Students protest in Bangladesh after air force jet crash kills 31
The children, many aged under 12, were about to return home from class on Monday when the Chinese-manufactured F-7 BGI Bangladesh Air Force jet ploughed into their school and burst into flames, trapping pupils in the fire and debris.
The military said it had suffered mechanical failure.
Students from the school and others from nearby colleges protested as two government officials visited the crash site, demanding an accurate death toll and shouting, 'Why did our brothers die? We demand answers!'
Elsewhere in the capital, hundreds of protesting students, some of them waving sticks, broke through the main gate of the federal government secretariat, demanding the resignation of the education adviser, according to local TV footage.
Police baton charged them, fired tear gas and used sound grenades to disperse the crowd, leaving dozens injured, witnesses said. Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Talebur Rahman said they had to use tear gas to disperse the protesters. He said he did not have information on the number of injured.
Rescue workers continued to scour the charred buildings for debris on Tuesday as distressed residents of the area looked on. Some parents were inconsolable.
Abul Hossain broke down as he spoke about his nine-year-old daughter, Nusrat Jahan Anika, killed in the crash. 'I took her to school yesterday morning like every day. I had no idea it would be the last time I would be seeing her,' he said. She was buried on Monday night.
Rubina Akter said her son Raiyan Toufiq had a miraculous escape after his shirt caught fire when he was on a staircase.
'He sprinted to the ground floor and jumped on the grass to douse it,' she said.

Pending dues on land, properties reviewed
ISLAMABAD: The second meeting of the Sub-Committee of the Standing Committee on Housing and Works was held Wednesday at the Federal Government Employees Housing Authority (FGEHA). The meeting was chaired by Member of the National Assembly and Convener of the Sub-Committee, Anjum Aqeel Khan. The purpose of the meeting was to review pending outstanding dues related to land acquisition, payments for built up (BUP) properties and delays in various housing projects. During the meeting, land affectees from sectors, G-14/1, G-15/3, F-14, and F-15 presented their grievances, with particular emphasis on the issue of non-possession in Sector G-14/1. Taking notice of the complaints, the director general instructed that these matters be addressed on a priority basis. He directed the director (land) to engage with the allottees, listen to their concerns, and formulate a practical strategy to ensure early possession. Convener Anjum Aqeel Khan assured that the sub-committee will make every possible effort to resolve the issues of all affected individuals and will maintain close coordination with the relevant departments. Fisheries and Aquaculture Parks: Chinese businessmen seek initiating solarisation
ISLAMABAD: A high-level delegation of Chinese businessmen from the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce (ACFIC) has expressed strong interest in initiating the solarisation of Fisheries and Aquaculture Parks in Pakistan, said a press release. The initiative aims to ensure clean and uninterrupted energy for business operations, enhance efficiency, and attract greater international investment to Pakistan's ports. This development emerged during a meeting held in Islamabad on Wednesday between Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, and a five-member delegation led by Yi Jiang. The ACFIC serves as China's national chamber of commerce for private enterprises, working to promote public-private partnerships and support China's non-public economy. Its key focus areas include industry, trade, manufacturing, technology, and commerce. Speaking to the delegation, Minister Junaid Chaudhry highlighted Pakistan's commitment to harnessing the potential of its blue economy. He noted that the solarization of Fisheries and Aquaculture Parks would mark a significant step toward advancing sustainable maritime development under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework. The meeting reaffirmed Pakistan's resolve to develop environmentally sustainable infrastructure along its coastlines, especially in Gwadar, to unlock new opportunities in seafood processing, marine aquaculture, and logistics—critical components of the nation's blue economy strategy. The minister informed the delegation that Pakistan's blue economy is gaining momentum and contributed approximately USD 1 billion about 0.4% of the national GDP, in the fiscal year 2023–24. He also shared that seafood exports to China reached $125 million last year, signalling growing commercial collaboration between the two nations. Maritime Minister encouraged Chinese investors to explore opportunities in Gwadar's Free Zones. 'The South Free Zone is now fully operational with a modern 2,000-ton capacity cold storage facility,' he said. 'Simultaneously, development in the North Free Zone is progressing steadily.' He emphasised Gwadar Port's potential to emerge as a major regional logistics hub, owing to its strategic location and improving infrastructure. 'Our vision is to develop Gwadar into a clean, energy-efficient, and investor-friendly port,' he stated, reaffirming government support for renewable energy initiatives in the maritime sector. The Chinese delegation welcomed the minister's proposals and discussed potential avenues for collaboration in trade logistics and port operations. 'Gwadar's location near key sea routes, coupled with the incentives offered by Pakistan, makes it an ideal transshipment gateway,' one delegation member noted. Both sides agreed to maintain regular engagement to translate their shared vision into tangible projects that enhance regional connectivity, trade facilitation, and sustainable development of Pakistan's coastal assets. China calls for more engagement with US
China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday called for more engagement with the United States, and warned against confrontations between the two global powers, according to a statement from the Chinese foreign ministry. Wang made the comments during a meeting in Beijing with a delegation of US businesses that include executives from Goldman Sachs, Boeing and Apple, the ministry said. "China is willing to enhance engagement with the US, avoid misjudgment, manage differences, and explore cooperation," Wang was quoted as saying. His remarks came a day after top Chinese and US negotiators wrapped up a latest round of trade talks in Stockholm, with both sides agreeing to seek an extension of their 90-day tariff truce struck in May. Wang said that China-US relations are affected by global developments and exert a "profound impact" on international dynamics. "China and the US need to establish more channels of communication and consultation, view each other objectively, rationally, and pragmatically, and foster a correct strategic perception," he said, urging both countries to reject "unilateralism and bullying". He encouraged US companies to maintain confidence in the Chinese market, and welcomed them to continue to invest in China, the ministry statement said. A high-level delegation of US executives is visiting China this week and has also met with China's commerce and industry ministers.
