US Man Weighing 151 Kg Sues Disney For Rs 42 Lakh After Waterslide Injury

NDTV2 days ago

A US man has sued Walt Disney for Rs 42.7 lakh ($50,000) in damages after he suffered injuries on a waterslide at the entertainment behemoth's amusement park. Eugene Strickland, who weighed 151 kg at the time, 13 kg above the ride's weight limit -- was on the Downhill Double Dipper at Disney's Blizzard Beach Waterpark in July 2021 when the incident took place.
As per the lawsuit filed last week, Mr Strickland has blamed the waterslide's design and "exhilarating speeds" for causing the injuries. It allegedly caused his inner tube to dislodge from beneath him and made him "land with force onto the hard plastic surface of the slide".
He said he "suffered serious bodily injury" which resulted in pain and suffering, disability, scarring, disfigurement, mental anguish and loss of capacity for the enjoyment of life.
The Florida resident argued that Walt Disney World displayed negligence and failed to maintain safe premises. He also claims that the theme park was aware of the "safety hazard" and "concealed trap" that led to his injuries.
"Our client was severely injured on a ride at Disney's Blizzard Beach. He has filed a lawsuit alleging that it was the defendant's lax safety measures and oversight that contributed to those injuries. We are pursuing justice for him and working to hold Disney accountable for their alleged negligence," his attorneys told People.
It remains unclear in the complaint if Mr Strickland was aware of the weight limit before entering the slide.
This is not the first instance when Walt Disney World has been sued. Last year, Jeffrey Piccolo filed a "wrongful death" lawsuit against Disney after his wife, Kanokporn Tangsuan, died when she suffered an allergic reaction from her meal at a restaurant at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.
However, Disney said Mr Piccolo signed away his right to take action against the company when he agreed to the terms and conditions of Disney+ during a free trial of the streaming service several years ago.

Gujarat Congress demands CBI investigation into MNREGA scam

Gandhinagar: The state unit of the Congress party has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the MNREGA scam in Gujarat. They alleged that minister Bachubhai Khabad, whose two sons were arrested for their involvement in the scam, is obstructing the investigation. Speaking to reporters in Gandhinagar, Amit Chavda, leader of the Congress Legislature Party, said that bills worth over Rs 3 crore were paid without any work being done under MNREGA on 12 land survey numbers belonging to Khabad's family. "We demand a CBI investigation into the scam. The minister has been obstructing the investigation in the case. Why has he not been removed from the cabinet?" Chavda questioned. Chavda said that despite the Congress submitting complaints with evidence of widespread MNREGA-related corruption, the govt has so far investigated cases only in Devgadh Baria and Dhanpur talukas. "A CBI probe will bring to the fore similar corruption cases in different districts," Chavda said.

Revenue official caught taking bribe; arrested

Lucknow: A land measurement officer posted in the consolidation department of Prayagraj was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 by the Uttar Pradesh Vigilance Establishment on Wednesday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to officials, a senior audit officer at the principal accountant general's office approached the department alleging illegal encroachment on his land by two locals, Dharmendra Kumar and Sanjay Kumar. Despite prior measurements ordered by consolidation authorities, one of the accused allegedly manipulated the process to submit a second report without notice, prompting the complainant to seek a fresh survey of his land. When the complainant visited the office on May 30, the assistant consolidation officer informed him that his request was forwarded to consolidation officer Harendra Singh. Upon meeting Singh, the complainant was allegedly told to pay Rs 10,000 to get the fresh land survey conducted with a "favourable report." This prompted the complainant to approach the vigilance department, which verified the allegations and set up a trap. On June 4, the vigilance team caught Harendra Singh red-handed while accepting ₹10,000 near Katra Police Outpost. He was arrested. The vigilance department has appealed to the public to report bribery or corruption by govt officials via helpline numbers 9454404859 (Prayagraj Sector) or 9454401866 (Headquarters).

Govt helps 214 children receive hearing implants

Lucknow: In 2024-25, the state govt assisted 214 hearing-impaired children to get cochlear implants under its surgical grant scheme. Under the scheme, Rs 10,000 is provided to differently-abled persons for 21 different kinds of surgeries and up to Rs 6 lakh for cochlear implants. "In 2024-25 alone, 214 hearing-impaired children received implants worth Rs 12.84 crore, which greatly enhanced their quality of life. The initiative is a vital step toward empowering divyangjans and promoting their self-reliance. Beyond financial aid, the scheme fosters social inclusion by enabling access to transformative procedures like cochlear implants and surgeries like corneal plasticity and post-polio correction," said a govt spokesperson. The department of empowerment of persons with disabilities is responsible for implementing the scheme. The department is working to identify eligible beneficiaries under the initiative, particularly those from economically weaker sections who cannot afford high-cost surgeries. Minister of state (independent) for backward classes welfare and divyangjan empowerment Narendra Kashyap said: "In the previous financial year, 214 children from 63 districts received cochlear implants. We are working towards expanding and strengthening the scheme so that more Divyangjans can benefit from it and ensure inclusive and equitable development in Uttar Pradesh."
