Nature Trail: BirdWatch Ireland calls on Government to do more to protect important seabirds
Ireland has on the one hand, commitments to rapidly develop offshore energy projects and, on the other hand, to protect 30% of its marine territory by 2030 for both marine and maritime biodiversity. Currently, just shy of 10% of Ireland's marine territory is subject to some form of protection, less than 2% of it specifically for the 24 species of breeding seabird that Ireland's marine territory supports.
BirdWatch Ireland uses a traffic light system to assess the conservation status of all wild birds on the island of Ireland. Of the 24 species of seabirds that breed in Ireland, 23 are currently either amber or red listed. Globally one third of seabirds are considered threatened and half of them are declining in population.
Ireland is hugely important for seabirds with up to three quarters of a million birds gathering at colonies every year to nest. The island is of internationally importance for breeding Manx Shearwater, Storm Petrel and Roseate Tern.
The new BirdWatch Ireland initiative features a map identifying the 73 most important areas for Ireland's seabirds. Of the 73 areas 24 are wholly marine and are important feeding grounds .Forty-nine of the 73 areas are coastal and 41 of them are already designated as Special Protection Areas (SPAs) for wild birds. The remaining eight currently undesignated breeding sites need to be considered for designation
BirdWatch is calling on the Irish government to designate all seabird important bird areas as Special Protection Areas (SPAs) for birds under the Birds Directive, to review existing SPA boundaries and revise them as appropriate, to develop management plans for all SPAs, and to develop bird sensitivity maps to inform strategic spatial planning of marine activities.

Birmingham Irish charity launches striking summer homelessness appeal
A LONGSTADING Irish charity which supports some of the most vulnerable people in Birmingham has launched a summer homelessness appeal. SIFA Fireside, a support service for people experiencing homelessness, is calling on the public not to forget those in need during the summer holidays. SIFA Fireside's latest advertising campaign launched this month 'It's an unfortunate truth that while the festive season often inspires acts of kindness towards vulnerable people, the same cannot always be said for the months when the weather is warmer, especially when we're in the middle of a heatwave,' a spokesperson for the charity said. The organisation has partnered with the Birmingham creative agency One Black Bear, to launch a compelling campaign for summer 2025 which is an extension of their 'Homelessness Doesn't Take a Holiday' fundraiser of 2023. 'During summer, many individuals tend to overlook the plight of people struggling for housing, as if homelessness seems less significant when the sun starts shining,' they said. 'As a result, donations to SIFA Fireside dry up in summer, making it even more challenging for them to continue their vital work supporting those who need it the most.' They added: 'These donations are desperately needed for unrestricted funding to help keep the Homeless Intervention Service going.' Robb Sheppard, who is Communication Manager at SIFA Fireside, said their latest campaign is 'another powerful and thought-provoking idea by One Black Bear'. 'Hopefully it will stop people in their tracks, encourage them to take a second look, and make a donation,' he added. The organisation is driving awareness of summer homelessness 'These donations will make a big difference to the day-to-day lives of our city's most vulnerable people.' Wexford man appointed as Peace Commissioner
A committed volunteer the Society of St Vincent de Paul, Tom serves as a Home Visitation officer, support vulnerable individuals and families in Wexford with compassion and confidentiality. Full list of air fryers recalled as owners told to stop use immediately
Air fryers have become increasingly popular in Ireland, with many households investing in them as a way to eat healthier while cutting down on energy costs. By using rapid hot air circulation to cook food, air fryers drastically reduce the need for oil, helping to lower calorie intake and saturated fat consumption compared to traditional frying methods. Beyond their health benefits, air fryers also promise to be more economical than using an oven.
