Former Alabama track champion Eliud Kipsang dies after cardiac arrest aged 28

CNN12-06-2025
Former NCAA track star Eliud Kipsang, who earned several first-team All-America honors as a runner, has died aged 28, according to Alabama Athletics.
Alabama Athletics released a statement Wednesday confirming that Kipsang had died on Tuesday evening.
'We are heartbroken by the passing of Eliud Kipsang, one of the most gifted athletes ever to wear crimson and white,' said Alabama Athletics' head coach Dan Waters.
'His impact on our program extended far beyond records and championships; he was a beloved teammate, a brother to so many and a dear friend to me, personally.
'On behalf of the entire Alabama family, we extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones. The running community has lost a remarkable soul.'
The university statement did not provide details of how Kipsang had died but a GoFundMe page set up to cover his funeral costs says he suffered a cardiac arrest on Friday.
The fundraising page says the 28-year-old was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, WA, where he spent the subsequent days in intensive care as doctors tried to save his life.
Kipsang broke three school records during his successful time with the Crimson Tide, where he was also named the 2021 SEC Runner of the Year.
The track star was born in Kenya before moving to Alabama for his first season in 2020, winning the SEC 1,500-meter title in his debut year. He then went on to win the individual SEC cross-country title.
During the 2022 season, Kipsang broke the collegiate record in the outdoor 1,500m, clocking a time of 3:33.74 – the mark still remains in the top five in collegiate history.
Kipsang still holds three Alabama Athletics records in the indoor mile, indoor distance medley relay and the outdoor 1,500m.
He also has six times that are still in the top-10 of Alabama track and field history.
In 2021, Kipsang also competed in the Kenya Olympic trials, before trialing for the World Championships the following year.

Top Nebraska high school team features 9 major commits

Top Nebraska high school team features 9 major commits originally appeared on The Sporting News The pressure for one Nebraska high school football team in 2025 is as big as any in the country. That is because they are not only the defending Class A state champions, they feature a roster loaded with Football Bowl Subdivision commits. MORE: Some of the top non-quarterbacks to play in Nebraska high school football this year Millard South overcame a Week 1 defeat last season to win 12 in a row, highlighted by a 27-10 victory over Westside for the state championship. They are led by Alabama commit Jett Thomalla at quarterback of a team that scored over 40 points in 10 straight at one point in 2024. Thomalla, though, is far from the only major Division I commit on the roster for first-year head coach Taylor Mendenhall. An assistant and alum of Millard South, Mendenhall replaces Ty Wisdom, who took over at Chandler High School in Arizona. Along with Thomalla, defensive back Dayton Gaius-Anyaegbu and offensive lineman Carter Glab have committed to Army-West Point, as Fresno State has received commitments from defensive lineman Solomon Baker and tight end Dallas Gaius-Anynegbu. Both Nelsyn Wheeler, a running back, and Landen Von Seggern, an offensive lineman, have committed to Illinois, as wide receiver Amarion Jackson will head to Iowa State next year. Another tight end, Isaac Jensen, has committed to Missouri. At the Football Championship Subdivision level, defensive back Toris Rudd Jr. is off to North Dakota while both offensive lineman Antonio Harris and running back Gabe Prucha have committed to Augustana at the NCAA Div. II level. Daxton Williams, a linebacker, has committed to Minnesota State-Mankato at the NCAA Div. II level with defensive back Eli Mitchell joining him at Northwest Missouri State. Thomalla threw 47 touchdown passes last year, as Jensen caught nine of them. Prucha had 17 rushing scores and Baker led the defense with eight sacks. Jensen averaged 66 yards receiving per game, with Jackson right behind him, as Prucha ran for over 80 per game. The 2025 season for Millard South starts with one of its toughest games of the season as they take on Arbor View on Friday, August 29. They also play Millard South, Kearney, Millard North, Lincoln Southeast, Papillion-La Vista, Lincoln High, North Platte and Omaha Benson this regular season. Judge allows 4 West Virginia football players fighting NCAA eligibility rules to compete

A federal judge on Wednesday allowed four football players to compete at West Virginia this season, the latest ruling in one of a long line of cases challenging the NCAA's eligibility rules. U.S. District Judge John Preston Bailey issued a preliminary injunction in a lawsuit filed by defensive lineman Jimmori Robinson, running back Tye Edwards, safety Justin Harrington and wide receiver Jeff Weimer. They were previously denied appeals to play, then challenged the NCAA's rule that sets a five-year limit for players to compete over four seasons. Each of the players attended junior colleges that weren't members of any NCAA divisions. They contended those years shouldn't have counted against the five-year limit. Eligibility cases involving more than two dozen college football players are playing out in courts nationwide. Wednesday's ruling comes two days after a federal court in California denied efforts to play this season by Southern Cal offensive lineman DJ Wingfield and UCLA wide receiver Kaedin Robinson. "The nationwide case law reveals a clear split," Bailey wrote. In acknowledging a lack of guidance from higher courts on the subject, Bailey said he aligned his ruling with those made in favor of separate appeals by Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, Rutgers safety Jett Elad and former Nevada wide receiver Cortez Braham Jr., now at Memphis. Bailey agreed with the rulings in each of those cases that determined the NCAA's eligibility rules were commercial in nature and therefore subject to antitrust scrutiny under the Sherman Act. Bailey made a similar ruling in late 2023 in favor of college basketball players who previously were denied the chance to play immediately after transferring a second time. That lawsuit had alleged the NCAA transfer rule's waiver process violated federal antitrust law. In some cases involving college football players where NCAA eligibility rules were upheld, "it is apparent, however, that those decisions were grounded in a pre-NIL world," Bailey wrote, citing name, image and likeness compensation deals that commenced in July 2021. "In the current era of NIL compensation, eligibility rules are commercial in nature," Bailey wrote. He added that athlete eligibility "is even more commercial now" following the so-called House settlement earlier this year that cleared the way for schools to start paying millions to their athletes. In a statement, NCAA spokeswoman Saquandra Heath said the ruling "erodes the academic standards that have for decades ensured student-athletes obtained an education." Heath also said that while the NCAA and its member schools are making changes to deliver more benefits to student-athletes, "the patchwork of state laws and differing court opinions are why partnering with Congress is essential to provide stability for all college athletes." Three U.S. House committees are considering Republican-led draft legislation to regulate college sports. At West Virginia, the four players have not participated in fall practices. Weimer is the only one not currently listed on the roster. Jimmori Robinson is the most accomplished. Last season at UTSA, he amassed 10 1/2 sacks and 17 tackles for loss as a linebacker and was named the American Athletic Conference's defensive player of the year. He would provide immediate help at a hybrid-linebacker position on a West Virginia defense that is undergoing a complete makeover under new coach Rich Rodriguez. There are still unanswered questions about Robinson's status. During arguments in court in Wheeling on Tuesday, an NCAA lawyer contended that Robinson had academic issues at UTSA, according to multiple reports. An attorney for Robinson said the defense team was aware of the academic situation but declined to be more specific in court. A West Virginia athletics spokesperson declined comment Wednesday both on Bailey's ruling and on Robinson's eligibility. ___ AP college football: and Sign up for the AP's college football newsletter:
