Bangladesh replaces its founder Mujibur Rehman with temples, landmarks in new currency notes
The Bangladesh Bank has unveiled redesigned Tk 20, Tk 50, and Tk 1,000 notes ahead of Eid. 'Under the new series and design, the notes will not feature any human portraits, but will instead showcase natural landscapes and traditional landmarks,' Bangladesh Bank spokesman Arif Hossain Khan told AFP.
The new notes will showcase symbols of the country's heritage, including temples, monasteries, historic buildings, and artwork by Zainul Abedin, a prominent Bangladeshi artist.
New Delhi: Bangladesh's central bank, under Nobel Laureate Mohammad Yunus' interim administration, has dropped the portrait of the country's founding father and exiled leader Sheikh Hasina's father Sheikh Mujibur Rehman from new currency notes.
The Tk 20 note features the Kantaji Temple, a Hindu temple in Dinajpur, and the Paharpur Monastery. The Tk 50 note showcases Ahsan Manzil, a palace in capital Dhaka and a famine-era painting by Zainul Abedin. The Tk 1,000 note, printed in purple, includes images of the National Martyrs' Memorial and the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. All three bear the Royal Bengal Tiger watermark and the bank's monogram.
The redesigned notes are being introduced following a political controversy over Sheikh Mujibur Rehman's face on the currency notes. Last Eid, despite tradition, no new notes were issued. After the July protests and the ousting of ex-Prime Minister Hasina, the central bank barred commercial banks from circulating stored notes bearing Mujib's image.
The central bank says the new designs aim to curb counterfeiting while emphasising national identity through depictions of historic and religious landmarks. The updated banknotes will gradually replace existing notes, though older versions featuring Mujib's portrait as well as current coins will remain legal tender, The Daily Star reported.

Symbolic changes
The currency redesign is the latest in a series of symbolic changes made under the interim administration.
Similar changes have surfaced in the education sector. The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) has revised the content of 441 textbooks for the 2025 academic year, removing or altering references to Mujib's role in Bangladesh's independence. Some new textbooks now credit General Ziaur Rahman with declaring the country's freedom, reversing decades of official narrative. Over 400 million updated textbooks have already been distributed to students nationwide, according to The Daily Star.

UBT flays Sena over Durgadi temple visit curbs on Eid
Kalyan: Members from both Shiv Sena's Eknath Shinde and UBT factions held separate protests near Durgadi fort in Kalyan on Saturday. The fort houses religious sites for both Hindus and Muslims. During Bakr Eid, Muslim worshippers gather in large numbers to pray at the fort's Idgah section. Consequently, Hindu devotees are restricted from entering the Durga temple located at the fort's front to maintain peace. On Saturday, police prevented both Sena factions from crossing the barricades near the fort. The Sena UBT's up neta Vijay Salvi criticised Shiv Sena, noting that while the Ghanta Naad movement was initiated by Anand Dighe in 1982, with deputy CM Eknath Shinde leading it for many years, the state administration has now been restricting devotee entry despite his positions as CM and deputy CM showing duplicity on Hindutva." Sena MLA Vishwanath Bhoir also criticised the administration for the restrictions on temple entry. — Pradeep Gupta

Will address staff crunch in Mapusa municipality: Rane
Panaji: Acknowledging the staff crunch faced by various municipalities in the state, town and country planning minister Vishwajit Rane on Friday said that the directorate of municipal administration has been asked to assess the shortage and create fresh posts. Rane, who was speaking at the inaugural of the renovated Mapusa Municipal Council building, said that the creation of a common cadre for municipalities, which has been pending for over five years, will help address the inefficiencies at the municipal level. 'We will work towards increasing the municipality staff. I told the DMA that what we need is an assessment first,' said Rane. 'There is a requirement for a common cadre. The current staff strength is based on the earlier time when there were nine councillors. Now the councillors have increased, and that is why staff has to be increased. We need to make our municipalities independent.' Mapusa MLA Joshua De Souza informed Rane that a shortage of staff was delaying key works that the Mapusa Municipal Council has taken up. 'I received a proposal for the market complex, and it will be my endeavour to place this proposal at the next GSUDA meeting. The expenditure for this project I will discuss with the CM and find the money. Mapusa needs a town planning scheme,' said Rane. Rane said that he will ensure that sanction is accorded for key projects proposed for Mapusa. He also said that the ICU at the North Goa district hospital will be fully utilised. Shashank Narvekar, the councillor for Mapusa's ward no. 5, skipped the inaugural citing illegalities. He said that the building lacks the required NOCs from the health department, the electricity department, and the PWD and thus also lacks an occupancy certificate. 'It appears that the commercial complex of Mapusa Municipal Council is incomplete, illegally constructed, and wrongly planned,' said Narvekar. Goa fish production peaks in 2023, number slips through net in 2024
Margao: Goa's fish production peaked at 140.3 tonnes in 2022-23, marking the highest output in eight years, before dropping to 135.7 tonnes in 2023-24. The latest data released by the Union ministry of statistics and programme implementation in the 'EnviStats India 2025: Environment Statistics' report shows that the fishing sector weathered significant challenges over the past decade. From 111.9 tonnes in 2015-16, fish production showed steady growth, peaking at 124 tonnes in 2017-18. However, the industry faced challenges in the subsequent years, declining to 120 tonnes in 2018-19. The worst time for this sector came during 2019-20, when production plummeted to 105 tonnes, the lowest point in the data series, representing a 15.3% drop. The downturn continued into 2020-21, though production recovered to 111 tonnes. The recovery gained momentum in 2021-22 with production reaching 116.2 tonnes, followed by a significant surge to 140.3 tonnes in 2022-23, representing a 21% increase and the highest production levels since data collection began. The decline to 135.7 tonnes in 2023-24, industry watchers said, is a cause for concern, but recovery is definitely possible. The consistent performance above 135 tonnes in recent years showed resilience in the sector, they said.
