Future appears bleak for Snowden Elementary School due to multiple factors
While there is no guarantee the school will be shut down, the future of the school appears grim. Beaufort County Schools Superintendent Dr. Matthew Cheeseman said there are three main factors that led to his decision to bring this to the board.
They said the school is impacting the district in a negative way financially, the enrollment numbers are dropping and the possibility of a better education elsewhere in the district exists.
Over the past decade, the board has seen signs of academic improvement at Snowden, Dr. Cheeseman said a familiar problem may have become too much to handle.
'Actually, I consider the quality of education, whether we can actually staff a school with certified and licensed public school educators and administrators and that has been a historical issue, at Snowden,' Dr. Cheeseman said.
He said the location and the enrollment play a large part in the lack of consistency as it pertains to teachers and he's worried about the impacts that could have on students.
'The issue is how do you have consistency among the educators in the building? You know, you can't go long without a math teacher or an officer, an English teacher, and not expect students to have achievement gaps,' he said.
In his proposal, Dr. Cheeseman said the students at Snowden would attend Chocowinity Primary School and Chocowinity Middle School in the fall of 2026.
He elaborated on what a closure would mean for the staff. 'We would look at the available positions that we have open in the district and who is licensed and certified and qualified to slide into those positions. Some of it will come down to contract law,' Dr. Cheeseman said.
Dr. Cheeseman said they plan to have public input and information sessions.

A settler accused of killing a Palestinian activist is to be freed. Israel still holds the body
TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — An Israeli settler accused of killing a prominent Palestinian activist during a confrontation captured on video in the occupied West Bank will be released from house arrest, an Israeli court ruled Friday. The video shot by a Palestinian witness shows Yinon Levi brandishing a pistol and tussling with a group of unarmed Palestinians. He can be seen firing two shots, but the video does not show where the bullets hit. Witnesses said one of the shots killed Awdah Hathaleen, an English teacher and father of three, who was uninvolved and was standing nearby. The Israeli military is still holding Hathaleen's body and says it will only be returned if the family agrees to bury him in a nearby city. It said the measure was being taken to 'prevent public disorder.' The confrontation occurred on Monday in the village of Umm al-Khair, in an area of the West Bank featured in 'No Other Land,' an Oscar-winning documentary about settler violence and life under Israeli military rule. In a court decision obtained by The Associated Press, Judge Havi Toker wrote that there was 'no dispute' that Levi shot his gun in the village that day, but she said he may have been acting in self-defense and that the court could not establish that the shots killed Hathaleen. Israel's military and police did not respond to a request for comment on whether anyone else may have fired shots that day. Multiple calls placed to Levi and his lawyer have not been answered. The judge said Levi did not pose such a danger as to justify his continued house arrest but barred him from contact with the villagers for a month. Levi has been sanctioned by the United States and other Western countries over allegations of past violence toward Palestinians. President Donald Trump lifted the U.S. sanctions on Levi and other radical settlers shortly after returning to office. A total of 18 Palestinians from the village were arrested after the incident. Six remain in detention. Eitay Mack, an Israeli lawyer who has lobbied for sanctions against radical settlers, including Levi, said the court ruling did not come as a surprise. 'Automatically, Palestinian victims are considered suspects, while Jewish suspects are considered victims,' he said. Levi helped establish an settler outpost near Umm al-Khair that anti-settlement activists say is a bastion for violent settlers who have displaced hundreds since the start of the Israel-Hamas war. Palestinians and rights groups have long accused Israeli authorities of turning a blind eye to settler violence, which has surged since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war , along with attacks by Palestinians. In a 2024 interview, Levi said he was protecting his own land and denied using violence. Some 70 women in Umm al-Khair said they were beginning a hunger strike on Friday to call for Hathaleen's body to be returned and for the right of his family to bury him in the village. Israel's military said in a statement to the AP that it would return the body if the family agrees to bury him in the 'nearest authorized cemetery.' Hathaleen, 31, had written and spoke out against settler violence, and had helped produce the Oscar-winning film. Supporters have erected murals in his honor in Rome, held vigils in New York and have held signs bearing his name at anti-war protests in Tel Aviv. Error! Jamaal Bowman, Zohran Mamdani's pick for education, operated a radical NYC school without a license
Jamaal Bowman, the scandal-plagued former congressman and fire-safety enthusiast, is reportedly on the shortlist to become chancellor of New York City schools. If the socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the mayoral race later this year, analysts believe Bowman is likely to be tapped to oversee America's largest public-school system, with nearly a million students in more than 1,000 schools. But a new controversy, tracing back to his days as a school principal, should be enough to give pause: Bowman violated state education law. Prior to being elected to Congress, a position he held from 2021 to 2025, Bowman was the founder and principal of the Cornerstone Academy for Social Action, a public middle school in The Bronx. To legally serve as a public-school principal, 'an individual must hold a valid certificate authorizing such service,' according to the New York State Department of Education. State records indicate that Bowman was issued a School Building Leader Initial Certificate on Feb. 1, 2009, but Bowman allowed the certificate to expire on Jan. 31, 2014, and did not reestablish his certification until Dec. 16, 2015. In other words, for a period of nearly two years, Jamaal Bowman operated a public school without a license — a violation of New York law. Bowman ignored multiple requests for comment. This is hardly the first time Bowman has been in trouble for bending the rules. As we reported last year, Bowman appears to have plagiarized multiple passages of the Ed.D. dissertation. Before that, while serving in Congress, Bowman pulled a fire alarm as Democrats were attempting to delay a vote on a bill, resulting in an unnecessary evacuation. Initially, Bowman claimed to have pulled the fire alarm by accident, with his office distributing suggested 'talking points' to political allies, including a reference to Republicans as 'Nazis.' Bowman later admitted to falsely pulling the fire alarm and agreed to pay a fine and write a letter of apology to first responders. His record as principal at Cornerstone Academy was also checkered with controversy and failure. During his tenure, Bowman likened standardized testing to 'modern-day slavery' and caused outrage by commissioning a 'Wall of Honor' that featured portraits of black militants Mutulu Shakur and Assata Shakur, both of whom were convicted of murdering police officers. In his spare time, Bowman also wrote rambling, paranoid, and incoherent poems that promoted 9/11 conspiracy theories. Unfortunately, student outcomes at Cornerstone were no better than Bowman's poetry. In 2019, after a decade with Bowman as founder and president, only 26% of Cornerstone students were proficient in English and only 30% of students were proficient in math — hardly an academic success. Why, then, is Bowman being considered for New York City schools chancellor? Ideology. Bowman is a committed socialist, anti-Israel militant and left-wing racialist, who is ready and willing to turn public schools into centers for far-left political propaganda. For his supporters, the law-breaking, plagiarism and history of academic failure are a small price to pay. The ideology rules.

Orlando Bloom Spotted At Dinner With Angela Merkel
BERLIN—Just weeks after announcing his split with fiancée Katy Perry, English actor Orlando Bloom was photographed Friday dining with former German Chancellor Angela Merkel. 'Angela kept Orlando laughing all night—he couldn't keep his eyes off her!' said an insider source who spotted the pair sipping wine, slurping oysters, and splitting a decadent piece of chocolate layer cake at a Michelin-starred restaurant. 'Sure, maybe they're just friends, but they looked like they were getting pretty cozy to me. She's a huge fan of Pirates Of The Caribbean , and he's super into the German economy. Personally, I think it's a match made in heaven.' At press time, the celebrity gossip mill was sent into overdrive after Bloom was spotted dancing in the crowd at a reading to promote Merkel's memoir.
