Inside the World's Largest Retirement Community (it's more exciting than you think)

Yahoo10-04-2025

The Villages is the world's largest retirement community, located in central Florida, and it's probably not what you think. As the fastest-growing metropolitan area in the United States, The Villages spans 57 square miles. For context — Washington, D.C. is only 68 square miles, so only slightly bigger. It's home to 150,000 people ages 55+, but don't let that fool you into thinking the Villages is some sleepy town. No way! It wouldn't be far off to call this place a college town for those in their later years, with a few major upgrades: no homework, better drinks, and a lot of golf carts.
When I say a lot of golf carts, I mean it! The Villages have over 100,000 golf carts; everything, from the doctor's office to the county club, is accessible by over 100 miles of golf cart paths. Residents play over 2.5 million games of golf a year — that's roughly 6,000 games a day! There are 14 country clubs, 117 pools, and over 6,500 clubs offering everything from Zumba and journaling to World War 2 book clubs and pickleball.
Oh, and did I mention there's live music and dancing every single day of the year?
On the flip side, the Villages have picked up quite a scandalous reputation. While attending Zumba and book clubs sounds quite wholesome, this community has been the subject of some scandalous rumors of drinking and swinging (the loofah and upside-down pineapple type). Is The Villages as wholesome as I think it is? Or is there some truth to the rumors?
I decided to head to Florida and visit my amazing granny who has been a resident of The Villages since 2002 I asked her some of my Instagram followers' most pressing questions and got to spend special quality time with her finding out what life at the world's largest retirement community is actually like.
The Villages was built with the idea of letting middle class folk live a full life with lots of luxurious amenities. The residents pay an amenity fee of $199/month that includes access to almost all the activities and amenities that the community offers.
What is the best part of living here, I asked. The answer - you will never be bored! There's stuff to do from 5 AM to 10 PM every single day of the year.
After experiencing The Villages for myself, I can say for certain that this is not an exaggeration. If you go on The Villages' resident app, you'll find a daily events calendar with quite literally hundreds of events a day. You can join a theater company, take a dance class, play water polo, go sailing, learn how to quilt, and everything in between. Access to all of this is included in the amenity fee and members can bring any guests they'd like for free!
My granny is a member at the Orange Blossom Country Club, one of the community's 14 country clubs. Access to the clubs is separate from the amenity fee, but only costs $210/year with unlimited free guest passes. Golfing costs an additional few dollars per game, poolside meals are affordable and happy hour starts at 10 AM — what more could you want?!
The best part of this very active community is the endless opportunities to make friends. Everywhere we went, it really did feel like a village. We stopped to pet dogs on our walk around the lake. At the pool, a group of ladies invited me to put on an impromptu performance with them (we named ourselves the Cabana Girls) and with everyone so close together, my granny's friends often stopped by her house while I was there for a chat, Sunday morning brunch, or dinner.
Although there is a dating scene and I picked up some fun anecdotes, like leaving the tag out on your shirt when you're out dancing so a guy knows you're single, Granny and her friends assured me the rumors were not true…and they definitely didn't know anything about upside down pineapples or loofahs.
For the most part, The Villages are a wholesome group of retirees who just want to have fun! And fun they have. Just ask my granny and she'll tell you that they party every day. One of my favorite parts of The Villages is the daily parties! The community has three town squares that each host live bands and a dance floor every single night of the year. When I've visited The Villages before with my entire extended family, we've spent all night long dancing, laughing, and soaking in the atmosphere. I can't explain how freeing it is to dress up and just go dance in the street with friends, family, and total strangers!
There has been some research done that the Villages are some of America's healthiest communities. Residents may have a longer life expectancy thanks to the social connectedness and active lifestyle.
I grew up visiting my granny in the Village and I have always been impressed by the quality of life that you can have there. It seems exactly the way that humans were meant to live — surrounded by a community of friends, learning new hobbies, and just loving your life! I was so grateful that I got to spend such quality time with my incredible granny and her friends on my trip to The Villages.
Does The Villages sound like someplace you'd want to retire? Check out the video below to see my full trip to the world's largest retirement community!

Alan Ritchson Relies on One Simple Workout Tool to Fuel His Upper-Body Training originally appeared on Men's Fitness. Alan Ritchson isn't wasting any time getting ready for Season 4 of Reacher, sharing a clip of his EZ-bar upper-body superset workout on social media. Reacher's fourth season was confirmed this week, with filming presumably already underway. And as Ritchson shared in a social media post a couple of weeks ago, Season 4 is going to be Reacher's most intensely physical season yet. "My body is ready," he wrote in an Instagram caption. But the grind never packed on 30 pounds of muscle to land the role of Jack Reacher, transforming into a shredded action star. Before Reacher, his go-to moves were bodyweight dips, pushups, pullups, situps, and sprints. Now, he's leaned into resistance training—and it shows. In the new clip, Ritchson knocks out a high-volume upper-body superset using just an EZ-bar. ' "Low(ish) weight + higher volume = hypertrophy and longevity," he writes. "I can't get pregnant or injured right now. Too busy. This works for me." When it comes to supersets, sticking to one piece of equipment makes for quick, seamless transitions while keeping your heart rate up. Keep your elbows close to your sides and curl the bar toward your shoulders. Squeeze at the top, then lower the bar slowly. Hold the EZ-bar overhead with both hands on the inner angled grips. Keeping elbows close to your head, lower the bar behind your neck by bending at the elbows. Press it back up, extending your arms fully. Grip the EZ-bar with palms facing your body and arms extended. Pull the bar straight up to chest height, leading with your elbows. Pause, then lower it back down. What This Online 'Club' Gets Exactly Right About Being Over 40

When, around three weeks ago, I saw a video pop up on my Instagram feed about the 'The We Do Not Care Club' — created by the funny and unapologetic Melani Sanders (@justbeingmelani) — I stopped scrolling and smiled. The first things I thought of? The fact that I don't care about saying no more than I say yes, going braless in public, or what other people think. Sign me up! The We Do Not Care Club is a virtual perimenopause and menopause-club-turned-movement sparked by Sanders, who's sharing a simple but powerful message from peri- and postmenopausal women everywhere: When it comes to playing nice or following the 'rules,' we no longer give a damn. In the first post I saw, she had just left the grocery store and was in her car talking about what she didn't care about; it went viral almost immediately. Since then, the phrase has become a rallying cry for women in midlife who are done performing and ready to speak the truth. Melani currently has 783K followers on Instagram, and the number of women joining her unofficial online 'club' grow with each post. And there's no membership card required…just simple honesty. Her post wasn't loud or flashy — just real. And it hit me right where I live. But the truth is, I'm 54 and I do care about some things: I care deeply about women in midlife. I care about breaking the silence around perimenopause and menopause. I care about making sure women know how to take charge of their health and use their voices to advocate for themselves. But I don't care anymore about playing small. I don't care about being palatable. And I most definitely don't care about all the outdated rules that say women have to disappear as they age. Because that's simply not going to happen. We're finally letting go of what no longer serves us, like unrealistic expectations, shame and silence. For those of us navigating perimenopause, menopause, complicated relationships, and career pivots, that clarity is hard-earned. And I have really found letting go to be, dare I say it, deeply liberating. Now, when I find that I somehow put my keys in the fridge, I accept that fact. When I want to stay in my robe until 3pm, I don't judge myself anymore: I embrace her. Melani regularly shares things that we — peri- and postmenopausal women — have decided 'We Do Not Care' about, including wearing 'supportive' bras. Or whether our clothes match. Or being on time. (Be happy we showed up at all.) And if we're watching TV instead of cleaning the kitchen? That's called self-care. The WDNC Club gives us permission to stop asking for permission. Sanders said it herself: 'I didn't plan to start a movement. I just hit record on a day when I felt really honest, and really tired of performing.' (I can totally relate to that.) The result? Women from Scotland to Sydney are chiming in, forming their own chapters of the We Do Not Care Club. Women want to be seen, heard, and valued as we are, not as we used to be or are expected to be. We're not chasing youth, we're chasing the truth. Midlife isn't a crisis, it's a wake-up call — one that says, 'Hey, most of that stuff you worried about? It doesn't matter.' We're louder now, bolder, funnier. More ourselves than ever. BTW if you're reading this in mismatched pajamas while drinking your third cup of lukewarm coffee, congratulations: You're already in the club. So go ahead, leave Melani a comment on her Instagram account, explaining what you don't care about. Then leave the dishes in the sink. Forget your kids' friend's mom's name. Skip the gym if you're tired. Speak your truth, even if your voice shakes or your hair is in a messy bun. We're here. We're loud. We're unfiltered. And we do not care. Tamsen Fadal is the NY Times bestselling author of the book How to Menopause: Take Charge of Your Health, Reclaim Your Life, and Feel Even Better than Before, a podcaster, and menopause advocate. Livvy Dunne honors boyfriend Paul Skenes with playful twist on LSU jersey

And these are a few of Olivia 'Livvy' Dunne's favorite things. While cheering on her beloved Tigers Saturday at the Men's College World Series in Omaha, the former LSU gymnast-turned-Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover model rocked a custom jersey that paid tribute to her alma mater and her boyfriend, fellow LSU alum and reigning NL Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes. Taking to her Instagram Stories, Dunne — who boasts more than 13 million followers across Instagram and TikTok — showed off her split jersey that recognized the Tigers on the front and Skenes' Pirates on the back. 8 Livvy Dunne modeled a split jersey in June 2025 that recognized MLB boyfriend Paul Skenes, an LSU alum, and the Tigers, at the College World Series. Dunne — whose relationship with Skenes, 23, was revealed in 2023, the same year he and the Tigers captured the College World Series title — had one of the best views in the house at Charles Schwab Field, where LSU defeated Arkansas, 4-1. It's certainly been a spring to remember for Dunne, who was announced as one of the four Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover stars for the 2025 edition of the iconic publication, along with Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles, actress Salma Hayek and entrepreneur Lauren Chan. Dunne, just two years removed from her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit debut, shot what became the cover photo in Bermuda while nursing a knee injury. 8 Livvy Dunne became a first-time Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover model in 2025. Elsewhere this year, Dunne bid farewell to gymnastics after her collegiate career came to an end in April. She won a national championship with LSU last year. 'You will always be my first love,' Dunne said in an emotional tribute video. 8 Paul Skenes (30) made his MLB debut in 2024. As Dunne chases new dreams in this next chapter, she's also supporting Skenes as he lives out his. The Pirates' first-overall pick in 2023, Skenes was officially called up to the majors in May 2024 and struck out seven in his debut. Although Skenes has posted an ERA of 1.78 across 15 games, the Pirates sit in last place in the NL Central at 29-43. Skenes is slated to pitch Sunday to close out Pittsburgh's four-game series against the Cubs.
