Pakistani health tech startup MedIQ raises $6m
According to a statement released Thursday, the funding round is one of the largest in the history of the Kingdom's health tech sector and will be used to fuel MedIQ's further expansion across a market sector worth SAR 7.2bn (almost $2bn) in Saudi Arabia.
Founded in Pakistan in 2020 by physician-turned-health economist and entrepreneur Dr. Saira Siddique, the startup has a vision to become 'the operating system' for healthcare in the MENAP (Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan) region.
The company had previously raised $3.8m in seed and bridge rounds to build its foundation in Pakistan. It has raised a total of $9.8 million, entered Saudi Arabia in 2023, and employs 180 people across Islamabad and Riyadh.
According to Yousef AlYousefi, CEO of Joa Capital: 'We're excited to see MedIQ continue its growth in SA where it has become the undisputed market leader.'
He said the firm's growth plans underline its commitment 'to creating value for patients and healthcare providers in Saudi Arabia and Middle East, by empowering them with technology, data, ease of access and affordable solutions in healthcare.'
Meanwhile Soumaya Ben Beya Dridje, partner at Rasmal Ventures, said: 'MedIQ's bold vision to transform healthcare delivery across the Middle East and beyond deeply resonates with us.'
'Our investment, alongside Joa Capital, reflects our commitment to advancing health tech solutions that redefine traditional healthcare models. By backing startups like MedIQ, we aim to accelerate digital transformation and strengthen the GCC and regional healthcare ecosystem.'
MedIQ's plans for growth include AI-driven digitization of healthcare facilities and back-office operations of insurance companies to provide seamless patient-centred experience for improved patient satisfaction. This shall be followed by the expansion to Qatar and neighbouring GCC countries.
The story behind MedIQ
MedIQ was born out of a personal health crisis experienced by Dr Saira Siddique, who was left paralyzed and hospitalized for over a year. During this time, she experienced 'the fragmented and inaccessible nature of Pakistan's healthcare system,' according to the statement.
This led her to launch MedIQ, 'with the goal of creating a coherent, interconnected, and digitally enabled healthcare ecosystem'.
'MedIQ isn't just another health app,' she said.
'We're building the backbone of digital healthcare — a scalable infrastructure that improves outcomes and reduces costs. It started with a simple idea: what if healthcare worked like any modern service — connected, convenient, and patient-first?'

Reserves edge up, rupee gains for 4th week
Pakistan's foreign exchange reserves recorded a slight improvement during the week ended August 8, 2025, with the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) holdings rising $11 million to $14.243 billion. According to data released by the central bank, the country's total liquid foreign reserves stood at $19.497 billion. Of this, commercial banks held net reserves of $5.254 billion, while the SBP accounted for the remaining $14.243 billion. Moreover, on Friday, the SBP injected around Rs12 trillion into the banking system through a reverse repo auction. The market operation included Rs191 billion for seven-day tenors at 11.04% and Rs11.812 trillion for 14-day tenors at 11.01%. The Pakistani rupee extended its upward momentum, marking its fourth consecutive week of gains against the US dollar. According to Ismail Iqbal Securities, the local currency appreciated 0.06% day-on-day to close at 282.06 against the greenback. On a calendar-year-to-date basis, however, the rupee has depreciated 1.25%, while in the current fiscal year to date, it has gained 0.60%. AKD Securities noted that the rupee gained for the fourth consecutive week against the US dollar. Meanwhile, gold prices in Pakistan fell, tracking global trends, where the yellow metal edged higher but remained on course for a weekly loss as hotter-than-expected US inflation data dampened prospects of near-term interest rate cuts. Market attention has shifted to the much-anticipated meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. In the local market, the price of gold per tola dropped Rs1,000 to Rs357,100, according to the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association. The price of 10-gram gold also declined, settling at Rs306,155, after a decrease of Rs858. Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, gold had slipped by Rs200 per tola to Rs358,100. Interactive Commodities Director Adnan Agar noted that the gold market has seen limited movement, with prices fluctuating within a narrow range of about $10 to $15. "The market is relatively stable because of the Russia-US summit. Any significant shift will likely be seen on Monday once the outcome of talks becomes clear," he said. Spot gold rose 0.2% to $3,342.62 per ounce by 11:16 am EDT (1516 GMT), but was down 1.7% for the week, according to Reuters.

CCP upholds order against GCC Medical Centres
ISLAMABAD: The Competition Appellate Tribunal (CAT) has upheld the Competition Commission of Pakistan's (CCP) order against 20 medical centers and laboratories and their five associations for collusive price fixing, territorial allocation of customers, and other anti-competitive practices in mandatory pre-departure medical examinations for Pakistani workers bound for Gulf countries. The Tribunal upheld CCP's findings of competition law violations but reduced the penalties from PKR 20 million per medical center and PKR 10 million per Gulf Approved Medical Centres Administrative Offices (GAMCAs) to PKR 2 million per center and PKR 1 million per GAMCA. The case concerns a captive market of low-income Pakistani labourers — many securing manual jobs in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, and Kuwait — who must undergo medical tests at GCC-approved centers before departure. The CCP's inquiry found that GAMCAs in five regions — Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Lahore, Peshawar, Karachi, and Multan — allocated customers on a rotational basis. This eliminated competition on price and service quality. Workers were bound to a specific center, charged a uniform fee, and in some cases subjected to unnecessary repeat tests for additional payments. The CCP initiated its inquiry on a complaint by the Pakistan Overseas Employment Promoters Association (POEPA). The CCP's investigation concluded that fee fixation, territorial division, and equal allocation of customers by GAMCAs violated Sections 4 of the Competition Act, 2010. Dr. Kabir Sidhu, Chairman CCP, warned business associations against facilitating collusive practices, price fixing, or allocation of business quotas. He stressed that such platforms should be used to promote sectoral growth, enhancing competition, and to benefit consumers. Any anti-competitive conduct will be dealt with strictly under the competition law. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
