Op Sindoor success to feature in I-Day event
NEW DELHI: The success of Operation Sindoor will be hailed at the Independence Day celebrations at Red Fort on Friday, three months after Indian forces hit terror and military targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Police personnel during the full dress rehearsal for the 79th Independence Day Parade 2025, at Gandhi Maidan in Patna on Wednesday. (ANI PHOTO) A Mi-17 helicopter will troop a flag depicting Operation Sindoor, the invitation cards carry the operation's distinct logo, the view cutter at Gyanpath will showcase the logo, and the floral decoration will be based on the operation, the defence ministry said on Wednesday. 'The invitation cards are also carrying the watermark of Chenab bridge, depicting the rise of 'Naya Bharat,'' the defence ministry said in a statement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the celebrations at the 79th Independence Day, and address the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort. He is expected to talk about the operation in his speech. 'As the nation is making giant strides towards realising the government's vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, the theme of this year's celebrations is Naya Bharat. The celebrations will serve as a platform to commemorate the continuing rise of a prosperous, secure and bold Naya Bharat and provide renewed power to surge further ahead on the path to progress,' the ministry said. The success of Operation Sindoor is being hailed at a time when the government has made it clear that strikes against terror mark a new normal for India. India launched the operation in the early hours of May 7 and struck terror and military installations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) following the April 22 Pahalgam terror strike. Between the launch of the operation in the early hours of May 7 and the ceasefire on May 10 evening, Indian forces bombed nine terror camps in Pakistan and PoK, killing at least 100 terrorists, and the Indian Air Force struck targets at 13 Pakistani airbases and military installations. The operation was recently discussed in Parliament too. Lieutenant Colonel Harsh Gupta and Havildar Surinder Singh designed the logo of Operation Sindoor. The PM will be greeted by defence minister Rajnath Singh, minister of state for defence Sanjay Seth, defence secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, chief of defence staff General Anil Chauhan, army chief General Upendra Dwivedi, navy chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi and IAF chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh. The defence secretary will introduce the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Delhi Area, Lieutenant General Bhavnish Kumar to the PM. The GOC will then conduct the PM to the saluting base where a combined inter-services and Delhi Police guard will present a general salute to Modi, who will inspect the Guard of Honour. Flying Officer Rashika Sharma will assist the PM in hoisting the national flag, the statement said. It will be synchronised with a 21-Gun salute by the gunners of the 1721 Field Battery (Ceremonial). The Air Force band, consisting of one junior commissioned officer and 25 other ranks, will play the national anthem during the hoisting of the flag. For the first time, 11 Agniveer Vayu musicians will be part of the band, it said. 'As soon as the national flag is hoisted by the PM, flower petals will be showered at the venue by two Mi-17 helicopters of the Indian Air Force --- one trooping the national flag and the other a flag depicting 'Operation Sindoor'.' Around 5,000 special guests will witness the celebrations at Red Fort, including the Indian contingent of Special Olympics 2025, winners of international sports events, gold medallists of Khelo India Para Games, best performing farmers trained and financially assisted under different schemes, best performing sarpanches and best performing students among others. Over 1,500 people from various states and Union Territories dressed in traditional attire have also been invited to witness the ceremony.

Barasat metro to cross airport hurdle with tunnel-borer help
Kolkata: The Airport-Barasat metro corridor or the Yellow Line, which faced multiple hurdles beyond the airport, is poised for a major head start as Metro Railway is changing the alignment and deciding to use tunnel-boring machines (TBMs) between Michael Nagar and Barasat. This will enable it to not only avoid use of tall cranes that the airport authorities had objected to citing flight safety, it will also help the line negotiate the tricky stretch between New Barrackpore and Barasat where encroachment is a major challenge. Earlier, the tunnel section between the airport and New Barrackpore was supposed to be constructed using the cut-and-cover method, while the rest was supposed to be elevated. If the proposal gets the railways ministry's nod, the length of the Noapara-Basarat corridor will double from 18 km to 22 km and feature three additional stations beyond Barasat. Metro Railway has engaged railway consultancy firm RITES for a feasibility study on the Airport-Barasat section's alignment revision so that the twin tunnels can be executed by deploying non-invasive TBMs. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata | Gold Rates Today in Kolkata | Silver Rates Today in Kolkata The development comes a week before PM Narendra Modi's likely inauguration of the first phase of the Yellow Line from Noapara to the airport. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Al-meranah Eastern: Unsold Sofas Prices May Surprise You (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo When that happens, the city will get its first airport metro connectivity. However, beyond the airport, the Yellow Line construction has been a major challenge as Metro Railway opted for the cut-and-cover technique to build the twin tunnels. In the absence of TBMs, the construction would involve excavating a trench to build the tunnel structure and then filling it. "The technique is useful when the depth is relatively shallow and surface disruption is permissible," said a source. "All the above issues plaguing the Yellow Line are ready to be resolved. RITES has started the feasibility study for a longer Yellow Line with eight more stations. Once the proposal gets the final approval from the ministry, the 18km Noapara-Barasat corridor will span 22 km, with nine stations in the 12km Michael Nagar-Barasat section alone," the source said. Barasat Municipality chairman Ashani Mukherjee said: "Topographical survey and geo-technical investigations are ongoing in the Madhyamgram and Barasat municipal areas for further extension of the Yellow Line and revision of construction methodology in the Michael Nagar-Barasat section. At the behest of CM Mamata Banerjee, Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar broached the issue in Lok Sabha. Finally, there is light at the end of the tunnel. " According to the new alignment, the 11.9km Michael Nagar-Barasat underground route will run parallel to Jessore Road below some low-rise buildings, Vidyasagar Stadium, Kachhari Maidan, Barasat DM's office, and the Barasat EMU car shed-cum-maintenance depot at Jaypur. The stations will include Michael Nagar, Bidhanpally, Madhyamgram, Hridaypur, Vidyasagar Stadium, Barasat, Uttar Seethi, Jaypur, and Suripukur. Beijing doors ajar for trade package delivery
New Delhi | Mumbai: India and China may commence discussions shortly on a trade package covering supplies of critical rare earth magnets , fertilisers and pharmaceuticals, said people with knowledge of the matter. This would signal a thaw in relations with the neighbour amid heightening tensions with the US and the clamour from Indian industry to expedite imports of essential inputs from China. Consultations between representatives of the two countries are likely to take place later this month, around the time of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, scheduled to be held in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1, the people said. 'The top three items on the agenda for discussion are rare earth magnets, fertilisers and pharmaceuticals,' a senior official told ET. While outreach has begun, supplies of rare earth magnets and all fertilisers are yet to resume from China. India mandates government approval for investment by countries that have a border with it, a measure specifically aimed at its northern neighbour. That's against the backdrop of an escalation in tensions over the past five years, including border skirmishes and China's support for Pakistan. China announced export controls on medium and heavy rare earth-related items on April 4, with a view to 'safeguarding national security' in response to US President Donald Trump's tariffs, citing end-use norms. Possible talks with Beijing assume significance in light of the 50% tariff that Trump has imposed on Indian exports. The US has deferred tariffs on China by 90 days. Rare earth magnets are essential for a wide range of products, but especially for electric vehicles. While China has resumed shipments of rare earth magnets to companies in the US, Europe and Southeast Asia, export licences are yet to be issued to vendors supplying to India. 'Individual clearances for importing these items have not come so far,' said one of the persons. 'Negotiations will now start between the two countries for a trade package.' Beijing had also halted shipments of urea and some other fertilisers to India in the last three months. It has begun the process of easing restrictions on supplies of just urea to the country. 'Tenders for import of urea from China have been floated,' said a top executive of a fertiliser company. This indicates China is agreeable to sending some amount of the fertiliser to India. State trading enterprises, which import urea from China on behalf of the Indian government, have started floating tenders for the import of a limited quantity of the crop nutrient. While there is no talk about specialty fertilisers, discussions are likely going ahead, people aware of developments said. China had also stopped shipments of specialty fertilisers such as calcium nitrate and mono ammonium phosphate. India imports about 80% of these chemicals from China. A global supplier of agricultural inputs, Beijing has, however, been exporting them to other countries. LOOKING AHEAD Meanwhile, both India and China are concerned about the looming trade imbalance in pharmaceuticals. Trump's proposed tariff on finished drugs — 250% over the next one and a half years — stands to disrupt the industry in both countries. The commerce ministry has called for a meeting ahead of the SCO summit with top representatives from the pharmaceutical industry to discuss, among other issues, ways to collaborate and strengthen ties with China as part of broader cooperation. Industry watchers told ET the contours of the discussions have not been disclosed yet, but these may include mitigation plans against the backdrop of US tariffs. 'While pharmaceutical exports from India have been thus far exempt from the 50% US tariffs, future risks cannot be ruled out,' an industry expert told ET.
