Mothers carry heavy load to ensure children's success, says Nancy Shukri
KOTA KINABALU: Mothers today carry an increasingly heavy burden to ensure their children's success amid daily pressures and the rising cost of living, says Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
The Women, Family and Community Development Minister said young mothers today must deal with work and family pressures, financial constraints, a lack of personal time, and the burden of responsibility for their children's education.

"Mothers must also be more cautious and balanced, especially when guiding their children on the use of technology," she reminded in a statement issued on Sunday (May 11) in conjunction with the national-level Mother's Day Celebration for 2025.
Nancy said in light of the current challenges, the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry has introduced the National Women's Policy 2025-2030, themed "Empowering Women, Strengthening the Nation", to support women and mothers across all segments of society in the country.

She said the policy outlines various initiatives, such as the Kasih Ibu Tunggal programme, a skills incubator for single mothers, MamaCare, the Wanita Bangkit programme, the Two Years Exit programme, Gig@bit, and Volvo Iron Women.
Earlier, Nancy attended the 2025 national-level Mother's Day Celebration, themed "Sentuhan Kasih Ibu", held at the Sabah International Convention Centre here.
The event, organised by the ministry through the National Population and Family Development Board, was officiated by the wife of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sabah, Toh Puan Faridah Tussin. The Sabah Chief Minister's wife, Datin Seri Juliah Salag, also attended the event.

According to the statement, the 2025 "Anugerah Ibu Inspirasi (Inspirational Mother Award)" was presented to Kasmirah Jaafar, a seamstress from Bekok, Johor, who has spent over half of her life in Sabah.
The award recognises Kasmirah's struggles and sacrifices as a single mother raising five children who became teachers, doctors, and engineers.
This year's Mother's Day celebration also introduced the "Ikon Ibu Muda (Young Mother Icon)" award, which was presented to celebrity Bella Astillah, whose real name is Dayang Ara Nabellah Awang Astillah.
The award honours the "Bella Spirit", recognising the young mother's resilience in using her talents to rise above a challenging past and raise her children with love and care. - Bernama

AI transforms journalism, ethics must guide the future
KUALA LUMPUR: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has entered the newsroom, transforming how journalists work while raising serious questions about ethics, accuracy and trust. According to Malaysian Press Institute president Datuk Yong Soo Heong (pic), these have been the ethical crossroads confronting today's media landscape. "Falsehoods are costly. Journalistic integrity demands rigorous fact-checking and transparency. "Trust is a journalist's currency and those who mislead readers will inevitably face serious repercussions,' he told Bernama recently. Yong acknowledged the undeniable benefits of AI in boosting newsroom productivity, but stressed that the core values of journalism — the truth, accountability and human judgement — must never be compromised. He also expressed concerns over the increasing reliance on AI-generated content and the alarming rise of deepfakes, warning that if left unchecked, these trends could severely erode public trust in the media. Yong noted that AI had transformed newsroom operations, enabling faster editing, personalised content delivery and more efficient workflows, especially among younger journalists who preferred AI-generated summaries over traditional face-to-face interviews. "Context, tone and human expression are irreplaceable. Only direct engagement captures the nuances that make a story resonate,' he emphasised. He warned that AI-generated visuals had become a new frontier of misinformation, citing several recent incidents in Malaysia and the region involving misleading or doctored imagery. These developments, Yong said, underscore the urgent need for rigorous verification protocols before publishing any content created or enhanced by AI. He emphasised that AI should be seen as a tool for empowerment, not a replacement for human creativity. Echoing these sentiments, Prof Dr Manjit Singh Sidhu, an expert from the College of Computing and Informatics at Universiti Tenaga Nasional, observed that Malaysian media organisations had been integrating AI at varying speeds, depending on their readiness and strategic focus. He said journalists who embraced change and learned to work with AI would not only survive the evolving landscape but also shape the future of trustworthy, meaningful journalism. He suggested news organisations develop and adhere to strict ethical frameworks when using AI, ensuring transparency in how the technology is applied throughout news production. To deepen media practitioners' knowledge of AI technology, Bernama has coordinated five AI training sessions, one each in Kuala Lumpur, Cyberjaya, Sarawak, Sabah and the East Coast. Meanwhile, recognising the rapid pace of AI advancement, including in journalism, this year's National Journalist Day (Hawana) celebration adopted the theme Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics. When announcing the theme on Tuesday, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the rise of AI had rapidly transformed the gathering, processing and dissemination of information, but emphasised that it must not come at the expense of journalistic ethics. The Hawana 2025 celebration will be held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur from June 13 to 15, with the highlight, its opening on June 14, scheduled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Sabah Secretaries Association celebrates golden jubilee, emphasizes AI readiness

According to SAS President Datin Belinda Brigid Banding, one of the activities planned is the presentation of donations to selected charitable organizations by the wife of the Sabah Head of State, Toh Puan Faridah Tussin, who is also the association's patron. 'In conjunction with the association's 50th anniversary, various activities will be held, including donations to selected welfare bodies. The highlight of the celebration will be a gala dinner to mark SAS's 50th anniversary, where Toh Puan will be the guest of honor,' she told the media after paying a courtesy visit to Faridah at Istana Seri Kinabalu. Belinda explained that the visit aimed to introduce SAS's committee members to Faridah and brief her on the association's upcoming activities. She said SAS is a collective of secretaries serving in federal, state, and private sectors in Sabah. 'Initially, this association had only 63 members, but over the years, membership has grown, and SAS now has over 100 registered members.' 'The purpose of establishing this association is to unite secretaries across Sabah while helping members enhance their skills and knowledge to improve the quality of their services.' 'We also welcome all secretaries in Sabah to join the association, regardless of age,' she said. Additionally, Belinda urged all secretaries to equip themselves with knowledge and skills to face advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. 'The use of AI in the secretarial field is beneficial, but they should not rely entirely on it. 'They must understand and always double-check their work to ensure higher-quality output,' she added.

KPWKM's 2025 Kembara Kasih Roadshow reaches over 10,000 Sabahans across six districts

The outreach programme, which began in Tuaran on May 16, successfully reached and benefitted over 10,000 residents. Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the initiative brought together 34 programmes and services that were delivered at various roadshow stops, offering direct assistance to communities in need. 'Kembara Kasih also included visits to 14 clients under the Social Welfare Department (JKM) and several families identified by the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) along the route,' she said. 'We hope these visits help ease their burdens, offer encouragement, and inspire them to move forward and rebuild their lives.' To support women's professional development, the Zero Tolerance for Violence programme organised by the Department of Women's Development (JPW) was held at the Papar Community Hall and drew more than 700 participants.
