Mac has relaunched its studio fix powders, and they're so much better

Independent16-04-2025

More than 30 years since its launch, Mac's studio fix powder (£34, Maccosmetics.co.uk) has had a makeover. There were 53 shades in its original iteration, but now there are an additional 25 to suit every complexion.
If you've never used Mac's studio fix powder, it's a two-in-one pressed powder and foundation. It's non-cakey, a godsend for oily skin and has been used on models for shoots and catwalks.
Now, the well-loved formula is catering to deeper skin tones after axing its talc component and, with it, any unwanted ashiness. If that wasn't enough, Mac claims it has doubled the shine control in studio fix 2.0, promising to offer 24 hours (compared with the OG's 12 hours) of blurred, oil-free coverage. Alongside updated ingredients, there's a refillable option, using 45 per cent less packaging.
The question is, how does it hold up in practice? We got our hands on the new launch before its market release – scroll on for our full review and verdict across different skin types.
How we tested
With a broader shade range and modified formula, it seemed only right to test the product across several skin tones and types. We applied the powder to bare skin, documenting its finish and feel before continuing with our day-to-day make-up as usual. We paid attention to how the product wore as the hours passed and noted any caking, feelings of heaviness or excess shine. Keep scrolling to find out how we got on.
Why you can trust IndyBest reviews
For this review, our three testers were IndyBest beauty writer Lucy Smith, who has tested everything from Korean powder foundation to waterproof setting powders; beauty writer Jane Cunningham, who has reviewed complexion products for a range of publications; and beauty creator Nicole Ocran, who is hugely familiar with a wide range of make-up products, spanning brands from Fenty to Charlotte Tilbury and, of course, Mac.

Netflix's Adolescence is now second biggest English-language show on streaming platform

Netflix's Adolescence has hit a huge new milestone, surpassing Stranger Things, as the second most watched English-language TV series, but which show holds the top spot? Netflix's Adolescence has officially became the streamer's second most-watched English-language TV series, surpassing Stranger Things, which previously held the crime drama mini-series, co-created and starring Stephen Graham, arrived on the streaming platform on March 13 and recently reached a huge milestone of 141.2M total views, putting it above the fourth season of Stranger Things, which initially held the title at 140.7M views. It follows the dramatic aftermath of a 13-year-old boy Jamie, portrayed by Owen Cooper, who is arrested for murdering a classmate. Each episode is remarkably shot in one take. In first place is the debut season of the platform's Addams Family spin-off, Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega, which racked in a jaw dropping 252.1M total views within its first 91 days. ‌ In comparison, season one of the streamer's popular Korean psychological thriller Squid Game is Netflix's most watched non-English language TV series, bringing in a whopping 265.2M views in its first three months. Adolescence, which is likely to land several Emmy nominations next month, recently swept at the 2025 Gotham TV Awards. ‌ It was awarded the prize for Breakthrough Limited Series, as well as two acting awards for Graham and young newcomer Owen Cooper for Outstanding Lead Performance in a Limited Series and Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Limited Series, respectively. In his acceptance speech, Graham said: 'We're overwhelmed for you to embrace us the way you have. "This was a small colloquial piece that was made with love, respect, humility and dignity, and we treated the subject with a lot of passion, but a lot of care.' Speaking to The Independent in March about the struggles of shooting each episode in one go, director Philip Barantini admitted: 'It was quite difficult, but it was fun as well. It was meticulously planned. '[Tech rehearsals] would be an opportunity for the sound team to put the booms where they needed to be. ‌ "And, we had all the support and the runners and ADs all dressed in police uniforms in the first episode and teachers in the second episode so they could be on camera and cueing things. 'It was technically challenging, but a huge collaboration.' ‌ It comes after 15-year-old Owen from Cheshire in England recently appeared on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and boldly revealed "one thing he hates about America". Host Jimmy had asked the teenager what he didn't like about America as Owen spent some time there promoting the Netflix drama which is now in talks for a second series. The young actor replied: "One thing I hate about America - the chocolate and the sweets, everything is just terrible. It's just Cheetos and all that nonsense. Honestly, I hate it." ‌ Whilst slating US confectionery, he even brought out some classic British snacks to prove his point that they are better. Owen lifted up a basket of snacks to reveal his favourite treats to Jimmy, which included the classic Maltesers. He asked the host: "Have you ever had a Malteser? Right - I'll bring the whole basket up. So this is what I brought [Monster Munch, Maltesers and Fruit Pastilles]"

Beyonce's Tottenham stadium bag policy and umbrella ban amidst rain forecast

Beyoncé is taking to the stage at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium tonight, and despite there being rain forecasted, umbrellas are completely banned Beyoncé's upcoming performances at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium have been hit with some serious rules. The Grammy Award-winning musician will perform six shows at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – her first UK shows since her Renaissance World Tour in 2023. But ahead of her first show tonight, Beyoncé will go on to perform on June 7, 10, 12, 14, and 16, following a string of dates across America, where she had performed tracks from her eighth studio album. But just hours before the stadium opens its gates for 62,000 fans, hundreds of tickets are still available to purchase on Ticketmaster. ‌ Beyoncé lovers can get their hands on tickets for a seat with a restricted view for just £71, while on Viagogo, members of the BeyHive can pay £54 to secure their place inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this evening. Fans with a little more cash to splash on last-minute purchases can get themselves a South GA Standing Ticket for £224.85 or £278 for seated in decent areas. ‌ Are you heading to see Beyoncé at Tottenham Hotspur? Let us know your thoughts in the comments by clicking here. But just two years ago, Beyoncé sold out every single ticket for her five dates at the same venue. But ahead of the gates opening, bosses at the stadium have released some vital information, including banned items. Most importantly, the stadium will open at 5pm across the string of dates. But if you're hoping to have a drink throughout the night, you need to know that the bar closes at 10.30pm – one hour before the stadium closes. However, it's the bag policy that everybody should be aware of. Personal bags must be A4 or smaller (21cm x 30cm high). Those in attendance are able to use a clear carrier bag (maximum size 30cm long and 30cm high). You mustn't put any personal bags that do not meet the regulated sizes inside those bags, though. ‌ Elsewhere, prohibited items, including liquids, bottles, or high-visibility clothing, will not be permitted at the stadium. But despite a fair amount of rain being forecasted over the next couple of days, don't take an umbrella. Bosses have stated that no umbrellas, regardless of size, will be permitted entry into the stadium. They add that while the weather can be unpredictable, fans should dress appropriately for all weathers to ensure comfort. Throughout the stadium, there are 60 food and drink outlets available, including a Korean-inspired eatery, oven-cooked pizzas and a vegan eatery. The stadium offers a strict Challenge 25 policy, so ID will be required. If you're looking to get your hands on merchandise, you will be pleased to know that the merch is open for a long time. On June 5, 7, 10, 12, 14 and 16, the merchandise will be available to purchase between 12pm and 11.30pm at the Tottenham experience. On June 6, 8, 9, 11 and 13, it'll be open between 9.30am and 5.30pm. Meanwhile, on June 15, it'll open between 11am and 5pm. There is a strict no re-admission policy – once your ticket has been scanned, you won't be able to re-enter if you choose to leave. However, the turnstiles at the South Stand area will allow fans to enter Park Lane Square, where you can find more food and drink outlets.
