Police make arrests at Palestine Action protest in Parliament Square as hundreds gather after group banned
Arrests were also made in Canary Wharf in a separate demonstration PROTEST ARRESTS Police make arrests at Palestine Action protest in Parliament Square as hundreds gather after group banned POLICE have made arrests at a Palestine Action protest after the group was labelled a terror organisation. The Met Police said arrests have been made at the Palestine Coalition march in London's Russell Square and Parliament Square. Advertisement One person was arrested "for a placard showing support for Palestine Action", the force said. Clusters of officers could be seen holding individual protesters sat on the edge of the grass and escorting them through swelling crowds to police vans. A separate group of officers could be seen attending to a protester lying next to the fenced-off Emmeline Pankhurst statue. The main, larger group of protesters in the middle of the central London square remained sat quietly holding their placards. Advertisement Posting on X, the police said: "This is the scene in Parliament Square. "Within this crowd a significant number of people are displaying placards expressing support for Palestine Action, which is a proscribed group. "Officers have moved in and are making arrests. "The Palestine Coalition march (a separate protest) has set off from Russell Square heading to Whitehall via Aldwych and the Strand. Advertisement "So far there has been one arrest at that event - for a placard showing support for Palestine Action." Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan, is leading the policing operation, said earlier: 'This is going to be a particularly busy few days in London with many simultaneous protests and events that will require a significant policing presence. "I'm grateful not just to the Met officers who will be working incredibly hard over the coming days but to those colleagues from other forces who have been deployed to London to support us. 'Our role in the context of protest remains as it always has been – to police without fear or favour, to enforce the law, to keep the peace by ensuring groups with opposing views do not come together and to prevent serious disorder and serious disruption to ordinary people going about their lives. Advertisement 'There is no doubt that the scale of the public order policing operation will put pressure on our resources, but Londoners can be assured that we have plans in place that will allow us continue to police in communities across all 32 boroughs, responding to emergencies and keeping the public safe.' 2 A number of arrests have been made as protests occur in London Credit: AFP 2 A protester is carried away by police officers at a 'Lift The Ban' demonstration Credit: AFP More to follow...
