuperates from his finger injury. WITH OR WITHOUT YOU Having advanced to 4-169 with Brandon King and Shai Hope looking settled, the Windies lost 2-0. Firstly it was Cummins, who as he so often does ended a key partnership by bowling Hope through the gate after it jagged back. The skipper then went off the field for some repairs, in which time King departed for 75, gloving one from Nathan Lyon down the leg-side to a decision reviewed successfully by acting skipper Steve Smith, on the urging of Cameron Green at mid-wicket.
