
Australia and New Zealand take aim at UK meat market
According to the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), it is carving out a premium niche in the UK market, and innovation is "propelling Australia ahead of other countries as a leading supply source".
Exports increased following the 2023 UK-Australia Free Trade Agreement, but Australian beef represents only around 1% of total UK consumption.
Austrade says "that small percentage is having an outsized impact on quality and choice".
With Irish herds declining and domestic UK production increasingly constrained, Australian suppliers are establishing themselves as a reliable premium alternative."
"The focus isn't on replacing British meat but complementing it, especially in high-value segments where consistency and quality rule premium prices".
But it may be over-the-top sustainability claims by the Australians that most annoy the exporters in Ireland, who have by far the biggest share of the 30% of UK red meat consumption filled by imports, and who proudly proclaim the carbon footprints of Ireland's pasture-based dairy and beef systems are among the lowest globally.
Austrade says its "red meat industry is racing towards net zero emissions, from regenerative farming to low carbon shipping methods that naturally age meat at sea". Experimental use of seaweed in cattle feed to reduce methane also gets a mention, but the 10,500 miles transport distance for meat to the UK is glossed over.
Not to be outdone, the New Zealand Trade and Enterprise agency says it can offer UK retailers premium quality, sustainable, and ethical produce all year round, from pasture-based agriculture with some of the lowest emissions intensities globally.
"Emissions per unit are often half those of equivalents produced in the UK or Europe", says the NZTE. It says the carbon footprint of New Zealand sheep meat is less than half of the UK average.
However, it is a journey of 11,500 miles to bring it to the UK. In its defence, the NZTE says shipping by sea adds relatively little to the emissions profile, because it is one of the most carbon-efficient methods ("certainly more so than by road").
"For UK retailers seeking to decarbonise with integrity, the route to net zero may well lie further afield than expected," claims the NZTE.
A New Zealand-UK free trade agreement also came into force in 2023.

Increase in High Court challenges a key barrier to timely completion of infrastructure
A 20 per cent increase in judicial review challenges this year has been identified as a key barrier to timely completion of big capital projects and housing . This assessment is made in a new report examining the sluggish delivery of critical infrastructure in the State. The document points to a culture of risk aversion and excessive caution within the public service at the expense of timely decisions on projects. Increased regulatory burdens (including examples of applications requiring 30,000 pages of information), slow appraisal processes and inconsistent planning decisions are also cited as drags on delivery. READ MORE Delivering the report on Tuesday, Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Jack Chambers said people are 'immensely frustrated' at the pace of delivery and how this drives up costs. The report, which identified 12 key barriers to development, said that despite record investment in capital projects, the time it takes to complete these projects has lengthened considerably. Mr Chambers said it is clear from the report that delays are imposing limitations on the State's growth and development. 'Our electricity and water systems are approaching crisis points in many parts of our country that, if not addressed, will limit our ability to build the homes that we need and indeed provide for any of the other infrastructure, social or economic, that we need . . . We simply must do better by removing the barriers.' A higher number of High Court judicial review cases is pinpointed, with evidence to show challenges to planning decisions have risen by a fifth this year compared to 2024. The Minister said: 'I am deeply concerned that judicial review is too often being used as a mechanism and a tactic to obstruct and delay. This distorts the intended purpose of judicial review from a remedy of last resort to a tactical tool to delay infrastructure development.' Saying Irish court processes were among the slowest in Europe, he argued the net effect is inordinately long delays and a significant spike in project costs. He said it was having a 'serious chilling effect' on the commencement of projects. Mr Chambers outlined the example of a judicial review challenge to the Greater Dublin Drainage Project in 2020, which necessitated the need for a revised planning application in July 2025. The project, aimed at dealing with waste water on the north side of the capital, will now not be completed until 2032, while the project development costs have doubled in the interim. The risk of judicial challenge has resulted in regulatory bodies carrying out more in-depth assessments of applications to mitigate risk. 'While this increased scrutiny may have some benefits, it appears to be coming at the expense of timely decisions,' he added. Over decades, he said, there has been a pattern of decentralising significant policy decisions to different agencies and regulatory bodies. This has slowed policies and decisions, he said. His department received 170 submissions from the public and other stakeholders. A final report and an action plan addressing the identified barriers will be published in the autumn.

Social media giant X fails in court challenge against Irish media regulator over Online Safety Code
Ireland's media regulator has successfully defended a High Court challenge from social media giant X over its new Online Safety Code. The judgment of Mr Justice Conleth Bradley was delivered on Tuesday in the judicial review taken by X, formerly Twitter, against Coimisiún na Meán over the code, which fully took effect last week. Both sides have been on a collision course over the Online Safety Code, which obliges major platforms based in Ireland like X, Meta, and TikTok to adopt safeguards to protect children online. Last week, Coimisiún na Meán wrote to X to express its concerns it had not adopted measures to verify the ages of users to allow them to watch pornography on the platform. It gave the Elon Musk-owned firm until last Friday to respond and it did so, with X saying it had adopted such age assurance measures in Ireland. The regulator said it would now assess if this was robust enough to adhere to the code. It follows similar laws coming into force in the UK at the same time, which Mr Musk has hit out at and claimed 'its purpose is suppression of the people'. Virtual private networks, or VPNs, which allow internet users to mask where they are browsing from, have surged in popularity in the past week as these new measures took effect. In Ireland, two VPN providers are in the top five most downloaded apps on the Apple store in the 'utilities' section this week. Advocates have said Coimisiún na Meán must be proactive in tackling the big tech firms to which the code applies, to prevent children being exposed to pornography, extreme violence, self-harm content, and cyberbullying. The High Court had previously heard X had accused Ireland's watchdog of 'regulatory overreach' in its approach to restrictions on certain video content. The company wanted the court to quash the commission's decision from last October to adopt certain sections of the Online Safety Code, which applies binding rules to video-sharing platforms headquartered in Ireland. Penalties for breaching the code could be as high as 10% of a company's turnover. The company had further asked the court to overturn Coimisiún na Meán's decision to apply the code to X. The regulator fully defended its position in the High Court, and said it had developed codes and practices for keeping people safe online in line with Irish and European legislation. Mr Justice Bradley, having considered the arguments, said he did not believe X was entitled to the reliefs it had sought. He said X had placed 'insufficient weight' on its argument that provisions of the code went further than what was required in transposing EU legislation. The judge also said sections of the code do 'not amount to an impermissible or inconsistent overreach' of the provisions of EU legislation, meaning Coimisiún na Meán had acted within its legislative powers. Mr Justice Bradley listed the case for mention on Thursday. In a statement, Coimisiún na Meán said: 'We welcome the court's judgment and will study it in full before commenting further."
