Catherine Connolly becomes first confirmed Presidential candidate
The race to replace Michael D Higgins has been plagued with people who otherwise would have been prime candidates confirming that they wouldn't be going for the Áras.
Ms Connolly, an independent TD in Galway West who was the previous Les-Cheann Comhairle in the Dáil from 2020 to 2024, was the second favourite to succeed fellow Galwegian in Michael D, but nothing had been confirmed — until she said that she will be officially launching her campaign next week after receiving support from left wing parties. 'Yes, my mind is made up to run,' Deputy Connolly told the Connacht Tribune. 'I've support from across the spectrum, including the Social Democrats, People Before Profit and Solidarity, as well as a number of senators and others.
'Labour and Sinn Féin are still completing their own internal processes which I fully respect. I'll be formally launching my campaign next week.'
There were talks of Deputy Connolly potentially running from a left-party united front, however Sinn Féin and Labour are yet to decide if they will run a candidate.

The current favourite to replace Michael D is former MEP Mairead McGuinness, who is expected to run under the Fine Gael ticket once nominations for the party close next week. She is currently running unopposed after Seán Kelly confirmed on Thursday that he wouldn't be seeking the nomination from the party.
The bookies currently have Ms McGuinness as evens to win the election, set to take place sometime in October, while Ms Connolly's odds were around 4/1 before she confirmed that she'd run.
Mary Lou McDonald appeared to have changed her mind from not wanting to go for it to considering the job earlier this week, and is currently the third favourite to win with odds of 6/1, while former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, who hasn't ruled anything out, was sat at around 9/1 odds. Mary Hanafin also expressed her desire to run under the Fianna Fáil banner, but nothing has been confirmed by the party at the time of writing.

‘Enough is enough' – households being forced to subsidise the costs of data centres, says Sinn Féin MEP
It comes after the Commission for the Regulation of Utilities (CRU) decided to increase the electricity network charges for households, but reduce the charges for large users such as data centres. Dublin MEP Lynn Boylan accused the CRU of making households subsidise the costs of data centres. The Sinn Féin politician said this was 'incredible at a time when bills are crippling so many'. In a draft decision, the regulator is proposing an €18bn investment in the country's electricity system. This will mean network tariffs – part of the charges that make up customer bills – will rise to fund the revamp. Earlier this month, the CRU issued a press release saying the five-year investment plan should add between €6 and €16 to the average annual household bill. However, a deeper dive into the regulatory documents revealed that the investment plan could add €80 to an average annual domestic bill. This is a rise of 21pc in the network charges for households, taking annual network charges for consumers to €454 a year. Extra large energy users could see their network charges fall by between 3pc and 18pc up to 2030, under different scenarios the regulator has modelled. The €18bn investment is needed to pay for strengthening networks to cope with extreme events such as Storm Éowyn and allow for the connection of tens of thousands of new homes and businesses. ADVERTISEMENT Ms Boylan said that under the CRU's draft decision, households and SMEs will see their electricity network charges rise. At the same time, large energy users such as data centres will get reductions of up to 18pc. 'Regulatory documents reveal that grid upgrades are being driven in part by the growing electricity demands of data centres, whose usage has increased 400pc since 2015,' Ms Boylan said. 'In effect, the entities driving the increased need for grid investment are being asked to contribute less, while the general public pays more.' Now data centres are driving up the cost of electricity in a cost-of-living crisis She said this amounts to households being forced to subsidise the costs of data centres. 'The CRU will dress this up as a complicated technical decision, but at the end of the day this is a political choice to side with Big Tech's data centres over households,' she said. She said data centres were making it harder to build houses in a housing crisis, but were also making it harder to keep the lights on in an energy crisis. 'Now data centres are driving up the cost of electricity in a cost-of-living crisis. Enough is enough.' The CRU insisted large energy users will end up paying multiples more than residential electricity users in network charges. Data centres are just one part of the growing electricity demand and the CRU said it continues to introduce measures to manage their impact and ensure a balanced, secure energy supply for all users. It said the decrease in network charges for extra-large energy users is mostly attributed to the decline in costs from recent years associated with temporary increases in the transmission tariffs. These contributed to larger increases in the bills of large energy users over the last five years when compared to smaller customer groups. It said that between 2020 and this year, typical large energy users experienced a 167pc increase in network charges, compared with a 35pc increase for domestic customers.

Question mark over Mary Lou McDonald's potential candidacy as support for Connolly builds
AS OPPOSITION PARTIES on the left have begun to back Independent Catherine Connolly for the Áras, it remains uncertain whether Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald will contest the presidency. Galway West TD Connolly confirmed to the Connacht Tribune on Thursday that she intends to enter the presidential race. The Social Democrats are backing her bid. Today, People Before Profit said that its steering committee has agreed to endorse Connolly. Subject to ratification by a national council of the party's members, TDs Paul Murphy and Richard Boyd Barrett will formally nominate the former Mayor of Galway for the position. Paul Murphy described Connolly as a 'popular principled figure on the left' and said that the party is pleased that she has put herself forward as a candidate. He urged others on the left to join her campaign. He added that having a president on the left would be a powerful political force that would enable the left 'to finally end the rule of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael. It's what so many want.' Sinn Féin's presidential election decision in few weeks
Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has again repeated that the party is considering its options on this year's presidential election and will arrive at a decision in a few weeks. She said a process was under way and there was more work to do. Asked whether she might run, Ms McDonald said "all options are on the table". On possibly supporting Independent TD Catherine Connolly, Ms McDonald said the party had not decided whether to run its own candidate or to back somebody else and she said "good luck to her". Ms Connolly confirmed that she will formally declare her candidacy next week and the campaign was already "taking shape". She was speaking at a Sinn Féin rally in central Dublin billed as a demonstration to "save" the GPO. Ms McDonald said the historic complex should not be given over to retail. Meanwhile People Before Profit's steering committee has agreed to endorse Ms Connolly for President. "Catherine Connolly is a popular, principled figure on the left and we are pleased that she has put herself forward as a candidate. We welcome that the Social Democrats have also given their support to Catherine and we urge others on the left to join her campaign," TD Paul Murphy said. "We believe that an imaginative campaign in support of Catherine, articulating a radical, progressive vision, and with the energetic backing of the parties of the left, can build a powerful momentum to achieve an important victory."
