Ruby Franke's husband and children speak out in new Hulu docuseries

Axios05-03-2025
There is no shortage of crime documentaries based on cases that unfolded in Utah.
The latest: Hulu's new three-part docuseries " Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke" centers around the rise and fall of the popular parenting vlogger and her business partner, former therapist Jodi Hildebrandt, who were both arrested for child abuse in 2023.
The show features interviews with Franke's estranged husband, who filed for divorce in 2023, and their eldest children.
It "cuts through the social media reaction to explore the untold story behind the Ruby Franke case: part family tragedy, part coming-of-age narrative, part tale of our times about the perils of life lived online," according to the series' description.
Catch up quick: Franke launched the popular YouTube channel "8 Passengers" in 2015, where she documented her family's life and shared parenting advice.
Last year, Franke and Hildebrandt each were sentenced to four to 60 years in prison for abusing Franke's two youngest children.
Between the lines: Franke's eldest daughter, Shari, who appears in the docuseries, authored a book recounting her childhood "The House of My Mother: A Daughter's Quest for Freedom." It was released in January.

'Diaper Diplomacy': YouTube channel features AI baby versions of politicians

Move over E*TRADE Baby — a new generation of talking tykes is going viral, but instead of stock quotes, they're politicians discussing foreign policy, the economy and bickering in congressional committee hearings. Making its debut on YouTube, Diaper Diplomacy videos use artificial intelligence software to transform some of the nation's most well-known political figures, such as President Donald Trump and U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.), into irritable infants while using the actual audio from the interviews or press conferences. With more than 67,000 subscribers and over 40 videos, the channel has garnered millions of views and a loyal following through its recreations of viral political moments, starring "babyfied" politicians of both parties. Diaper Diplomacy has recreated videos of a variety of notable figures in American politics, ranging from Trump visiting a construction site with Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez testifying before Congress, and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., explaining how he discovered and placed a dead bear cub in his car - among others. "Trigger Warning (for everyone): I roast both sides," according to the channel description, "Because let's be honest —our politicians act like toddlers, and it's time someone put them back in time-out." While some videos are for "members only," the channel's creator has widely shared numerous videos as fundraisers for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, allowing "babies to help other babies."USA TODAY has contacted the White House and Booker for comment. But who runs Diaper Diplomacy? According to a bio on "Buy Me a Coffee," Diaper Diplomacy is run by a "regular guy" who is chasing his dreams as a video creator. "[I am] trying to keep my head above water while raising three kids — including a 10-week-old who seems to think diapers grow on trees. If one of my videos gave you a laugh, I'd be super grateful for your support," the bio says. "Every little bit helps me keep making more content (and helps keep my little dude stocked up on diapers)." When recently asked by a viewer in the comments section whether the channel had become a full-time gig, the response was that it's been a "wild ride," and, hopefully, "getting close." "It's not paying all the bills yet, I've got a lot of mouths to feed and actual diapers to buy, but I think within a few months it can," was the response. "We'll see." The channel also touts video-specific merchandise, membership-only perks and access to "Diaper Doppelgänger GTP," the AI tool used to "babify" politicians on both sides of the aisle for $9.95.

Duke Dennis, Twitch and YouTube star, arrested while playing hide and seek at Texas mall

Twitch and YouTube star Duke Dennis was arrested at a mall in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday while partaking in a game of hide and seek, police said. The content creator — whose real name is Denzel Dennis — is part of the online collective know as AMP, which also includes streaming superstar Kai Cenat. Dennis, 31, was at the Shops at Rivercenter on Saturday night playing hide and seek with others while the mall was closed, according to the San Antonio Police Department. Officers responded to the mall "to remove individuals playing hide and seek" as they were "causing disruption throughout the area," police said. Security guards had advised said individuals — including Dennis — to leave the mall but they refused, per police. "An officer instructed the suspect to leave, and the suspect verbally and physically refused to leave the location," police said. "An officer instructed the suspect to place his hands by his back and that he would be arrested for criminal trespassing private property." Dennis allegedly ran away, but security guards and officers were able to arrest him, police said. He was charged with criminal trespassing and evading arrest, according to online records. Another person allegedly tried to interfere with Dennis' arrest by pushing an officer. This individual was also arrested and charged with five counts, including three counts of assault on an officer, one count of interfering with the duties of a public servant and one count of resisting arrest, per online records. Video circulating on social media shows a person who appears to be Dennis getting arrested at the Shops at Rivercenter. Kai Cenat can also be seen in the video, seemingly recording the arrest from the floor above. Dennis has not publicly commented on his arrest, but did share a story to his Instagram on Sunday alluding to him taking a social media break. "Officially on vacation, need suggestions on where to yall later," Dennis wrote. AMP, which stands for "Any Means Possible," is a YouTube collective consisting of Dennis, Cenat, Agent 00, Fanum, ImDavisss and ChrisNxtDoor. The group is known for documenting themselves as they partake in an array of challenges, and sometimes collaborate with other social media personalities for content, including Mr. Beast, Druski and Keith Lee. The group spent the month of July streaming their daily activities for 12 hours a day in what they called "AMP Summer." The trailer for "AMP Summer" featured musician T-Pain. It is not clear if the game of hide and seek at the Shops at Rivercenter was part of an AMP video.

Banning Teens From YouTube Won't Keep Them Safe

Keeping young people safe online is a rallying cry we can all get behind. But the furor in Australia over plans to ban children under 16 from social media shows it's not as simple as it sounds. At the center of the latest debate over the rules set to come into effect later this year is Alphabet Inc.'s YouTube. Officials last week said they were reversing a promised exemption from the legislation for the video-sharing site. Part of the reason YouTube's inclusion has struck such a nerve is because it's impossible to overstate how intertwined it has become with pop culture for a generation who grew up on it.
