Electrical damage forces temporary closure of Byron outdoor pool, recreation programs
Byron's outdoor pool and recreational programs at the site will be closed starting Thursday as a result of electrical damage from this week's severe weather, city officials say. The pool's pumping system was damaged and is undergoing repairs, causing all activities to be cancelled for the coming week heading into July. "We know how much the community was looking forward to using the pool this weekend, and we will be working on resolving this issue as quickly as possible," said Jon-Paul McGonigle, the city's director of recreation and sport in a news release. City officials will contact anyone who is registered for programs at the Byron location to find alternatives or arrange a refund. The city will continue to provide information about when the pool will reopen, it said in the release. All other outdoor and wading pools operated by the city will be open seven days a week throughout the summer, starting on Saturday. Information on current programs, hours and schedules can be found online.

Colleen Bready's Forecast: Warm summer day, but showers possible
Colleen Bready has your current conditions and updated weather forecast for June 26, 2025. It is a warm late June day in Winnipeg and southern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario on Thursday. Most regions, including Winnipeg and Brandon, can expect a mix of sun and cloud, moderate south winds, and afternoon highs in the mid-20s. A low pressure disturbance crossing northern regions, including wildfire areas, will likely bring showers in the afternoon and tonight. However, thunderstorms are also possible, which could produce unwelcome lightning strikes. Much like the south, daytime highs across most of the north will reach the mid-20s in most areas on Thursday, including as far north as Churchill. An air quality alert remains in effect Thursday for the Lynn Lake region, related to wildfire smoke concerns. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), strengthening south winds moving in behind a departing ridge of high pressure could send smoke north and into the town. Back in Winnipeg, football fans can look forward to pleasant conditions for the Bomber game Thursday evening at Princess Auto Stadium. Temperature will be in the low 20s with a clearing sky. South winds will be around 20 km/h. Meanwhile, it could be a very different story for the southwest. ECCC said potentially severe storms could move into the region late Thursday evening from Saskatchewan, with more severe weather expected in parts of the southwest on Friday.

Fête nationale marked Montreal's hottest June day ever, breaking 61-year-old record
Tuesday's Fête nationale holiday was the hottest June day in Montreal since records started. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says temperatures hit 35.6 C, breaking the all-time high for June set 61 years ago. The previous monthly high of 35 C was set on June 30, 1964, recorded at Montreal's Trudeau Airport, where records have been kept since 1942. As Montreal sweltered, heat and humidity also enveloped much of Ontario and the eastern half of the United States, where major cities like New York City, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Boston all recorded temperatures above 38 C. The U.S. National Weather Service expected dozens of places to tie or set new daily temperature records on Tuesday.
