Why your hair is thinning and how to fix it, according to the experts

Independent28-02-2025
In theory, signs of hair loss should be obvious.
However, the early signs that hair might be thinning are subtle.
And spotting the small window to opportunity to restore your hair's fullness and volume is key.
' Genetics play a major role in hair thinning; however lifestyle factors such as stress, diet and hormonal changes can also lead to hair loss,' explains stylist to the Swedish royals and Björn Axén CEO, Johan Hellström.
' Hair loss can also be linked to the health of the scalp since an imbalanced scalp can prevent hair growth.'
Thankfully, getting to the root cause of hair thinning is actually easier than you might think.
Stylists to the stars breakdown some of the less-than-obvious signs your hair is thinning and how to treat it.
Causes of hair loss and thinning
'The most common types of hair loss we tend to see are due to hair shedding and breakage,' explains trichologist and owner of Philip Kingsley, Anabel Kingsley.
'Telogen Effluvium – known as hair shedding – is usually triggered by an internal disturbance to the body such as, but not limited to, illness, stress, postpartum or nutritional changes or deficiencies.
'The shedding occurs usually six to 12 weeks after the event that triggered it, so it is always important to look back to pinpoint the reason,' Kingsley says.
Breakage is another cause of hair thinning. 'This often occurs from dryness or damaged hair, causing hair to become weak and brittle, and breaks due to moisture depletion,' she adds.
While hair care plays a factor, other reasons for sudden hair thinning can be down to 'hormonal changes, medications, excessive styling or simply due to ageing,' Rainbow Room 's director Wil Fleeson.
You may now be looking at your hair brush and starting to panic, but it's normal to shed strands of up to 100 a day.
'But if you see a fluctuation where you are shedding too much hair or many more hairs than what you consider to be your 'normal', then this will usually indicate some internal disturbance or imbalance,' explains Kingsley.
Some of the first signs of hair thinning include, 'a noticeable widening of the hair parting, a receding hairline – which is more common in men but can also occur in women, a weaker hair texture – so hair that feels finer and lacks volume – and slower hair growth,' explains Dr Nora, medical dermatology doctor at Rejuvenation Clinic.
'Your hair is a clear barometer of how you feel,' explains Hellström, 'it's the first thing to deteriorate when you have a mineral deficiency, for example, so diet is key.'
Like most issues, prevention is easier than the cure.
'Take a look at what you're putting into your body, not just applying to your head,' notes celebrity stylist and Fudge Professional global ambassador Jonathan Andrew, 'Upping your vitamin and omega 3 supplements, and adding nuts and seeds such as walnuts, Brazil nuts, almonds, chia seeds can play a key role in hair growth.'
For active hair thinning, Kingsley recommends addressing hormonal sensitivity with 'hair follicle stimulants such as methyl nicotinate,' along with anti-androgenic medications, stress management and prescription scalp drops.
Minoxidil is another ingredient to look out for that is known to support hair growth. 'This can be used for both male and female hair loss,' notes Andrew.

Habits that can contribute to hair thinning
'Pulling your hair back too tightly can cause breakage, and in severe cases, traction alopecia,' Kingsley warns. 'If a style is giving you a headache, it's too tight.'
She also advises against using a boar bristle brush, as 'it can scratch both the hair and scalp, causing substantial accumulative damage. Use a brush with long, flexible plastic prongs.'
Of course, like most issues when it comes to our hair, heat can be a big culprit. 'Overuse of heated styling tools is one of the worst contributors,' says Fleeson.
'Not only does heat flatten the follicle, but if already damaged, this can weaken it further and damage the hair shaft, resulting in breakage and excess thinning.'

The best hairstyle for thinning hair
There are some hairstyles that are naturally more flattering for thinning hair.
'For guys, if the hair is thinning at the front or on top, a shorter crop can work very well,' says Andrew 'waxes and pastes can also be used to boost texture and volume.'
'For women, short bobs with graduation, texture and invisible layers can be a great solution,' he says. 'Very long hair probably won't do you any favours, as this will pull the hair flat.'
For those looking for a quick fix, master stylist at Josh Wood Colour Katherine De Rozario suggests 'the root smudge technique.'
The creates a root shadow by dabbing a slightly lighter hair colour to your roots, resulting in fully covered roots and a seamless blend from root to highlight.
'It creates the appearance of a fuller hairline while also covering greys,' says De Rozario.

Mother branded a 'monster' for using controversial laser treatment on her baby son's birthmark reveals what he looks like three years later

A mother who faced fierce criticism after using laser treatment on a large birthmark on her baby's face has revealed what he looks like three years after the treatment. Brooke Atkins, 36, from the Gold Coast, Queensland, gave birth to her second child, Kingsley, in 2022, and immediately noticed he'd been born with a large Port Wine Stain (PWS) birthmark covering half of his face. Port-wine stain birthmarks are usually harmless, but if on the face - particularly over the eye - they can be linked to glaucoma and Sturge Weber Syndrome, and it turned out that Kingsley had both. Six months after his arrival in 2022, the stay-at-home mother and her partner Kewene Wallace, 30, decided to laser the mark. Sharing Kingsley's journey on social media, Brooke began to face heavy backlash, with cruel online trolls branding her a 'monster' for opting to have the controversial laser treatment. Now, two years on from when he had the laser treatment, Brooke has shared videos of what the youngster looks like aged three. In social media videos, the mark on the three-year-old's face appears to have reduced drastically, with only a pale pinkish undertone showing up beneath the skin on one side of his face. When Brooke first got Kingsley the treatment, many online were outraged. But as she pointed out in an interview with DailyMail on 2023, Port Wine Stains typically get worse and darken over time, and Kingsley's birthmark could have become considerably more noticeable as he was growing up. 'They can develop a "cobblestone" appearance, with raised bumps, ridges, and the risk of vascular blebs, where they dangerously bleed,' Brooke said at the time. 'Once a port wine stain gets to this stage, it is often very difficult to treat and laser barely has any affect, as the skin is already far too damaged.' She then decided to use a laser treatment on Kingsley's mark. 'The only way to treat a Port Wine Stain is through laser treatments, and the most effective laser for it is called the Pulsed Dye Laser. 'When he was first born, we were referred to the Queensland Children's Hospital dermatology and vascular department, where they organised the first treatment and explained in further detail why laser would be important. 'The purpose of the laser treatments is not to 'remove' the birthmark but instead keep the skin healthy, to prevent any further damage to the area.' Those viewing Kingsley's journey online didn't take kindly to the decision, with one saying: 'That birthmark is barely visible, what you're doing to him is horrible, it's more for you than him.' Others called her brainwashed and accused her of 'making him insecure the second he gets out the womb'. However, she has received positive comments from other parents, who have continued to support her journey navigating her son's challenges. Of the reception she has received online, Brooke said: 'Honestly, when I first started reading the negative comments, I sat there for a good half hour and cried to myself. 'I had a whole heap of mum guilt, and it made me question my decision, even though I knew I was doing the right thing, the cruel words still played in my head. 'I just wish these people had known about the health issues connected to these types of birthmarks before writing these things, that this wasn't for cosmetic reasons, and that as parents, this was the hardest decision we have had to make. She said trolls' comments had left her feeling like a bad mother, despite very few of the viewers having a full understanding of her son's condition. Continuing to receive backlash online, Brooke has defended the decision. 'I think having anything out there online will attract criticism, unfortunately,' she said. Though the negativity no longer upsets her, she wishes that more people were educated on Port Wine Stain birthmarks and didn't 'jump to these conclusions'. 'I tell them that this will give him the best chance at not adding to his long list of medical issues he already has. What is a port wine stain birthmark? A port wine stain is a birthmark caused by the overdevelopment of blood vessels underneath the skin. The change in the blood vessels is caused by a genetic mutation which occurs before a child is born, and will remain for the rest of a person's life – though the severity of them differs between people. Port wine stains begin as a flat red or purple mark and, over time, can become more raised, bulkier and darker in colour. They can occur anywhere on the body but 65 per cent of them appear on a person's head or neck. Around three in every 1,000 babies has a port wine stain and they are more common in girls than in boys, though the reason for this is not known. Treatment usually involves laser treatment to remove some of the dark colour from the mark, or camouflaging the discolouring using a special type of make-up. 'And if they respond rudely to that, I try my best not to tell them what I really think but sometimes it's hard.' Sturge Weber Syndrome can cause seizures, which Kingsley suffers from on a regular basis, along with other disabilities. His other condition, glaucoma, can also cause blindness. Over the course of his life, Kingsley has undergone a plethora of treatments, including having three eye surgeries for his glaucoma. He continues to suffer from health issues as a result of his disabilities, including having had more than 100 seizures over the course of his life. In a video posted to TikTok in June, Brooke revealed that Kingsley had had multiple seizures that week, only a month after having his last. 'Our son ended up having multiple seizures last week, only a month after his last,' she said. 'As a mother, it broke my heart. We have had over a month of sickness since his last seizure, and we honestly just need a break. A break from it all. A break for his little body to recover fully. We are still sick, but we are home and he is happy. 'This is the reality of so many Sturge-Weber families dealing with Epilepsy.' The three-year-old continues to be plagued by seizures, and the family have had to spend multiple overnight stays in hospitals across the country. In July however, things seemed to be looking up, with Brooke telling her followers that Kingsley had been 'doing really good' after finally recovering from 'a few sicknesses'.

Ex-partner of disgraced surgeon reveals how his horrifying double life emerged

Writer and director Benita Alexander eventually went on to co-produce He Lied About Everything, a documentary based on her former lover's fall from grace. An ex-partner of former stem cell surgeon Paolo Macchiarini thought she was living a real-life fairytale until she uncovered his dark web of lies. ‌ Writer and director Benita Alexander eventually went on to co-produce He Lied About Everything, a documentary based on her former lover's fall from grace. ‌ In 2023, Macchiarini was sentenced to two and a half years in prison by a Swedish court for aggravated assault against patients he treated. ‌ The court found he had acted with criminal intent in his treatment of three patients who received trachea transplants while he was working at the Karolinska Institute. The Mirror reports that all three patients died after suffering complications from the procedure. The court ruled that Macchiarini knew the surgeries were unlikely to succeed but disregarded the risks to the patients. Macchiarini bypassed essential safety protocols: he conducted no animal testing, clinical trials, or safety reviews before implanting the synthetic tracheas into human patients. His team also allegedly failed to obtain government approvals for the artificial windpipes, chemicals, and stem cells used, and did not seek ethical clearance from Stockholm's review board. ‌ One surviving patient, Yesim Cetir, reportedly spent three years in intensive care at Karolinska University Hospital and underwent nearly 200 surgeries. Investigations by both the Karolinska Institute and Karolinska University Hospital later revealed that complications and patient deaths may have been intentionally concealed. Macchiarini also faced accusations of scientific misconduct from several colleagues. In 2011, Macchiarini created the world's first artificial windpipe using a plastic trachea scaffold infused with a patient's own stem cells, aiming to prevent rejection of the transplanted organ. ‌ As part of her job as a producer, Alexander arranged to meet Macchiarini at Boston's Mandarin Oriental hotel to discuss his work. She later told The New York Post: 'I'm not a believer in love at first sight. But the second our eyes locked, that's what it felt like.' Though their first meeting sparked romantic feelings, Alexander tried to keep their relationship professional at first. She was coping with her ex-husband's battle with an aggressive brain cancer, and Macchiarini was a steady support. ‌ She said: 'He was an amazing friend to me during that time, and a solid, reliable pillar of strength. 'He spent hours listening to me talk about it all and offering gentle advice.' ‌ By June 2013, the pair were in a relationship and on Christmas Day that year, Macchiarini proposed. Alexander happily accepted. Shortly after, he told her he had to leave for an 'emergency VIP surgery' and claimed he was part of a secret circle of elite doctors treating figures like Bill and Hillary Clinton, Emperor Akihito of Japan, and President Obama, according to Vanity Fair. ‌ Then, throughout 2014, Macchiarini teased extravagant nuptials, including a Catholic ceremony officiated by Pope Francis at the Vatican's summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, a four-day celebration, and performances by Andrea Bocelli and John Legend. Alexander welcomed Macchiarini's offer to surprise her with an Italian wedding. She said: 'All I had to do was buy the dress.' ‌ But in May 2015, the truth unravelled. Just as Alexander planned to move to Europe and quit her job, she received an email from a friend titled 'The Pope.' It linked to an article revealing Pope Francis would be in South America on their supposed wedding day. She said: 'I demanded an explanation from Paolo. He claimed Vatican politics had interfered with the plans.' But when she contacted the Italian castle where the wedding was allegedly booked, 'nobody there knew Paolo's name.' ‌ She cancelled the wedding and hired a private investigator, who revealed Macchiarini was still married to his wife of 29 years — and living in Barcelona with another mistress and their two children. 'I just didn't want to put two and two together,' Alexander said. 'I didn't want Paolo to not be the man I believed him to be. I didn't want the fairy tale to end.' The Vatican confirmed Pope Francis never knew Macchiarini or promised to officiate the wedding. Bocelli's wife also denied his involvement. ‌ On what would have been their wedding weekend, Alexander, disguised in a blonde wig, and two friends confronted Macchiarini at his Barcelona home. A woman with two children emerged, confirming his deception. 'He was like an embarrassed schoolboy who had been caught,' friend Leigh McKenzie told Vanity Fair. Alexander watched silently from the car, marking the definitive end of their relationship. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
