Israeli parliament committee advances expulsion of Arab Israeli parliamentarian over social media post

LONDON: An Israeli parliamentary committee has advanced a motion to expel Arab-Israeli Knesset member Ayman Odeh over a social media post in which he called for freedom for Israelis and Palestinians.
Odeh, a veteran member of the Knesset and head of the Hadash-Ta'al party, faced a second hearing on Monday. In a heated session, lawmakers, including members of the opposition Yesh Atid and National Unity parties, voted 14-2 in favor of advancing impeachment proceedings.
'The opposition crossed a red line today,' Odeh said in a statement after the vote. 'Instead of fighting the Kahanist government, it collaborated with them in crushing democratic space. Some of them hate us more than they love democracy.
'This is not an opposition — it is a coalition in disguise. And this is the final signature on the Nation-State Law,' he said, referring to the 2018 legislation that officially defines Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people.
The motion targeted a January post in which Odeh welcomed the release of Palestinian security prisoners as part of a hostage exchange deal with Hamas.
'I'm happy to see the hostages and prisoners released,' Odeh wrote in the social media post cited in the motion filed by Likud Knesset member Avichay Boaron. 'Next we must free both peoples from the burden of the occupation. We were all born free,' the post concluded.
Committee chairman Ofir Katz, a Likud member of the Knesset, said at the start of the hearing that 'Odeh has not apologized or retracted his statements, he's only doubled down, equating hostages with terrorists and making serious accusations against IDF soldiers.'
The hearing unfolded in a tense atmosphere, with two Knesset members reportedly ejected after clashing with other committee members while defending Odeh, according to Israeli outlet Haaretz.
Outside the Knesset, Arab and Jewish Israelis gathered in a protest in support of Odeh, calling for the expulsion process to be halted.
The final decision now moves to the Knesset floor, where a two-thirds majority — 90 out of 120 lawmakers — is required to remove a sitting member. Odeh would retain the right to appeal the decision in court.
Despite repeated attacks by coalition lawmakers, including accusations of being a 'terrorist' who 'would face a firing squad' elsewhere, Odeh has appealed to the opposition to block the motion and prevent what he calls an erosion of democratic norms.
Knesset members Ahmad Tibi (Hadash-Ta'al) and Walid Taha (United Arab List), both members of the Joint List, called the move 'political persecution' and a dangerous precedent.
'Instead of defending freedom of expression, most opposition factions are aligning with the extremist coalition to silence Arab elected officials.'

British FM in Turkey to discuss Middle East, bolster trade ties

Britain's top diplomat David Lammy held top-level talks in Ankara Monday that touched on developments in the Middle East and stronger bilateral trade ties on his first visit to Turkey. It was the first official visit by the British foreign secretary who took office a year ago, and held talks with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Speaking after the talks, Fidan said the pair discussed the 12-day Iran-Israel war that ended nearly a week ago, and the importance of shoring up the ceasefire. 'One of our biggest current strategic goals is for the agreement reached between Iran and Israel to continue, for the ceasefire not to be violated and for a permanent peace to return,' he said. He also thanked Lammy for Britain's move to lift sanctions on Syria in late April and noted that Lammy 'said he would go to Syria soon.' 'This is truly an important area of cooperation for us. Stability and security in Syria is an issue that will serve both the region and all of us globally. We will continue to work together on this issue.' Turkish officials did not say what Lammy discussed in talks with Erdogan. The visit came as the two side sought to 'strengthen our bilateral relationship with a free trade agreement ... (that) will be building on £28 billion worth of trade,' Lammy said after meeting Fidan. The talks also focused on deepening defense ties and joint work on regional security, Lammy's office said. 'Security and defense collaboration with Turkey is imperative to UK security interests. This includes joint work on the prospective export of Eurofighter Typhoon to Turkey,' it said, without giving further details. Turkey has been pushing to modernize its air force by purchasing 40 Eurofighter Typhoons which are built by a four-nation consortium grouping Germany, Britain, Spain and Italy. Although London is leading the talks, any of the four nations can veto a sale with Berlin initially slow to approve the sale due to differences over Turkey's stance on the Gaza war.

Iran-linked hackers may target US firms and critical infrastructure, US warns

Iranian-affiliated hackers may target US companies and critical infrastructure operators, particularly defense organizations with holdings or relationships with Israeli research and defense firms, according to an advisory from US government officials Monday. The FBI, National Security Agency, the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center (DC3) and the Department of Homeland Security's civilian cybersecurity defense wing said in a statement issued alongside the advisory that while there are no indications of a coordinated Iranian-linked malicious cyber campaign so far, organizations should ensure their defenses are up to date. 'Despite a declared ceasefire and ongoing negotiations towards a permanent solution, Iranian-affiliated cyber actors and hacktivist groups may still conduct malicious cyber activity,' the agencies said in the advisory. Cybersecurity researchers and defenders in Israel and the US have so far seen little Iranian-linked cyber activity of consequence in the wake of the war launched by Israel June 13, followed by US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities June 22. Iranian state-sponsored hackers are known to exploit existing vulnerabilities in unpatched or outdated software and compromise internet-connected accounts and devices that use default or weak passwords, as well as work with ransomware operators to encrypt, steal and leak sensitive information, the agencies said Monday. In November 2023, hackers said by the US government to be affiliated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) hacked equipment located in water and wastewater treatment systems in multiple states. The attacks targeted an Israeli-made device and came shortly after the October 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel.
