Dark Like Under by Alice Chadwick review – the kids aren't all right
Alice Chadwick's debut novel takes place during a single day, which begins with the death of geography teacher Mr Ardennes, a calming presence in his unnamed, middle-England grammar school. We meet him briefly at the novel's start – still alive – night-walking as if he could 'never be easy'.
After the announcement of the news in assembly, the day marches on unimpeded, with brutal precision. Chadwick's book is not only underpinned by an incisive faithfulness to details – canteen cutlery like 'fish poured from a net', 1980s 'ceiling swirls like crests of royal icing' – but an unwavering adherence to her own time-stamped chapter form. Leaping between the perspectives of students and teachers, it transpires that the children's chief concerns include the forthcoming timetable changes, or the injustice of the deceased teacher no longer marking their projects.
Those more deeply troubled are further beyond reach: the enigmatic, enthralling Tin, who 'made the hot, empty days sparkle like broken glass'. Tin has suffered a tragedy of her own, making the event seem like history repeating – but her classmates are convinced her upset pertains to her boyfriend Jonah and best friend Robin, together involved in 'a Sunday night of bonus shock and betrayal'.
Graver tensions are also at work. Beneath the day's onslaught of normality, it becomes clear that Mr Ardennes was on one side of a split between a more progressive faction of teachers and a more tyrannical group, spearheaded by Gomme – nicknamed 'the Mad Penguin'. This divide serves to be microcosmic of 1980s society as a whole: workers railing against the authorities.
Against a backdrop of Thatcher and the Falklands war, Chadwick's cast of children, on the precipice of adulthood, are caught in the crosshairs of adult politics. Each represents a different class archetype and these are shrewdly – if slightly cruelly – drawn. In the refraction of their various viewpoints, Chadwick is adept at finding the lesser tragedies bursting at the seams, amounting to a clever and compassionate debut.

Love Island fans name show's real villain branding them ‘rotten to the core'
LOVE Island fans have named this year's villain after insisting she is "rotten to the core". A villa feud began to emerge as Shakira was left singled out by the girls during her attempts to steal one of their boys and remain in the villa. 3 3 It saw Shakira and bombshell Toni sidelined as the five other girls cast judgement on their antics. However, viewers at home have picked out who they believe is the instigator and blasted her for taking aim at Shakira. Megan Moore was called out by fans as the divide began to take hold of the villa. Writing on X - formerly Twitter - one wrote: "That Meg needs to to the core." Someone else agreed, writing: "Someone get Meg out of there." A third then penned: "I need Meg to go home she's horrible." The comments continued to flood in as another viewer said of Meg: "Blonde Meg thinks she's that girl don't she." Before a fifth posted: "Meg p***ing me off the most and I thought I was gonna like her but she's just p***ing me off." Meg is currently coupled up with Dejon in the villa and the pair appear to be going smoothly. She seemed unaffected by the chance of Shakira stealing her partner and instead focused on hyping the other girls up in order to ensure that their partner's would not want to stand up for the brunette stunner. First person dumped from Love Island revealed Thankfully for Meg, her partner Dejon chose to stick by her and did not stand up for the chance to re-couple with Shakira. Sadly, for Sophie, Helena, and Alima, they're partner all felt the grass was greener with Shakira. Sophie was eventually dumped from the villa when Shakira chose Harry to be her new villa partner. 3

Love Island villa is left shaken as first Islander is dumped in brutal twist while TWO new hunky bombshells arrive
The Love Island villa was left extremely shaken during Tuesday night's show as Sophie Lee was axed from the show, and two new bombshells arrived. Following the arrival of first bombshell Toni, who surprised the singletons at the close of Monday's episode, Semi pro footballer Shea Mannings and fitness influencer Remell Mullins are the latest arrivals. Shea, who is a Scaffolder from Bristol, revealed he has a young son, and he will be taking that 'into consideration' when coupling up. He added: 'She needs to be bubbly and we need to have that initial spark. She needs to have a nice personality - like I think I have - so that we match together.' Meanwhile, Remell is a Self Improvement Content Creator who boasts a massive 18million likes and half a million followers on TikTok. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Remell shared he is looking for, 'A bubbly, confident, ambitious and fun girl. One feature that stands out to me is a nice smile, nice teeth and someone that can keep me on my toes.' When asked where he might be found in the villa in the morning, he replied: 'I might be cooking a nice high protein meal, I might be doing my skincare routine, something to level up.' The bombshells will make their arrival during Wednesday's episode. Tuesday's episode saw Maya Jama return to the villa to send Sophie home, after Shakira picked to couple up with Harry in a shock twist. Love Island returned on Monday and after promising a series of twists, Maya was sure to deliver. The Islanders were coupled up earlier in the day after the girls matched themselves to dating profiles - but Maya returned later that night with big news. After a day of getting to know each other, the couples were gathered at the fire pit where they were dealt the news that American bombshell Toni Laites would be entering and stealing one of the boys. Forced to make her decision on the spot, Toni, 24, picked taxi driver Ben Holbrough - leaving construction project manager Shakira Khan, 26, single and vulnerable. Maya revealed that Shakira would have just 24 hours to form a connection with one of the boys or risk being dumped from the island. In order to stay in the villa, Shakira would have to convince one of the boys to leave their partner the following evening. If she manages to do this whichever girl is left single will be dumped... but if she doesn't, it's Shakira who will face the chop. At the start of the episode, the ladies - Shakira , Meg, Alima, Sophie, Megan and Helena - were first to enter the villa with talk soon turning to the boys they could potentially couple up with. However, in contrast to recent series, it wasn't the viewers that would be picking the couples, but instead the girls were tasked with choosing their boys based on their dating profiles. Explaining the huge change, Maya told the girls: 'This year things are slightly different. You've told me what your type on paper is, but does that match your ideal man in reality? Come and join me by the pool.' As the girls lined up, she continued: 'Girls, in front of you there are six love hearts and each boy has given me their dating profile which is written on each of these hearts - shall we have a look at what these boys have to offer?' The girls then checked out the descriptions of the island's boys - Ben, Dejon, Harry, Conor, Blu and Tommy. They then had to decide to who they'd like to pair up with based on key stats with the boys' name, age, job and a headline. Headlines included lines such as: ' I like to play hard and work harder! I love to play, so I work very hard...' in order to help the girls make their big decisions. After a day of getting to know each other, the couples were gathered at the fire pit where they were dealt the news that American bombshell Toni Laites (pictured) would be entering and stealing one of the boys After discussing the boys' profiles and attempting to figure out which lad could be right for them, Maya then forced them to make their choice. Counting to three, the stunner informed the ladies that they must run to their chosen heart, with only one girl allowed to stand next to each heart. And after the girls had chosen their man, they were finally introduced to each boy - but it wasn't all love at first sight. Blu Chegini, 26, got eyebrows raising when he immediately made it clear stunning Scot Alima Gagio wasn't his type on paper. And Megan Moore, 25, also admitted that her couple Dejon Noel Williams, 26, also didn't fit her usual man. While Helena had a rough start as she insisted she was not interested in rugby players, before awkwardly being left to couple up with hunky pro player Connor.
