stress hormone
Stress isn't always loud. Sometimes, it shows up quietly—through puffy eyes, hair fall, or sudden skin changes. The body is smarter than it gets credit for; it keeps sending signals, especially when the
stress hormone
cortisol shoots up.
Cortisol is important—it keeps the body alert and awake. But when it stays high for too long, it starts doing more harm than good. What's often brushed off as 'just stress' may actually be the body screaming for attention. Here are 10 signs that could signal a persistently high level of cortisol.

Chronically
high cortisol levels
can lead to fluid retention, especially around the face and eyes. According to a 2013 study published in Endocrine Reviews,
cortisol
affects the body's salt-water balance, making the face appear swollen or rounded, especially in the mornings.
Thin skin and easy bruising
High cortisol levels can break down collagen, the protein that gives skin its strength. Over time, skin becomes fragile, thinner, and more prone to bruising even with minor knocks. This is common in people with Cushing's syndrome, a condition linked with cortisol excess.
Unexplained belly fat with thin arms and legs
Cortisol triggers fat storage around the abdomen, but at the same time, causes muscle breakdown in the limbs. That's why some people notice a disproportionate weight gain—fat around the belly but muscle loss in arms and legs. Research in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism confirms this pattern.
Dark patches or pigmentation around neck and armpits
Long-term cortisol spikes can interfere with insulin regulation, leading to a condition called acanthosis nigricans. These dark patches are a result of hormonal imbalance, not dirt.
Hair thinning at the crown or sudden hair loss
Cortisol disrupts the hair growth cycle, especially the anagen phase, causing hair to shed prematurely. Hair loss that begins subtly from the scalp crown area is often a red flag for hormonal disruption linked to cortisol.
Frequent skin breakouts, even in adulthood
Cortisol increases sebum production, which clogs pores and leads to breakouts. Worse, it slows healing, so pimples stay longer and leave deeper marks. A 2020 review in Experimental Dermatology also links cortisol surges with chronic inflammatory skin conditions like acne and eczema.
Visible red or purple stretch marks on the body
While weight gain plays a role, cortisol breaks down connective tissue, causing wide, reddish-purple striae—especially on the stomach, thighs, or underarms. These marks are usually deeper than normal stretch marks.
Unexplained facial hair growth in women
High cortisol can indirectly stimulate androgen (male hormone) production, especially in women, leading to excess hair growth on the chin, jawline, or upper lip—a condition also seen in PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), where cortisol plays a secondary role.
Red face or flushed skin without fever
When cortisol remains high, it can dilate blood vessels, making the face appear red or blotchy, especially under stress or embarrassment. Persistent flushing could indicate more than just momentary tension.
Elevated stress hormones linked to higher blood pressure risk
Tired-looking eyes with deepening crow's feet
Chronically elevated cortisol shortens telomeres (the protective ends of DNA), accelerating ageing. The first visible impact? Fine lines around the eyes, sunken appearance, and dark circles that don't go away even after rest.

Raped by uncle, 12-year-old gives birth: Baby and mother stable; Bombay HC had conditionally approved abortion

NAGPUR: A 12-year-old rape survivor gave birth to a baby boy at Akola GMCH last week. The minor, who had earlier moved the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court (HC) seeking its nod for the medical termination of her eight-month-old pregnancy and had obtained the court's conditional permission for the same, chose to deliver the child after a medical board constituted by the HC warned that an abortion would endanger her life. On June 17, a division bench of Justices Nitin Sambre and Sachin Deshmukh had granted conditional permission for the medical termination of pregnancy, based on undertakings from the minor and her parents. However, a court-appointed medical board later submitted that proceeding with an abortion could be life-threatening for the minor. On June 18, the minor underwent a safe delivery. Both she and the baby, weighing 980g, are stable and are expected to be discharged soon. Advocate Soniya Gajbhiye, representing the minor and her family, said they would now approach the HC again seeking directions on custody and future care of the newborn. "The minor is herself dependent on her parents and incapable of caring for the baby. The accused, her uncle, is currently in judicial custody," Gajbhiye said. HC, in its judgment, had highlighted important constitutional principles on reproductive rights, referring to Supreme Court precedents. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dieser Nagelpilz-Mini-Laser sorgt für Aufregung (Experten sind begeistert) Apotheken Aktuell Undo The bench observed that the physical and psychological trauma of forced pregnancy, especially arising from sexual assault, violates a woman's dignity and autonomy under Article 21 of the Constitution. "The right to bodily autonomy rests with the woman alone, irrespective of her age or marital status. No authority, including the State, can compel her to carry an unwanted pregnancy. Such coercion would strip her of the right to decide the immediate and long-term course of her life," HC had ruled, while accepting this constitutional principle had to be balanced with expert medical advice in the present case.

Is it just aches—or arthritis? 8 early signs you shouldn't ignore

Arthritis is not only for the elderly. Most types of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis, start early in life and develop unnoticed. Too often, early signs are dismissed as "just tiredness" or "normal aging." This delay can result in irreversible joint damage, disability, and a drastic decline in quality of life. So, let's discuss about the 8 early signs and symptoms of arthritis that you should never ignore. If you or your known experiences any of these, get yourself visited by a doctor—ideally a rheumatologist—at the earliest. 1. Joint pain that lasts Everyone has joint pain from time to time, particularly after use or an injury. But if you find constant pain in joints such as the knees, fingers, wrists, or ankles—even when you're not physically active—it might be an early warning sign of arthritis. Such pain begins slowly and may go away and then return, but it becomes more regular over time. 2. Stiffness, particularly in the morning Do your joints lock or feel stiff when you get up in the morning? Does it take over 30 minutes to "warm up" and get going? Morning stiffness lasting over half an hour is a typical early sign of inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Travel-Ready Steaming with Philips Steamer Philips Garment Steamers Learn More Undo 3. Swelling in joints Puffiness or swelling visible on the surface around a joint, particularly of the hands, knees, or feet, is an alert. Swelling in arthritis is usually secondary to inflammation of the lining of the joint. It tends to be warm and may be tender or even painful. 4. Decreased range of motion Have you realized that you cannot move your joints as you used to? For instance, if you are having trouble bending your knees fully or closing your fist tightly, it may be due to inflammation limiting your joint movement. Reduced range of motion is an initial indicator of joint damage that may progress if not treated. 5. Fatigue and weakness Most forms of arthritis, particularly autoimmune forms such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, produce overall tiredness, fatigue, and weakness in the muscles. This is not a matter of being tired after work—this is a pervasive feeling of tiredness that is not relieved by rest. 6. Redness and warmth around joints Inflammation may also result in the skin over the joint becoming warm and reddish. This may be confused with an allergy or infection of the skin, but if it is found near a joint and is accompanied by pain or stiffness, then arthritis may be the cause. 7. Numbness or tingling sensation Inflammation in joints in the hands and wrists may compress nerves near them, causing tingling, numbness, or a pins-and-needles sensation. This is particularly frequent in rheumatoid arthritis, where hand joints become involved early. 8. Unexplained weight loss or fever At times, particularly in autoimmune types of arthritis, individuals may develop low-grade fever, loss of appetite, or unintentional weight loss. These general symptoms arise as a result of ongoing inflammation within the body and usually are ignored until joint pain is extreme. Why early diagnosis is important Diagnosis of arthritis at its initial stage is important. Early detection enables: Early treatment, which has the potential to delay or even stop joint destruction. Improved quality of life, decreased pain and enhanced functioning. Prevention of long-term complications, i.e., deformity of the joints and disability. Most forms of arthritis can be controlled well if identified early. The treatment involves medications, physiotherapy, lifestyle modification, and in some, surgery. But it is the early identification and timely action that holds the key. If you or someone you know is having recurring joint ache, morning stiffness, swelling, or any one of the signs mentioned above, don't hesitate. See a doctor. Take a test. Begin treatment at an early stage. Your joints are the foundation of your body—care for them before it is too late.
