It's a new small electric crossover. Here at Top Gear we might as well have that sentence set up as a keyboard shortcut (cmd-alt-E-C) because we use it so often. New small electric crossovers keep coming, many from Chinese brands you haven't heard of.
This one's different, because it has deep roots. Renault has been selling electric cars in Britain for more than a decade. And if the electric Megane and Scenic are anything to go, it's gotten rather good at them.

The 4 itself is closely related to the wonderful Renault 5 EV, but has an 8cm longer wheelbase so there's more room for the legs of the people in the back, and their stuff in the boot. That's why it's actually a little more expensive than the R5, even if their names might make you think the prices are the other way around.
The R4 takes stylistic inspiration from the 1961 Renault 4: that was one of the first hatchbacks, before the term was recognised. It also, by decades, predated the word 'crossover', but it was one of those too. Which is why French farmers and all sorts of residents in North Africa and South America loved it. It needed only a track, not a road. So is it retro or not?
Let's not get too carried away, because the original R4 was super-cheap and the new one is a bit more premium. Maybe if the original Land Rover had died in the mid 1990s, then the current Defender appeared now, you'd have a parallel.
Here's how they've updated the old lines. The face was once a single chromed frame with the round lamps at the end, and grille in the middle: now the chrome is substituted by an LED perimeter track. A cut-line between this and the wings follows a gap between the original's wings and forward-opening bonnet-grille assembly.

On the tall flattish sides, you've ridged door panels, like the R4 GTL had. The reverse-raked rear door window and trapezoid rearmost side window keep the faith with the characteristic rhythm of the old car's fenestration. An upright tailgate and tall narrow little lamp clusters complete the picture.
Our hot take? The design isn't as successful as the Renault 5, with more than a whiff of breadvan about it and palpable Mini Countryman vibes from the back. But it's friendly and accessible, and on balance we like it. And inside? Sliding windows? Rubber mats? Garden-implement gear lever?
This latest Renault 4 is dripping with nods to the past. But it's not here to bait you with nostalgia, the detailing throughout is genuinely lovely and fully modern at the same time. The fabric seats (pictured) are ace, and you'll be noticing new details for ages. Look out for the Easter egg on the windshield…
Renault's excellent interface includes well-organised screens and plenty of useful quick-access switches.
In the back, two grown-ups can sit without much hardship. Three across would be a squeeze but doable for a short trip. The boot is surprisingly deep too. More about this under the Interior tab of this review. How does it drive?
Brilliantly. It's a real pleasure to get along with. You drive it with your toes and fingertips, as the pedals and steering are light and quick-acting. But once you've acclimatised, that makes it feel perky.
The single motor is 148bhp, but it's well under 1,500kg so gets along well enough: 0-62mph takes 8.2 seconds. The suspension is pretty sophisticated in design, with multi-link at the rear, so it's precise through bends and quiet when it hits bumps.
The old R4 had a pillowy ride and leant pretty much onto its wing mirrors at the sniff of a tight corner. The new one is quite tightly sprung and very controlled.
It's also pretty efficient. Both versions in the UK have a 52kWh battery, for 250 miles WLTP range. We saw 215 miles in practice, including some quite vigorous back-road driving. Cruising at motorway speeds will knock the estimate down to 180-odd miles, even in warm weather. The real test will come in the depths of January, when conditions are at their least agreeable. What about the rivals?
The Ford Puma Gen-E is the most obvious, along with a bunch from the Stellantis empire – Peugeot e-2008, and the electric versions of the Vauxhall Mokka and Jeep Avenger. You could also get into a slightly larger Chinese-branded EV for similar money, like the MG4. A base-model from the Volvo EX30 or Smart #1 or Mini Aceman line-up all cost more than an R4 for less range.
The mighty VW group's small EVs are still stuck in the concept-car stage. Nope, a Skoda Elroq doesn't count because it's an order of magnitude bigger than this.
The R4's battery range is on-target for those price rivals. Few have substantially bigger battery options either, except the MG4 for considerably more money. And on the subject of money…
Ah yes, some numbers would help. Things kick off at a fiver under £27k for the base model, with mid- and top-spec trims pitched at £29k and £31k apiece. Like-for-like that makes it two Gs more than the Renault 5. And at the time of typing, it looks like both will qualify for a handy government grant worth thousands too. What's the verdict?

A staggering eight million original Renault 4s were sold, but your memory of it is likely as rusty as they mostly are now. So don't worry if all this retro talk doesn't resonate with you.
The new Renault 4 combines dynamic talent with an admirable amount of suppleness over the UK's often cratered road network. That's a hard trick to pull off.
And while the design isn't as – how shall we put this – purposeful as the R5's, it's recognisably different from the waves of generic-looking stuff washing up in dealers all over the country, with marvellous detailing inside and out. If you're not keen at first, give it time… it'll grow on you.
And there's goodness in the R4 that goes beyond design: the interior is sublime, the tech is well executed, it's value for money and (most importantly of all) unfailingly uplifting to drive. Renault has hit another home run with this.

A STRUGGLING car maker has been handed a massive new upgrade at a UK plant after it confirmed hundreds of jobs would be lost. Nissan 's plant in Sunderland has now gone live with its new electric truck charging station. 2 At the end of last month, the firm announced the job cuts after it reported £4 billion losses in the last financial year. The facility, which cost £1.4million, is the first private, shared charging station of its kind in the UK. It is expected to cut carbon emissions by around 1,500 tonnes a year. Michael Simpson, vice president of supply chain management at Nissan AMIEO, said: "It is fantastic for our plant to be leading the charge to an electrified supply chain with this project. "We welcome the support we've received from our partners to bring the charging station to life and we're proud of what we have achieved. "The charging station looks brilliant and is a big step forward in Nissan's EV360 vision, which brings together electric vehicles, zero carbon energy and battery manufacturing." The station is capable of supporting 60 UK eHGV deliveries to the plant every day and marks just the beginning of the plant's move towards electrifying its supply chain. Mr Simpson added: 'We're exploring further opportunities to allow other hauliers to use the charging station as well as looking at other opportunities to maximise its full potential.' The charging station can support a fleet of 25 trucks, with a charging capacity of up to 360kW. The trucks will pick up parts from Nissan's UK supply base, going as far afield as Derby and also delivering finished vehicles to and from the Tyne port. That will mean more than 2.4million kilometres will be travelled every years, completely electrified and saving 1,500 tonnes of CO2 each year. The project is part of the Electric Freightway consortium, which involves Nissan, GRIDSERVE, Fergusons, Yusen, and BCA, and is aimed at accelerating the adoption of eHGVs and high-power charging infrastructure, The Northern Echo reports. UK government minister for the future of roads Lilian Greenwood said: "We're working closely with the road freight sector to slash transport emissions, and our £200million zero emission HGV programme is helping businesses across the country to power the electrification of their fleets. "It's great to see Nissan taking advantage of our scheme which is supporting high paid jobs and putting money in the pockets of working people – all part of delivering our Plan for Change." The charging station forms a key part of Nissan's wider EV36Zero plan, which aims to integrate electric vehicle production, renewable energy, and battery manufacturing. Daniel Kunkel, CEO of GRIDSERVE, said: "The decarbonisation of transport logistics is much stronger and reaches far wider when done in partnership. "This is why, as leaders of the Electric Freightway consortium, we are so pleased to support this UK first with Nissan and their haulage partners. "Depot charging is critical for the electrification of HGVs, going hand in hand with future public infrastructure developments. "As a first shared usage site, this location is leading the way in sustainable freight logistics." The news comes after the car manufacturer announced around 250 jobs from its Sunderland factory would be axed. The jobs will be cut under a "voluntary leave scheme" letting employees choose to leave their roles with support from the company. It comes just weeks after the Japanese firm announced the new Nissan Leaf would be made at the Sunderland site. The job losses will hit non-manufacturing positions. Nissan has announced the cuts amid a desperate bid to balance the books and support a global effort to become a more "resilient business." The attempts to save the brand were ramped up after merger talks with Honda fell through. Earlier this year the firm announced 20,000 job losses, seven factory closures and a pause on all post-2026 new car development. The closures of seven of its factories would see the brand limited to just 10 sites. 2

Stellantis sees greater tariff impact after $2.7 bln first-half loss

MILAN, July 21 (Reuters) - Stellantis ( opens new tab expects more impact from U.S. tariffs on vehicles and auto part imports in the second half of 2025, the company said on Monday as it reported a preliminary 2.3 billion euro ($2.7 billion) net loss for the first six months of the year. The carmaker, which owns a sprawling portfolio of brands including Jeep, Ram, Peugeot and Fiat, said President Donald Trump's tariffs had cost it 300 million euros so far as the company reduced vehicle shipments and cut some production to adjust manufacturing levels. But Chief Financial Officer Doug Ostermann told analysts that the 300 million euro impact was not representative of what the group expects for the second half, as tariffs only came into effect part way through the first half. "We'll see significantly more in the second half unless things change ... given the current outlook, I would expect to see that figure probably double in the second half or more," he said, adding that Stellantis was seeing a total full-year impact of between 1 and 1.5 billion euros. Stellantis, which under new CEO Antonio Filosa faces the challenge of revamping its product ranges in Europe and the United States, said it also booked 3.3 billion euros in pre-tax charges for the first half. These were due to programme cancellations, including a hydrogen fuel cell project and money set aside for fines linked to U.S. pre-Trump carbon emission regulation. It was also investing more in popular hybrid cars in Europe and large gasoline-powered models in the U.S. market. Last year, more than 40% of the 1.2 million vehicles Stellantis sold in the United States were imports, mostly from Mexico and Canada where Trump has imposed tariffs of 25%. Imports from the EU face levies of 30%, though these have been deferred to August 1. In April this year, the company said it had reduced vehicle imports in response to tariffs and would calibrate "production and employment to reduce impacts on profitability". The automaker's first-half results were below consensus, according to analysts at Jefferies, Bernstein and Citi. But despite the earnings miss, restructuring steps taken by Stellantis "suggest decisive actions", Bernstein analysts said. Milan-listed shares in the automaker closed up 1.5% after falling as much as 3.9% in morning trade. They are down 35% since the start of the year. In April, Stellantis suspended its profit forecasts for 2025 due to uncertainty about tariffs, but said on Monday it was publishing its unaudited preliminary financial data to align analyst forecasts with the group's actual performance. Asked whether Stellantis' situation was similar to that of rival Renault's ( opens new tab, whose shares fell as much as 18% last week when it issued a profit warning on the back of softening demand for cars and vans in Europe, Ostermann said Europe was a "very competitive environment". "I won't disagree with our counterparts at Renault," he said. Stellantis' first-half loss, versus a 5.6 billion euro net profit a year earlier, underscores the tough challenges for Filosa, who was appointed in May after a disastrous performance in the company's crucial U.S. market in 2024 forced the ousting of former boss Carlos Tavares. In a letter to employees seen by Reuters the new CEO on Monday promised that 2025 would be "a year of gradual and sustainable improvement" after a "tough first half, with increasing external headwinds". Stellantis, which will publish its final results for the first half on July 29, said it burnt through 2.3 billion euros of cash in the January-June period. ($1 = 0.8595 euros)
