The Beach Boys Chart A Debut Rock Hit In America

Forbes30-06-2025
The Beach Boys debut on Billboard's Hot Rock Songs and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs charts with 'God ... More Only Knows,' which also holds at No. 2 on the Rock Digital Song Sales list. Clockwise from left, the Beach Boys are Al Jardine, Mike Love, Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, and Carl Wilson.
Since the beginning, the music of the Beach Boys has been classified as both pop and rock, depending on different sources and, of course, different songs. Because the group is made up of musicians playing instruments like guitar, bass, and drums, the outfit was originally labeled under the rock genre, but more recently, its output is often seen through the lens of pop.
When it comes to the Billboard charts, the primary pop rankings are focused on radio play, while there are other lists under the rock and alternative categories that center on streaming activity, sales, and general consumption. It's on those tallies where the group earns a special honor this week.
"God Only Knows" Debuts on Multiple Charts
"God Only Knows" debuts on a pair of Billboard rankings this frame. The tune opens at No. 17 on the Hot Rock Songs chart and No. 21 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs tally. Both of those lists are general consumption rosters, as they blend sales, streams, and airplay to showcase what titles in those styles Americans are listening to.
A First Rock Hit for the Beach Boys
While the Beach Boys have been called a rock band for many years, at least in some circles, "God Only Knows" earns the group its first hit on both the Hot Rock Songs and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs charts. Those tallies didn't exist until long after the Beach Boys produced most of the biggest hits in the group's catalog. It's only now, after the passing of the mastermind behind the outfit, Brian Wilson, that the musicians land a debut placement on these rankings.
'Good Vibrations,' "Sloop John B" and "I Get Around" Sell Well
The Beach Boys fare much better on another style-specific ranking, the Rock Digital Song Sales chart. On that tally, "God Only Knows" keeps at its No. 2 high point. At the same time, "Good Vibrations" and "Sloop John B" rise to new peaks after debuting just last frame. Those beloved cuts lift to Nos. 4 and 9, respectively. "I Get Around" earns the group a fifth career placement, as it opens at No. 8.

John Stamos Replaces Ailing Josh Gad As King Herod In ‘Jesus Christ Superstar' At The Hollywood Bowl

John Stamos is sliding into the golden slippers of King Herod just hours before the curtain comes up on Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl. Stamos' last minute casting comes after Josh Gad announced yesterday that he would no longer occupy the throne on Friday night. More from Deadline Josh Gad Drops Out Of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' Hollywood Bowl Concert Due To Covid Cynthia Erivo Cast As Jesus In 'Jesus Christ Superstar' At The Hollywood Bowl Josh Gad & Andrew Rannells To Star In 'Stay Tuned' Comedy Series Based On John Ritter Movie In Works At Hulu 'It is with enormous heartbreak that I inform you all that unfortunately, I have contracted a virus known as COVID (remember that little bastard from season one of 'Earth really sucks right now'?)' Gad wrote in on Instagram. Stamos is not just a pretty face. Beyond his acting chops, he's been a musician for decades, most famously playing with the Beach Boys on a regular basis. He also participated in the Broadway revival of Bye Bye Birdie and played Corny Collins in Hairspray at the Bowl in 2011. 'I am grateful for the chance to step into the gold lamé,' wrote Stamos on Instagram. 'This is an honor. A dream. And also a little insane because… I just stepped off a plane from @thebeachboys tour in Spain and have less than 24 hours to pull this off.' King Herod was played by Paul Ainsley in the original 1971 Broadway production and by Josh Mostel in the 1973 film. Alice Cooper rocked the part in NBC's 2018 live concert version of the musical. For this weekend's Bowl show, Cynthia Erivo was cast in the eponymous biblical role back in February, when the staging of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's musical was announced, running Aug. 1-3. Adam Lambert was later cast as Judas, with Milo Manheim and Raúl Esparza also joining the cast as Peter and Pontius Pilate. Phillipa Soo will play Mary Magdalene. Directed and choreographed by Tony winner Trujillo, the Hollywood Bowl's Jesus Christ Superstar will be conducted and music-directed by Stephen Oremus (who worked on both the Broadway and film versions of Wicked). The show is being produced in association with Neil Meron and Robert Greenblatt. 10 Best Fake Songs From Fake Movie Bands

This summer has seen some pretty catchy needle drops in movies, from Superman's Mighty Crabjoys to KPop Demon Hunters flash mob fandoms for Huntr/x and the Saja Boys. The latter Netflix release has reached not only Billboard music charts but also become the most streamed animated feature ever. With that in mind, we look back at our favorite fake bands' best songs of the past 30 years. While half the list includes incredible recent music from hit movies, the other half (and our number one slot) nod at the songs that really propelled this particular niche in movies—think A Goofy Movie. So, if you notice some of your favorites missing, simmer down because we excluded musicals and kept to genre movies that had original songs featured in them. Like Superman, we can't help but think this song is for the cool kids. No matter how hard we tried, we could not get 'Try Everything' out of our heads, and Gazelle (voiced by Shakira) might be back in Zootopia 2. Finally, the full single from Freaky Friday has been released for Freakier Friday sung by Pink Slip's in-universe lead singer Christina Vidal Mitchell. Josie and the Pussycats was such an underrated gem when it came out but was formative for millennials. We know there are so many songs, and it was hard to narrow it to one, so we went with 'Three Small Words' (featuring Kay Hanley as the voice of lead singer Josie), which encompasses the moment in time this movie embodies for a generation. Sammie (Miles Caton) in the Sinners universe went on to become a blues legend, but the night that changed his life was when he first performed 'I Lied to You.' The scene is hands down one of Ryan Coogler's masterpieces, and the music sizzles off the celluloid fever dream… just watch. It took a few years, but the Envy Adams (Brie Larson) on-screen performance of the Clash at Demonhead's 'Black Sheep' was finally released on Spotify and other platforms to enjoy. We love Metric's version, but the angst in the movie version is top tier. The Billie Eilish and Finneas-produced songs from Pixar's Turning Red are all so good. This one was also hard to narrow down, but the chorus of 'Nobody Like U' is never not on my mind. The KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack also has too many killer songs from each band to pick from. While I particularly love 'Soda Pop,' we have to give the Saja Boys props for 'Your Idol' for charting on Billboard. In 'Golden,' we get lyricist Ejae's heart and soul shining through. The powerful anthem is coming for 'Let It Go''s crown in replayability among young animation fans. Powerline is the blueprint, the O.G. of modern fake music pop stars thanks to A Goofy Movie. Vocalist Tevin Campbell made an icon so scene-stealing we're still waiting for a full Powerline album 30 years later… or at least a sequel with more fake music to dance to. Want more io9 news? Lynyrd Skynyrd Soars Thanks To ‘Happy Gilmore 2'

More than two decades after it first hit theaters, Happy Gilmore is back, only the second installment in what has now become a franchise isn't on the big screen. Happy Gilmore 2 arrived on Netflix on July 25. The film quickly became a top 10 success on the platform, and the movie is so popular that even a few music syncs have helped a handful of classic rock acts surge on streaming sites. Lynyrd Skynyrd Scores a Streaming Surge Of all the musical acts featured in Happy Gilmore 2, the one that stands out thanks to an impressive streaming boost is Lynyrd Skynyrd. The band's 1973 cut 'Tuesday's Gone' returns in the new film, which some fans of the original may have expected, as it was featured in Happy Gilmore. The rock group's ballad jumped 44% in terms of total on-demand streams in the United States during the movie's opening weekend, according to Billboard. The track soared from 525,000 streams to 756,000 between July 25 and 28, according to numbers shared with the music magazine by Luminate. Lynyrd Skynyrd's Deep Cut Finds a New Audience Though it never charted upon its initial release, 'Tuesday's Gone' has become a fan favorite among those who love Lynyrd Skynyrd. Originally featured on the band's debut album Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd, the song stands apart from the outfit's better-known, uptempo tracks like 'Sweet Home Alabama' and 'What's Your Name?' Though the tune doesn't appear on any Billboard lists this frame, a growth of more than 40% on streaming outlets is impressive for a decades-old cut. Foreigner and Tom Petty Also Gain Ground Lynyrd Skynyrd might be leading the way, but the rockers aren't the only ones benefiting thanks to being included in Happy Gilmore 2. The Replacements' track 'Swingin' Party' experienced the biggest percentage gain, more than doubling its plays from 15,000 to 38,000 streams. Foreigner's 'Juke Box Hero' enjoyed an 18% bump in streaming during the same window, while Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' 'The Waiting' rose by 15%.
