The Sun30-06-2025
LENGGONG: Perak is making steady progress in its socioeconomic recovery following the pandemic, with significant improvements recorded under the Perak Sejahtera 2030 development plan, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.
Speaking at the third-year progress report presentation, Saarani highlighted that 108 out of 272 planned projects have been completed since the initiative's launch in June 2022.
Another 128 projects are underway, while 36 are in pre-implementation stages.
'The state government has identified 127 additional projects to be included in the Perak Sejahtera 2030 Dashboard for systematic monitoring,' he said.
The state is focusing on five key economic growth nodes while exploring new sectors such as the Blue, Green, and Care Economies to drive sustainable development.
Economic indicators reflect Perak's recovery, with the state shifting from a RM70 million deficit to a surplus of RM64 million in 2023, the highest in its history.
Unemployment has also declined to 3.9 per cent in 2024 from 4.7 per cent in 2021.
'The improved financial performance allows us to increase welfare allocations, ensuring better support for those in need,' Saarani added.
The progress is attributed to strong collaboration between state and federal governments in implementing people-centric initiatives.

IOI Corp upstream earnings strong amid CPO gains, says RHB

KUALA LUMPUR: IOI Corp Bhd's upstream earnings are expected to continue doing well on the back of elevated crude palm oil (CPO) prices, while the company is embarking on new ventures to diversify its income streams, said RHB Research. IOI achieved fresh fruit bunch (FFB) growth in the financial year 2025 (FY25) of 1.3 per cent year on year (YoY), below its original target of 3 per cent. While output saw a mini-peak in April, IOI expects production to pick up again in July, with a bigger peak in August-September. "For FY26, it expects FFB output growth of 3-5 per cent from better weather conditions. This is in line with our 4 per cent forecast," RHB Research said in a note. Featured Videos Meanwhile, the firm noted that IOI is excited about its 33 per cent stake in a new pulp and paper joint venture using oil palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) with Nextgreen Global (NGGB MK, NR) to produce renewable pulp and paper products in Pekan. RHB Research noted that the first phase of the plant (150,000 tonnes) should be operational by 2028, with a potential earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) contribution of about RM30 to RM50 million. It said IOI has also ventured into the coconut plantation business, planting some 3,500 ha of its peripheral landbank (target 4,600 ha) with coconut trees. "This is expected to bring in an EBIT of RM60 million to RM70 million based on current coconut prices and full maturity of trees. "Overall, we keep Buy on the stocks with a target price of RM4.30," it added.

Full house at PKNPk's 'Special Coffee Series' in Perak

KUALA LUMPUR: Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Perak (PKNPk) has drawn a full house with the 16th edition of its Special Coffee Series forum today. This underscores strong interest from businesses in understanding the expanded scope of the Sales and Service Tax (SST), it said. PKNPk said the forum provided an informal yet high-impact platform for direct engagement with officials. This allows participants to raise questions and gain guidance on issues such as sector-based exemptions, transitional arrangements and updated registration processes. PKNPk chief executive Datuk Redza Rafiq Abdul Razak said the session aims to go beyond tax compliance by encouraging clear, informed decision-making and building business resilience. "We don't want policies to exist in silos, detached from the realities on the ground. This is not just about tax compliance, but it's about helping businesses operate with clarity, make informed decisions and remain competitive," he said in a statement. Redza added that the initiative reflects PKNPk's role as a proactive enabler and connector between government institutions and the private sector. Held at Hotel Casuarina @ Meru, the session attracted nearly 300 participants, including entrepreneurs, manufacturers and industry players from across Perak. The event was co-organised with the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (Perak) and the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (Perak). The Special Coffee Series has become one of Perak's most trusted platforms for industry-government dialogue, with six sessions held in 2025 alone. It is part of the Perak Sejahtera 2030 plan under the investor-friendly programme, aimed at promoting transparency and a business-friendly policy environment. Participants responded positively to the open dialogue, with many appreciating the practical, real-time feedback, a shift from conventional, bureaucratic sessions. "In a fast-moving world, communication between government and industry needs to be faster, more open and more responsive. That's the very purpose of this series.

Menteri besar Saarani Mohamad lauded this as proof of Perak's capability in the durian export market. Saarani said Malaysia exported durians produced in Perak to more than 40 countries between 2017 and 2023, with 73% of the export value concentrated in China. 'In 2022, Malaysia's durian export value reached RM1.14 billion, including RM887 million to China. 'Demand for varieties such as Musang King, Black Thorn, D24, IOI, and premium kampung durians from Perak continues to rise,' Bernama reported him as saying at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Perak Durian Fest at Dataran Selama today. He said Malaysia's durian export value is expected to reach RM1.8 billion by 2030, with an annual growth rate of 20% to 25%. Saarani said Perak's current focus is on widening access to premium kampung durians through branding strategies, quality certification and digital marketing. 'Durians from Perak are also in demand in Singapore, Hong Kong, the US and Australia, with the price of kampung durians from Malaysia reaching RM29 per 600g and Musang King durians being sold for up to RM400 per 2.5kg.
