Green Shadows to chase a return to the Big Dance at Tamworth meeting

The Age23-04-2025
The Rosehill training combination of Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou will attempt to qualify talented performer Green Shadows for a second straight Big Dance when it tackles Thursday's $200,000 Tamworth City Toyota Tamworth Showcase Cup (1400m).
Ryan and Alexiou managed to win last year's Goulburn Cup with Green Shadows, before the son of Menari went on to finish 13th behind Gringotts in the Big Dance at Randwick in November.
The five-year-old hasn't raced since then and resumes in the Tamworth feature on the back of two barrier trials.
'The Tamworth Cup looks a nice race for him to kick off his campaign in,' said Ryan. 'We've given him a couple of trials, and he was beaten just under a length and a half in the latest of them at Randwick.
'Braith Nock takes the ride on him at Tamworth, and he's drawn a good barrier.'

Green Shadows is a winner of five of his 27 starts, with a further six second placings. He's earned almost $470,000 and first prize in the Tamworth Cup is worth $109,000.
'He's been a consistent horse for connections, and you'd love a stable full of a horse like him,' said Ryan. 'He won his first start in a race at Goulburn, has taken on Group 1 company in his career, and is still going as well as ever.'
Green Shadows will face stern opposition in the Tamworth Cup with the Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald trained stablemates West Of Africa and Sibaaq lining up.

$6000 mare shines for new partners David Jolly and Justin Potter at Morphettville Parks

Bargain buy mare Nextonixs gave South Australian trainers David Jolly and Justin Potter their first metro win as a partnership at Morphettville Parks. Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Sharp mare Nextonixs blitzed her rivals in a bold frontrunning win at Morphettville Parks on Saturday, handing trainers David Jolly and Justin Potter a strong start to their new partnership. The daughter of Tassort dashed to the lead under leading apprentice Rochelle Milnes and kicked at the top of the straight in an impressive display of raw speed, scoring a comfortable 1¼-length win over Kalasec in a 0-66 Handicap (1000m). • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. Potter, who rode 1309 winners, called time on his 25-year career as a jockey in July, teaming up with Jolly, a Group 1-winning trainer who has 966 winners in his own right. A $6000 bargain buy at the 2023 Inglis Gold Yearling Sale, Nextonixs ($10 Sportsbet) has already repaid that fee in spades, winning three races from five starts, and $95,680 in prizemoney. â€' (@Racing) January 24, 2025 • Superstar v apprentice: J-Mac staves off Siena in Rosehill slugfest 'We bought her cheaply as a yearling, we probably just liked her pedigree a little bit,' Jolly said post-race. 'She's very fast, she's had one failure, here during the summer, she jarred up a little bit leading into it. 'Justin (Potter) said a couple of weeks ago, 'she's flying this thing', Streetcar Fury is a fast horse but we've had to take him away from her, because he hasn't been able to keep up with her (at trackwork). 'I was very confident leading into today that she was going well. She's a cantankerous little thing, very sassy, she's very hard work on the ground but a good ride.' • Maher colt comes out on top in Vain battle Jolly believes a race down the hill at Oakbank will suit the four-year-old, but also has a Victorian assignment in his cross hairs. 'I'd love to take her to Moonee Valley for a Friday night, she's got a very high cruising speed and a kick,' he said. It was an afternoon of mixed emotions for Murray Bridge trainers Ron Daniel and Trish Stanbury, the pair saluted with promising mare Hot Strut in a Class 2 over 1400m, but will anxiously await scans for stakes winner, Colmar, who pulled up lame after finishing sixth as favourite in a Benchmark 72 (1250m). 'It's pretty upsetting, we come here thinking it was a really good race for him today leading into the Balak Cup (Sep 10),' Daniel said. 'Rochelle (Milnes) said he was travelling OK then felt a bit funny. He pulled up, he was definitely sore, his nearside fetlock is pretty big.' Milnes, Jason Holder and Jake Toeroek shared riding honours on Saturday's nine-race program, the three premiership-winning hoops nailed a double each. It was also a landmark day for trainer Tyler Donaldson-Aitken, the Ballarat handler nailed his first metro winner with Welcometotheshow, who charged home to win the final race on the card, a 0-62 Handicap over 1250m. Gerald Ryan can't wait for spring after Skyhook equals record in The Rosebud at Rosehill

Skyhook made an early spring carnival statement when equalling a weight-carrying record to win the first Sydney stakes race of the new season at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. There was no fluke about Skyhook 's win in the Listed $200,000 The Rosebud (1100m), either. The race was run at a farcical early tempo, he settled last and had to come around the field in heavy track conditions. But Skyhook managed to overcome all this while carrying topweight of 60.5kg – a feat achieved only once previously by the talented Menari when he won the Rosebud in 2017. Gerald Ryan, who trains Skyhook in partnership with Sterling Alexiou, also prepared Menari and gave a glowing endorsement of his emerging three-year-old sprinter. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'Skyhook worked here on Wednesday week ago on the course proper and my track rider Jason, who has ridden work for me for 10 or 12 years, said this is the best horse we've had since Menari,'' Ryan said. 'He's a good horse, Skyhook. If they had have recalled entries for the Missile Stakes and run it today, I was tempted to run him in the Missile Stakes with 52.5kg on his back instead of this race with 60.5kg.'' Skyhook ($4.40), ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, finished powerfully out towards the centre of the track to run down Grand Prairie ($5.50) and score by a half-length with Pallaton ($2.40 favourite) two lengths away third. • What the jockeys said: Rosebud day It was an impressive return by Skyhook who was having his first start since finishing seventh in Marhoona's Golden Slipper last autumn. 'We were never going to go to the Golden Slipper until he won the Pago Pago Stakes,'' Ryan admitted. 'His ideal preparation into the Slipper would have been if he had won that race at Randwick (Skyline Stakes) and gone three weeks into the Slipper. 'That's one of the reasons we ran him today and got him up early because I don't reckon he's a horse that can go two weeks-two weeks between runs. 'He's a horse that needs his races spaced. We'll now go four weeks into The Run To The Rose and then two weeks into the Golden Rose.'' Skyhook wins the Rosebud for Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle! ðŸ' @RARacing_ @KPMcEvoy â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) August 16, 2025 Ryan then made the surprising revelation that Skyhook, a $575,000 Magic Millions Yearling Sale graduate, is the first yearling by champion sire Written Tycoon he has ever purchased. 'We've been going to the sales looking at Written Tycoons ever since Written Tycoon went to stud,'' the trainer said. 'But this is the only Written Tycoon we've bought even though we have loved him at the sales. We have been given them to train but Sterling and I have actually not bought one. 'We saw this colt at Arrowfield Stud and they are good, they let you know everything about the horse, and we liked him a lot.'' • Ninja finds kick to hang on for city win Skyhook's Rosebud comeback success improved his race record to two wins (and two placings) from five starts for earnings of nearly $400,000 – with more to come. Ryan said he was unsure how Skyhook would cope with the heavy track as all the colt's runs last season were on firm tracks. 'I went through all the Written Tycoon's (performances) on wet tracks and he hadn't got many wet trackers,'' the trainer said. 'But this colt's had a great preparation, he's a horse that doesn't take heaps of work, he doesn't get gross and he's got the right attitude. 'He probably doesn't look any different now to what he did in the autumn, but on the scales he's heavier but looking at him physically, he's not. He's such a fluent-actioned horse, a very athletic horse.'' The Ryan and Alexiou stable's other runner, Blitzburg finished only fifth, beaten nearly seventh lengths. 'Blitzburg missed the start but I was surprised he didn't show more speed,'' Ryan said. 'Whether it's the ground, I don't know, as they didn't seem to go that quick. 'I was a little disappointed with him because he has been going well at home. 'We might have to reassess, he's better than that.' Trainer Peter Snowden deliberately set Grand Prairie for the Rosebud and the three-year-old went close to securing a stakes race win. Pallaton settled behind the leaders in a slowly-run race and was forced to stay close to the rail in the straight where the better going was wide out so he had excuse in defeat. 'Tommy (Berry, jockey) didn't want to go back to the fence on Pallaton in the straight as it is clearly inferior ground,'' trainer Freedman said. 'But when the two in front didn't move anywhere, he had no other option. 'His defeat was combination of being fresh early, the pace dropping off mid-race and then having to go back to the inside. 'We will have a think about coming back here for the San Domenico Stakes in two weeks but I haven't totally ruled out the Moir Stakes. He would have only 52.5kg in the Moir and it is always run at a fast tempo which would suit this horse.''

Ryan Maloney warms up for Melbourne mission next week with a double at Doomben

Ryan Maloney warmed up for his ride on Golden Boom in next week's Listed Carlyon Stakes at The Valley with a brilliant double at Doomben on Saturday. The Brisbane-based Victorian jockey will head to Melbourne next Saturday to ride the Tony Gollan -trained gelding in the $175,000 race over 1000m. Maloney showed his class at Mekka race day at Doomben with consecutive victories on the Ciaron Maher -trained Spywire ($2.90) and Gollan's Nettuno ($3.10), who won in a nailbiter. 'It's the perfect race for him,' Maloney said about Golden Boom's opening southern mission before he possibly heads to the $750,000 Group 1 Moir Stakes on September 6. 'His trial at Deagon (on August 5) was good enough for him to be more than competitive down there. 'He's been around The Valley before and it's a fast-course track so that makes it easier from my perspective.' The classy Maloney had already racked up eight victories this season and said his goal for the rest of the year was simply to stay consistent. 'Over the last few years I certainly haven't done that and I'm not getting any younger so I need to make hay while the sun shines,' the 40-year-old said. 'I've had a good start to the season and hopefully I can continue without any niggling injuries. 'My body is pretty sound at the moment and hopefully that continues and I can keep building momentum.' Nettuno holds on to win a thriller at Doomben for @tonygollan with @RMaloney_Jockey on board! â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) August 16, 2025 Maloney said Nettuno was a quirky horse who displayed a high level of 'arrogance'. 'He's always had a good opinion of himself,' the veteran hoop said after Nettuno narrowly edged out the Matt Hoysted -trained Naval Trader ($10) in a thriller. 'He's shown great ability from day dot and it's just a matter of keeping him happy in his races because if things go wrong then he can overdo it. 'Today he got the right run to suit and he showed what he can do.' The David Murphy -trained Cyber City pulled off the upset of the day when he saluted at $51 odds in a QTIS 3YO Handicap over 1350m. Taylor Marshall was aboard the three-year-old gelding on his final day of racing before the jockey serves a seven-day suspension. It's a demolition job! ðŸ'¥ Cyber City dominates at Doomben for trainer David Murphy at BIG odds! ðŸ'° â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) August 16, 2025 'Everything David said played out – the horse would want to bowl along at a genuine tempo and most likely lead,' Marshall said. 'My job was to get him to settle and find that rhythm which we did. I think this horse has got plenty of potential, he's very untapped and raw, so exciting times ahead.' Murphy said Cyber City had enough raw talent but little luck until his Saturday debut at Doomben when he thumped Wannabe Brutal ($4.80) by 5½ lengths, with Lonesome Soul in third. 'You know those horses who have no luck, well he's been one of those horses,' Murphy said. 'I talked to the owner (Andrew Knox) and I said why don't we put him in a 1350m race and take luck out of it and just let him bowl to the front? 'Taylor had him travelling beautifully today and I thought it was over at the half mile. 'He's a really aggressive horse and that's the only thing that worried me today, that he'd go too hard.'
