Tripura man who raped wife's minor student gets 20-year rigorous imprisonment
A local court in Tripura on Thursday convicted a 44-year-old man for raping a minor schoolgirl several times and sentenced him to 20 years' rigorous imprisonment, Special Public Prosecutor Sunirmal Deb said. The girl's private teacher's husband repeatedly raped her when she visited the teacher for private tuition in Unakoti district in 2023, Special Public Prosecutor Sunirmal Deb and counsel Sandip Debroy said, addng that the sexual assaults happened in the absence of the teacher or when she was in her prayer room. They added that the sexual assaults came to light after the minor girl refused to go to the private teacher's home after July 5, 2023. After learning about the sexual assaults, the schoolgirl's parents filed a police complaint against the teacher's husband on July 8 that year. 'The investigating officer filed the chargesheet by July 31, 2023, following a speedy investigation. Twelve witnesses got their statements recorded. After the trial, a special judge convicted the man and sentenced him to 20 years' rigorous imprisonment and ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 11,000, failing which he will have to spend additional four months in jail,' Special Public Prosecutor Sunirmal Deb told reporters.

Clothing designer duped of Rs 55 lakh by ‘cruise ship officer' who proposed to marry her
A Pune-based clothing designer was duped of Rs 55 lakh by a cyber criminal who posed as a cruise ship officer of Italian descent and promised to marry her. An FIR was registered at the cybercrime police station by a clothing designer, who is in her early 40s, and runs her own designing firm in Pune. In March this year, the complainant got a friend request on Instagram from a person, who claimed to be an officer with a cruise liner company. Over the next few days, the user sent several photos of him in uniform on a cruise ship and even told her that his mother lives in India to gain the complainant's trust . The two started communicating on a daily basis. During a routine phone call, the fraudster, the complainant, and an elderly woman—claiming to be the 'cruise officer's mother'—participated in a conference call, further gaining the complainant's trust. Subsequently, the fraudster proposed to the victim, who agreed to marry him. He promised her that he would come to India in December later this year when talks about the marriage would be held in presence of his mother. Some time later, to further gain her trust, the fraudster shared a bank account number, login password and other details with the complainant and asked her to make a payment for a shipment of machinery he had ordered. The fraudster later told her that he had ordered another shipment of machinery worth Rs 4 crores. He again asked her to make a payment, but it did not succeed. The fraudster then told that his boss was in India and the complainant could make the payment of Rs 55 lakh as the initial payment for the shipment. The fraudster promised that he would return the money as soon as possible. The complainant was manipulated into making nine transfers totalling Rs 55 lakh to mule accounts in banks at Chengalpattu in Tamil Nadu, Vikaspuri, Janakpuri and Azadpur in Delhi, Idukki and Malappuram in Kerala, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai. Later, the fraudster sent a document to the complainant saying it was related to emergency leave he was applying for at his cruise liner company. After initial reading of the form, the complainant suspected it to be fake. She mailed the cruise liner company the fraudster had claimed to be an employee of and realised she had been cheated. She subsequently approached the cyber crime police station and lodged an FIR. A probe has been launched in the case. The Indian Express has reported earlier that carefully fabricated social media profiles were being used by cyber frauds to exploit the emotional and financial vulnerabilities of the victims in social engineering scams.

Doctor accused in murder case caught ‘spreading rice' in Delhi court, claims it was an accident — judge isn't convinced
Around 11 am on Monday, a doctor accused in a 14-year-old murder case walked into the courtroom of Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Shefali Barnala Tandon of Tis Hazari Court. Proceedings were underway, before the court staff noticed something fishy and told the judge — the accused, Dr Chander Vibhas, had thrown some rice on the floor under the dais. The court staff told the judge that this wasn't an isolated incident and that on August 2, too, some grains of rice were found on the floor of the court. The accused told the judge he had appeared via video conferencing on August 2. The court reader immediately opened the order sheet and caught his lie — he was, in fact, present in court. The counsel in the room were reportedly 'spooked', suspecting 'black magic', and requested the court to get the rice cleaned up. For close to 15 minutes, court proceedings were halted. It resumed after the floor was cleaned. In her order dated August 11, ASJ Tandon said, 'This is very shocking and surprising to the court that the present accused, Dr Chander Vibhas, who is stated to be a surgeon by profession and belonging to the educated and elite class, has acted in such an unreasonable manner and created an interruption in court proceedings.' The court also took cognizance of the offence under Section 267 of the BNS (intentional insult or interruption to a public servant sitting in judicial proceeding) against the accused. 'Disrespect towards the court or disruption of judicial proceedings sends a damaging public message and such overt act/behaviour of the accused today not only disrupted court proceedings and undermined the judicial process, but also threatens the very foundation of our legal system,' the judge added. Following this, the accused knelt before the court to apologise. Judge Tandon said she would wait for his counsel before passing the final order. In the afternoon, advocate Sonam Gupta, who represented the accused, appeared before the court. She said the accused was feeling remorse and such an act wouldn't be repeated in the future. The doctor had been 'misguided' by someone, she submitted. 'After considering all the facts and circumstances, including the apology tendered by the accused and his feeling of remorse, he is sentenced to undergo imprisonment till rising of the Court and fine of Rs 2,000 to be deposited with the State,' the Judge said in her order.
