City of Newport Business Club Announces Entertainment-Filled Summer Social
Welsh stand-up Steffan Evans and Close-up magician Jose Fortuna
Newport businesses can look forward to an evening of mirth, magic and music as a city networking club stages its latest Summer Social event.
The City of Newport Business Club will be hosting its fourth annual Summer Social at the NP20 Bar & Kitchen at the Mercure Newport in the city centre on Thursday, July 10.
The club hosts four traditional networking events with guest speakers every year, with the Summer Social being a more relaxed fifth event that offers entertainment and food and drink to its members.
This year's event features comedy from Welsh stand-up Steffan Evans. Since bursting on to the comedy circuit, Steffan has become one of its fast-rising stars. He has supported the likes of Elis James on tour, compered festival shows featuring comics like James Acaster, and toured his own shows across the UK.
Close-up magician Jose Fortuna will be milling among guests on the night. Jose has performed across Europe and the US over the last 15 years.
Music on the night will be provided by Chris John, a singer and guitarist who is well known across South Wales venues and is a regular performer at the club's Summer Socials.
The evening will also include a buffet and a pay bar. Singer Chris John
City of Newport Business Club chairman Professor Jonathan Deacon said:
'Our Summer Social has become a fixture on the calendar of many businesses across Newport and the wider area for good reason.
'It gives our guests a chance to relax in an informal atmosphere, enjoy some great entertainment, food and drink and – of course – to network with fellow businesses.
'We look forward to seeing everyone on July 10.'
The City of Newport Business Club event starts at 5pm. Tickets for the event, which includes a buffet meal, are priced at £27.50 and can be booked via the link here .
Information about how to become a member or sponsor of the City of Newport Business Club are also available on the club's website .

Portskewett bungalow refused on road safety grounds
Craig Senior was refused planning permission for the bungalow which would have been built on land at the back of number 65 Main Road, Portskewett. He appealed to Welsh planning body Planning and Environment Decisions Wales which sent independent inspector Anthony Thickett to view the narrow track that was proposed as an access from Main Road to the bungalow. He concluded Monmouthshire County Council was right to refuse planning permission and wrote in his report: 'I note the site is within walking distance of a number of facilities but the proposed development would inevitably lead to an increase in the use of an access which is substandard with regards to its width and visibility to Main Road. 'For these reasons, I conclude that the proposed development would have an adverse impact on highway safety.' Mr Thickett said the track already serves nine properties, including number 65, and a field though four properties have drives on to main road and he thought a further off street parking space has been created but said: 'From my observations, the occupiers of at least five properties (not counting No. 65) actively use the track to access garages and parking spaces to the rear of the houses.' He described its visibility at the access to Main Road as 'poor in both directions' with a wall and telegraph pole to the east and a wall to the west while a line of parked cars either side of the track 'limited visibility even further'. READ MORE: Extension for Portskewett shop approved by councillors As the track isn't wide enough for vehicles to enter and exit at the same time Mr Thickett said drivers waiting to turn in would restrict the 'free flow' of traffic on Main Road and stated: 'Drivers approaching the track would have little warning of vehicles exiting the track and vice versa.' He also said vehicles turning left, from the track, to pass a vehicle waiting to enter the track, would have to cross on to the wrong side of the road, due to the line of parked cars. Mr Thickett also said he didn't believe widening the track to provide a footway would overcome the poor visibility to Main Road.

England star finds happiness after tragedy as he opens up on grief in emotive interview
England star finds happiness after tragedy as he opens up on grief in emotive interview England international Tom Youngs has found happiness again after the painful loss of his wife Tom Youngs shared some tips for grieving in a touching chat with brother Ben. (Image: For The Love Of Rugby ) Former England international Tom Youngs has opened up on his grieving process after losing his wife. Youngs retired with immediate effect to care for wife Tiffany, who was battling cancer. The pair shared a daughter, Maisie. Tiffany passed away in 2022 at the age of 35. She had initially been told she was in remission in 2018 after first being diagnosed in 2014, but the cancer came back. Now, more than three years later, Youngs has opened up on what it's been like for him from a mental standpoint. He appeared as a guest on a recent episode of 'For The Love Of Rugby' podcast, which is presented by his brother and fellow England international Ben Youngs, as well as Dan Cole. Being interviewed by Ben, Tom was asked "how is life now?" after numerous requests from viewers of the show. "Life's good now, actually," began Tom in an emotional but ultimately uplifting interview. Article continues below "I think I've found my feet. I've got Maisie at home. I've got a new girlfriend called Kate, which is fantastic, we're getting on well. "Life, will it ever be the same? Probably not. That's the reality. You've got a scar there but you can make the best out of life, as much as you want to do. "I'm a big believer in, if anyone's been through anything I've been through, do not try and stop life, because you cannot. "Life will just keep going forward. If you do try and stop it you're probably going to get yourself in a bit of trouble. You've got to roll with life. "Whatever it is, you've just got to keep going forward, as best you can and make the best of the situation you've got in some regards. "I'm very much a glass-half-full kind of guy, and I feel like that probably helped me a lot. But, don't try and stop it, because I think you can dig yourself in a deep hole very quickly." "I know that a lot of listeners will be very pleased to hear that," added Ben. "Life being good, that's OK as well," emphasised Tom. "I think I found that quite tricky. "Actually being happy was weird. Should I be happy? Shouldn't I be? But, yes. You should be. I didn't do anything wrong. Tiff didn't do anything wrong. "The situation happened and then we have to move on from that, and that's tough to say. But, that's reality. You've got to be OK that you are happy."
