The deadly crash of Air India flight 171 last month has reignited a long-standing debate in the aviation industry over whether video cameras should be installed in airliner cockpits to monitor pilots' actions—a move that could complement the cockpit voice and flight data recorders already relied on by accident investigators.
Willie Walsh, head of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and a former airline pilot, voiced strong support for cockpit video monitoring during remarks on Wednesday in Singapore. 'Based on what little we know now, it's quite possible that a video recording, in addition to the voice recording, would significantly assist investigators in conducting that investigation on the issue of mental health,' he said.

A preliminary report by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has raised troubling questions about the Air India crash, suggesting one of the pilots might have cut off fuel to the Boeing 787's engines seconds after takeoff, causing an irrecoverable situation. The crash in Ahmedabad claimed 241 of the 242 lives aboard, along with 19 people on the ground.
Advocates for cockpit cameras argue that video evidence can provide critical context missing from audio and data recordings, while opponents warn of privacy intrusions and potential misuse, believing the benefits may not justify the risks.
Recent incidents have demonstrated how valuable video can be. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) cited cockpit video footage as 'invaluable' in solving the 2023 crash of a Robinson R66 helicopter, which broke apart mid-air and killed the pilot—the sole occupant. The video revealed the pilot had been distracted by using a mobile phone and consuming food and beverages. The ATSB praised Robinson Helicopters for installing cameras at the factory and urged other manufacturers and operators to consider similar measures for safety.
Calls for cockpit video are not new. In 2000, following the 1999 EgyptAir Flight 990 crash, where the first officer intentionally downed the Boeing 767 killing all 217 people on board, U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chairman Jim Hall pushed the Federal Aviation Administration to mandate cockpit image recorders.
'In the balance between privacy and safety, the scale tips toward safety, unequivocally,' said air safety expert and former airline pilot John Nance. 'Protecting the flying public is a sacred obligation.'
Anthony Brickhouse, another aviation safety expert, agrees on the value of cockpit video, though he acknowledges pilots' concerns about privacy. 'Video on Air India flight 171 would have answered lots of questions,' he said.

There is no need for Boeing to take immediate action following the AI171 preliminary crash report, and any required modifications can be considered after the full investigation and formal recommendations are issued, said William M Walsh, Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), on Wednesday, while praising the Indian government for releasing a detailed and timely preliminary report. Global airlines body IATA has over 350 carriers, spread across 120 countries, as its members. Walsh, during a media roundtable in Singapore, supported the idea of video recording inside cockpits, noting that such footage could prove immensely helpful to accident investigators. Speaking as a former pilot, he admitted pilot resistance to cockpit video surveillance but said modern cockpit isolation demands reconsideration. 'A video recording in addition to the voice recording would significantly assist the investigators,' he remarked, calling it a strong argument. The AI171 crash investigation has now entered its second phase, as global aviation stakeholders continue to track the case closely. The June 12 disaster claimed 241 lives onboard and 19 on the ground, after the Boeing 787 crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad. The preliminary report released by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on July 12 revealed that both fuel control switches had moved to off seconds after lift-off, but did not explain why. On the topic of pilot mental health, Walsh emphasised that aviation already includes psychological evaluations during pilot selection and regular medical assessments. 'Mental health is a global issue, not unique to pilots,' he said. Referring to the Germanwings tragedy in 2015, he said the industry has since taken additional steps and must continue improving. 'We need to do everything to enhance safety,' he added. He was referring to the 2015 Germanwings Flight 9525 tragedy, where co-pilot Andreas Lubitz deliberately crashed an Airbus A320 into the French Alps, killing all 150 on board — 144 passengers and six crew members. Lubitz had been treated for suicidal tendencies and was declared unfit to fly by his doctor, but the pilot withheld this information from the airline. Walsh strongly backed the Indian authorities for releasing a detailed preliminary report on schedule. 'I commend the Indian government and the AAIB for the release of the preliminary report. It was more detailed than most people were expecting. No formal recommendations have been made to Boeing or GE so far, and I think it has been properly handled,' he said. Asked whether Boeing should proactively modify its aircraft or components in light of the findings, Walsh cautioned against premature conclusions. 'No, I don't think so. I think what we'll do is wait for the final report. I wouldn't speculate on what will happen. It's important to allow the investigators to do a full and proper job,' he said. Walsh's remarks align with the positions taken by regulators in the US and UK, both of whom have stated there is no technical concern requiring action on Boeing aircraft. The US Federal Aviation Administration and the UK Civil Aviation Authority have ruled out mandatory inspections, even as India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and South Korea's transport ministry have ordered checks of fuel control switches on Boeing jets following the AI171 preliminary report. He noted that some airlines have independently decided to inspect the fuel cut-off switches, something he called a sensible step. However, he stressed that neither IATA nor regulators have issued a mandate for action so far. 'Let's wait for the final report, which will go into all aspects of the accident and consider any recommendations, if necessary,' he said. On the topic of cockpit cameras, Walsh reflected on how the cockpit environment has changed post-9/11. 'When I started flying, the cockpit door was open, and visitors could come in. That transparency is gone now. With the door locked, it's a more isolated space. I understand pilots' concerns, but given what we know, a video recording could be a valuable tool,' he said. The sensitive topic of pilot mental health was also addressed directly. Walsh said psychological well-being has always been a focus of pilot assessments. 'We've done medical exams every 6 or 12 months, and psychological screening is part of the selection process. After the Germanwings crash, the industry has done a lot more in this area,' he said.

It's dirty, there's no privacy and we get only plain rice to eat,' she said in an interview, alleging that many of their belongings, including the ashes of her late son, were taken. She insists the media coverage has misrepresented her. 'Everything shown on TV about us is false. I have videos and photos that show how clean and happy our life was before.' An emotional return to India and questions over custody Kutina said she hasn't returned to Russia due to personal losses and legal issues, the most devastating being the death of her son nine months ago. 'There were multiple personal losses, not just the death of my son, but also a few other close people. We were constantly dealing with grief, paperwork, and other problems.' Despite visiting four other countries recently, Kutina says she always found herself returning to India. 'We love India deeply, its environment, its people, everything.' Gujarat's Banni Grasslands ready to host cheetahs, say officials
The Banni Grasslands in Gujarat, the largest such expanse in the Indian subcontinent and one of the 10 sites selected for cheetah rehabilitation in the country, is now fully prepared to host the big cats, officials said on Wednesday (July 16, 2025). Jaipal Singh, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Gujarat, told PTI that a breeding centre for cheetahs has been set up and efforts are underway to further enhance the prey population of chital and sambar. "We are ready with everything, including quarantine and soft release bomas [enclosures]. However, the National Tiger Conservation Authority and the Cheetah Project Steering Committee will decide when the animals will be brought here," he said. Mr. Singh said a 600-hectare enclosure has been developed, the herbivore population has been increased, and facilities such as CCTV monitoring and a dedicated veterinary centre have been established. Fences have been installed to prevent the infiltration of other large carnivores into the cheetah enclosures. Veterinarians have also been trained at Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park, the first site in India to host cheetahs translocated from Africa, he added. According to the plan to introduce cheetahs in the Banni Grasslands, the natural habitat preferences of cheetahs in Africa include grasslands, savannahs and scrublands, and the habitat conditions in Banni closely match these. Vantara, a Jamnagar-based rescue, conservation and rehabilitation facility of the Reliance Foundation, posted on Instagram that in collaboration with the Gujarat Forest Department, it has reintroduced spotted deer into the Banni Grasslands. "The introduction of spotted deer marks a key step in restoring ecological balance in Banni. As a committed partner, Vantara supports this effort with scientific expertise, veterinary care and technical support, working alongside the government to protect India's natural heritage," it said. Mr. Singh said the move is part of broader efforts to increase the prey population in the arid grassland landscape. Officials said that cheetahs are likely to be introduced in the Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh before they are sent to the Bunni Grasslands. The State government officially declared Veerangana Durgavati a tiger reserve in September 2023. Located about 20 kilometres from Bhopal, it spans 2,339 square kilometres and covers parts of Narsinghpur, Sagar and Damoh districts. An NTCA team reviewed the preparations in the tiger reserve in June. Thereafter, officials said, cheetahs will be introduced into the Bunni grasslands in Gujarat's Kutch district and then in the Shahgarh Bulge region in Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan. The 10 potential sites listed in the action plan for cheetah introduction are: Guru Ghasidas National Park in Chhattisgarh; Banni grasslands in Gujarat; Dubri Wildlife Sanctuary, Sanjay National Park, Bagdara Wildlife Sanctuary, Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary (now Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve) and Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh; Desert National Park and Shahgarh grasslands in Rajasthan and Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh. Seventy years after cheetahs went extinct in India, the government launched the Project Cheetah to establish a sustainable population of the big cat in the country. As part of the reintroduction effort, 20 African cheetahs were brought to Kuno National Park: eight from Namibia in September 2022 and 12 from South Africa in February 2023. Eleven of them have survived, including two that were transferred to Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary in April. Since the introduction of African cheetahs, 26 cubs have been born in India, of which 17 have survived.
