Whitchurch businesses welcome Shropshire's first banking hub

BBC News28-03-2025

Businesses have praised a banking hub, describing the service as "excellent" after the last bank in town said it would close its doors. The new hub in Whitchurch, the first of its kind in Shropshire, allows customers to take out cash, make deposits and check balances without having to travel to other areas. It was set up by CashAccess, a non-profit organisation owned and run by major banks, aiming to make sure people can still get cash when they need it. The last regular bank standing in Whitchurch - TSB - announced it would shut in May.
Kenny Bould who works at Timpsons, over the road from the hub's base, said: "I use it to put money in, and also we need change, and every time I've been in there's no queue - [I go] in and out, it's brilliant." Mr Bould said the provision would "help me loads" and was a "brilliant idea".
So far, the hub has representatives from TSB, Halifax, Barclays, and NatWest coming in one day per week. It offers private spaces to talk through financial concerns with experts.TSB announced last year it would be closing its Whitchurch branch, saying it was because the majority of their customers were using digital rather than face-to-face services.According to figures from TSB, 96% of transactions take place outside of branches, with those carried out in-branch falling by 43% since 2020.
Some locals are worried that losing the town's last bank could lead to a drop in footfall on the high street, but hope the hub can make a difference."A lot of people won't come to the town any longer to do their banking, and so won't look round the shops" said Sharron Marriott, who runs Make Your House A Home. She said she hoped the hub would change that.
Florist Jenny McHale from Gallery Flowers said the banking hub was "removing the pressure" from the local Post Office, where locals had previously been taking out cash. "When you're in the Post Office you're in a queue for 25, 30 minutes, maybe longer," she said.Ms McHale added that aside from the new hub, her closest bank branch was a 45-minute drive away in Chester.
For businesses that rely on cash, having somewhere to deposit - and withdraw - money is essential.Barbara Bailey from Antiques Emporium says the business can miss out from a lack of banking provision, as it doesn't accept card payments at all. "We find that [customers] can't walk anywhere to get [cash] - they say 'we'll come back' and then they don't come back," she said.
The importance of cash was echoed by Mark Fulton, who runs record store The Vinyl Countdown."As a business owner it's obviously essential that we have somewhere we can pay cash in and take cash out," he explained. And that while "the ideal scenario" would be having full-time bank branches back in the town, he said, the shared hub was "a good second choice".

Martin Lewis MSE names 5 major banks offering Brits free £175 bonus

Martin Lewis' MSE website has revealed how cash-strapped Brits can earn up to £200 for simply opening a new bank account, as five major lenders continue to offer lucrative incentives Brits are being urged to make the most of lucrative bank bonuses worth up to £200 - and they aren't just for new customers. If you're still feeling the financial wrath of 'Awful April', which saw a slew of household bills spiral, moving banks could help alleviate some of the pressure. It might sound too good to be true, but many high-street lenders actually offer huge incentives for new (and sometimes even existing) customers to lure them in. ‌ Often, this includes free cash bonuses, often referred to as legal bank 'bribes', or perks such as access to cashback deals, 0 per cent overdrafts, and high interest rate savings accounts. However, there will always be a slew of criteria customers need to meet in order to be eligible for the rewards. ‌ READ MORE: Tesco introduces huge Clubcard perk in car parks but there's a catch Martin Lewis ' MSE website states there are currently five banks offering switch bonuses this month, with one particular lender offering a hefty £200 free bonus. "Switching's usually quick and easy," MSE states. "In Martin's recent social media poll, 90 per cent of the 5,500 who'd switched said it was easy and hassle-free." First Direct - free £175 As previously reported, First Direct is currently offering newbies £175 if they open up an account using the Current Account Switch Service. Within 45 days of opening the account, you'll need to transfer at least two Direct Debits or standing orders, deposit £1,000, make five or more debit card payments, and log on to digital banking. First Direct is also offering a £250 interest-free overdraft (subject to status) and access to its 7.00 per cent AER/gross Regular Saver account. However, this offer is only available to new customers - and excludes those who have previously held a First Direct product or those who have opened an HSBC current account on or after January 1, 2018. Co-op Bank - free £100 The Co-operative Bank is still offering £100 for new customers, as long you deposit £1,000, have two or more Direct Debits, you register for online/mobile banking, and make at least 10 debit card transactions within the first 30 days of switching. Co-op warns that deposits or transactions made prior to the switch completion will not count towards the £100 criteria. You can also get £25 for three months (worth £75) by continuing to actively use your current account. This requires customers to deposit £1,000 or more, make ten or more card or digital wallet transactions, and have two active Direct Debits. If you do not meet the eligibility criteria for one of the months, you can still meet it in one of the following months. ‌ TSB - free £100 TSB is another bank offering newbies a £100 welcome bonus for completing a full switch to their Spend and Save account. You'll need to log into the TSB Mobile Banking App and make at least five payments on your debit card before July 19, 2025, to earn the bonus (which will be paid between August 2-16, 2025). Customers can also earn £15 cashback each month for up to six months, which is worth a whopping £90. To qualify for this separate bonus, you'll need to make 20 or more debit card payments in a calendar month (pending payments don't count) and the cashback will be paid into your account the next calendar month. Similar to the other banks, you'll need to have at least two Direct Debits and pay in £1,500 within 60 days of submitting your initial switch request. The generous offer isn't available for anyone who has held a current account with Santander on January 1, 2025, or if you've previously made use of a Santander switcher incentive. However, there is a big catch with this account, as you will have to pay in £3 per month to maintain it, and need to pay in £500 into your account each month. Still, with one per cent cashback on energy bills, council tax, broadband, TV, mobile and water bills (maxed at £10 per month) it could still be worth paying for the account. ‌ According to MSE, Santander is also offering one per cent cashback on supermarket, fuel and train spending. This is capped at £10 per month and is only valid until September 9, 2025. Nationwide - free £200 Arguably saving the best until last, Nationwide is offering a whopping £200 for those opening a Nationwide FlexDirect account. However, this freebie is only for those who already have a Nationwide personal savings account (including cash ISAs) or residential mortgage who are switching a different current account from another bank. You'll need to be a qualifying member as of March 31, 2025, have at least two Direct Debits, pay in at least £1,000 and make one debit card payment within the first 31 days of opening the account. *This article does not constitute financial advice. Brits reveal most expensive holiday mistakes from £30 Coca-Cola to £80 t-shirts

Take the quiz to see if you are an 'international money master' HOLIDAMAKERS have revealed some of the most expensive things they've bought by accident - in another country. A poll of 2,000 travellers found one had mistakenly stumped up £30 for a single glass of Coca-Cola in Rome, while another bought a t-shirt for £80 that they thought was £10. Advertisement Try out the clever Post Office quiz Three in 10 felt they have often paid more for something on holiday because they were a tourist. Other shocking expenses accidentally incurred by respondents included a single shot of whiskey ending up at £48. While someone else forked out £25 for a taxi ride in Amsterdam – only to find themselves arriving at their destination after less than a mile. The research, carried out by Post Office, showed travellers often suffer with currency confusion, as a fifth (21 per cent) admitted to getting confused about how much money is worth 'in pounds' when they go away. Advertisement Which leads to a quarter (26 per cent) paying more than expected for something. Six in 10 correctly knew £5 sterling would get them between $6-$7 in the US, the remaining 40 per cent were clueless, with a quarter (24 per cent) of them guessing they'd get less than $6. Probably the most common conversion for Brits – euros – also confused respondents, with almost a third (32 per cent) not knowing what £5 would get them. Instead of the correct answer of €5-€6, 17 per cent thought it would be less than €5 and 13 per cent thought it would be as high as €8. Advertisement With nearly four in 10 (39 per cent) attempting to work out local currency rates in their own heads, it's no wonder things can go wrong. While just over one in 20 (six per cent) will ask somebody nearby and then take their word for it, according to the figures. Laura Plunkett, head of travel money at Post Office, which commissioned the research to raise awareness of its Travel Money Card said: 'Our research reveals many travellers overestimate their ability to mentally convert currencies on the go, and that can lead to overspending. "We wanted to highlight how easily confusion around exchange rates can impact holiday budgets - no one wants to waste time abroad worrying about money. Advertisement "It's surprising that only 19 per cent of travellers use a prepaid travel card for their spending abroad when it can allow travellers to lock in a good rate before travelling." The study found respondents are taking measures to stop them accidentally spending a fortune on holiday keepsakes – with 17 per cent relying on currency conversion apps. And when it comes to money safety, they are taking measures to keep their money more secure while travelling – with 49 per cent using a separate card which is not linked to their main bank account for spending abroad – keeping their 'main funds' safe from fraudsters or thieves. Laura Plunkett for Post Office, which has a Travel App which allows holidaymakers to check exchange rates and track spending in real time, added: 'Nothing disrupts a holiday like a financial mishap. Keeping your travel money separate from your main account is a smart move to give you greater control, clearer visibility of what you're spending, and an extra layer of protection – and something 96 per cent of respondents agreed was important. Advertisement 'Whether you're budgeting carefully or just want to avoid mixing travel purchases with everyday costs, this small step can make a big difference to your trip.'
