Tesla Might Have a Fix for the Elon Musk Problem

Tesla Might Have a Fix for the Elon Musk Problem

Gizmodo5 hours ago

Tesla is having a nightmarish year, and much of the damage can be traced directly to its CEO, Elon Musk.
After spending nearly $290 million to help Donald Trump return to the White House, Musk took on a tailor-made role in the administration, heading the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). His push to slash federal agencies and cut social programs, combined with his embrace of controversial theories, sparked global protests outside Tesla showrooms. The company's liberal customer base, once its greatest asset, felt alienated, with many owners publicly regretting their purchases.
The backlash has been brutal. In the first quarter, Tesla's global sales fell 13%, and its net income plummeted a staggering 71% to $409 million compared to the previous year. The company's stock is down over 20% since January. With early data suggesting the slide isn't stopping, the reputational damage looks deep and lasting, even after Musk's spectacular falling out with the president and departure from the administration.
But Tesla may have an escape plan. According to a new report from Bloomberg, the automaker is turning its sights to India.
The company is preparing to open its first showroom in Mumbai by mid-July, with another planned for New Delhi shortly after. A first shipment of Chinese-made vehicles, primarily the best-selling Model Y SUV, has already been sent to the country. This move isn't just about expansion; it's a strategic pivot toward the third-largest auto market in the world, a market that could potentially offset cratering demand in Europe and stiffening competition from Chinese rival BYD.
For years, Tesla's attempts to enter India have failed, snagged by disagreements over local manufacturing requirements and pricing. The breakthrough appears to have come in February, after Musk met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his state visit to Washington. The two leaders spoke again by phone in April.
'Spoke to @elonmusk and talked about various issues,' Modi posted on X. 'We discussed the immense potential for collaboration in the areas of technology and innovation.'
Spoke to @elonmusk and talked about various issues, including the topics we covered during our meeting in Washington DC earlier this year. We discussed the immense potential for collaboration in the areas of technology and innovation. India remains committed to advancing our…
— Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) April 18, 2025Musk responded enthusiastically, saying, 'I am looking forward to visiting India later this year!'
It was an honor to speak with PM Modi.
I am looking forward to visiting India later this year! https://t.co/TYUp6w5Gys
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 19, 2025For a company desperately needing to change the narrative, this pivot to a massive, untapped market could be the lifeline it needs. The question is whether a new chapter in India can be enough to fix the damage done at home.
Tesla did not immediately respond to Gizmodo's request for comment.

Podcast Bro Theo Von Questions How 'America First' Trump Really Is Amid Potential Iran War

Popular podcast host Theo Von joined Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna (Calif.) Friday in taking a hard stance against potential U.S. involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict. Khanna appeared on Von's podcast 'This Past Weekend' to discuss several topics, from foreign affairs to AI. At one point in the segment, Khanna promoted the War Powers Resolution, a bipartisan bill he introduced with Republican Rep. Thomas Massie (Ky.) aimed at prohibiting U.S. armed forces from unauthorized hostilities in Iran. During his discussion with Von, Khanna noted several people in MAGA's base who have been vocal about the U.S. not going to war with Iran, including Tucker Carlson and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.). Von agreed with the two conservatives, stating, 'this is a horrible idea.' 'Yeah, people say, 'Well, you don't know a ton about the Middle East.' Like, that's fine. I don't want people I know, my friends, getting called up. I don't want the children of my friends getting called over to die,' Von said. 'I don't even understand how it's an option.' Von, who had Donald Trump on his podcast last year, helped the president reach younger male voters during the 2024 presidential election. Khanna remarked on the influence of Von's interview with Trump, stating the podcaster made the president 'the most human that I've actually seen him,' after the two opened up about the president's brother, alcoholism and cocaine. Last month, Von performed a controversial comedy act at a military base in Qatar before Trump addressed U.S. and Qatari troops. The podcast host has seemingly gotten closer to the Trump family, even having dinner with Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, after they attended his comedy show in Miami. Miami looked good on you @TheoVon ! Come back and visit us soon !😎 — Ivanka Trump (@IvankaTrump) May 14, 2025 Now, however, Von is beginning to question the 'America First' claims that Trump made during his campaign. When Khanna asked Von if he knew anyone who was supporting the idea of the U.S. going to war with Iran, Von responded, 'Nobody.' I asked @TheoVon if he knows anyone who says we should go to war with Nobody. I feel like it was supposed to be America first. — Ro Khanna (@RoKhanna) June 20, 2025 Von went on to tell Khanna that 'it feels like we are just working for Israel,' and that he believes a lot of Americans are beginning to feel 'disillusioned' by U.S. leaders. 'I felt like it was supposed to be America first, like, we're focusing on, like, 'What are we doing to get things back into America,' right? To like, increase like the purpose of being an American, to refill our hearts with blood and ... make us feel something again here, and make us be excited about being an American,' Von said. Elon Musk says xAI will retrain Grok: 'Far too much garbage'

When you're Elon Musk, you don't have to rely on centuries of prevailing human understanding — you can create your own. "We will use Grok 3.5 (maybe we should call it 4), which has advanced reasoning, to rewrite the entire corpus of human knowledge, adding missing information and deleting errors," Musk wrote on X on Friday night. Then, he said he would retrain Grok's latest model on that new base of knowledge to be free of proverbial waste. "Far too much garbage in any foundation model trained on uncorrected data," he added. Musk has for years endeavored to create products, like the rebranded Twitter and Grok, that are free from what he views as harmful mainstream constraints. Business Insider previously reported that Grok's army of "AI tutors" was training the bot on a host of dicey topics to compete with OpenAI's more "woke" ChatGPT. Musk on Saturday asked X users to respond to his post with examples of "divisive facts" that can be used in Grok's retraining. Gary Marcus, an AI hype critic and professor emeritus at New York University, compared Musk's effort to an Orwellian dystopia, which isn't the first time he's made the comparison. "Straight out of 1984. You couldn't get Grok to align with your own personal beliefs, so you are going to rewrite history to make it conform to your views," he wrote on X in response to Musk. A revamped Grok could have real-world impacts. In May, just as Musk was stepping back from his work in Washington, DC to refocus on his various companies, Reuters reported that DOGE was planning to expand its use of Grok to analyze government data. "They ask questions, get it to prepare reports, give data analysis," a source told Reuters, referring to how the bot was being used. Two other sources told the outlet that officials in the Department of Homeland Security had been encouraged to use it despite the fact that it hadn't been approved. A representative for the department told the New Republic that "DOGE hasn't pushed any employees to use any particular tools or products." Grok has also had security issues. In May, after what the company said was an "unauthorized modification" to its backend, the bot started to frequently refer to "white genocide" in South Africa. The company quickly resolved the issue and said it had conducted a "thorough investigation" and was "implementing measures to enhance Grok's transparency and reliability."
