Rahul to Akhilesh: We will raise PDA's voice together

1 2 Lucknow: Amid ongoing blow-hot-blow-cold ties between SP and the Cong -- the two key INDIA bloc constituents -- Cong MP Rahul Gandhi and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav not only exchanged pleasantries on X, but the former also assured the latter that they would raise the voice of PDA together. The PDA (backwards, Dalits and minorities) was the term coined by the SP chief to appeal to the OBCs, SCs and Muslims before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. O n the occasion of Rahul's 55th birthday, Akhilesh took to his X handle to extend greetings. "Heartfelt congratulations to Rahul Gandhi on his birthday and best wishes for his harmonious, inclusive, and comprehensive socio-political activism!" wrote Akhilesh. In response to the post, Rahul wrote back: "Akhilesh ji, thank you very much for your wishes. We will continue to raise the voice of the people of Uttar Pradesh — especially the PDA — even more strongly from the streets to Parliament. Together, firmly." This was the first time after the 2024 Lok Sabha polls that the two leaders spoke publicly about 'moving ahead together'. It comes close on the heels of Akhilesh's press statement announcing that the INDIA bloc would contest 2027 UP elections together amid the UP Congress's organisational building workshop focusing on fortifying their unit in all the 403 seats of the state. UP state leaders, however, maintained that there was no rift with the SP. "The so-called rift between SP and us was a handiwork of the BJP propaganda peddlers who are scared of the power of the INDIA bloc," said Ajay Rai, UP Congress president. AICC incharge for UP, Avinash Pande, said: "Organisational building is a primary commitment of party leadership with its followers and workers. We have been working on all the 403 seats of UP to be able to take on the BJP in a much stronger way. Strengthening Congress means fortifying the INDIA bloc as well," he said.

Govt to up housing quota for minorities from 10% to 15%

Bengaluru: The Karnataka govt Thursday resolved to increase reservation in housing schemes for minorities from 10% to 15% in urban and rural Karnataka, a decision which BJP dubbed as one more instance of minority appeasement. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Law and parliamentary minister HK Patil explained the cabinet decision to increase the housing-scheme quota for minorities and said: "We considered the number of houseless families from the minorities, Sachar Committee report, other studies about the houseless families and also instructions from the Union govt." The minister said the 15% quota applies to Muslim, Christian and Jain communities. He clarified that there will be no quota for minorities in the schemes meant exclusively for SC/ST communities. "There was a discussion about the need to increase the housing quota for minorities in the session. The govt has taken this decision keeping social justice in mind. We need not respond to those who do politics in providing houses for poor people," said Patil. Soon after the cabinet meeting, deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar defended the govt decision saying the houses constructed by the housing department in urban areas are lying vacant, and people from minority communities have expressed willingness to move into these houses. "In some urban areas, 20% to 30% of the minority communities are poor. Therefore, a proposal has been made to increase their quota. So, we are increasing the housing allocation reservation for them from 10% to 15%," said Shivakumar. BJP state president BY Vijayendra said reservation on the basis of religion is unconstitutional and that Congress has converted welfare into a marketplace for vote-bank politics. He said this was the second such instance after the state govt passed the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (Amendment) Bill, 2025, to provide a 4% reservation for Muslims in govt civic contracts. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Union minister Prahlad Joshi alleged the cabinet decision was unconstitutional. "Siddaramaiah and his company decided to provide 4% reservation in contracts, which was an unprecedented move in the country. Now, they have decided to allocate a 15% reservation under housing schemes," said Joshi. Amit Malviya, in charge of BJP's National Information & Technology Dept, said, "There can be no reservation on the basis of religion — the Constitution is unambiguous on this. Yet, the Congress govt in Karnataka is hell-bent on pushing religious quotas to appease its vote bank. This isn't governance, it's dangerous social engineering." He further alleged that the Congress is determined to sow the seeds of division, polarise communities, and rip apart the social fabric of Karnataka — all for short-term political gains. ++++ Boxes Agriculture Minister to lobby with Centre on Mango compensation Law and parliamentary affairs minister HK Patil said the cabinet discussed the issue of mango farmers, particularly in Kolar and Bangalore Rural areas, and authorised agriculture minister N Chaluvarayaswamy and chief secretary Shalini Rajneesh to discuss with the Union agriculture minister to seek compensation for farmers. ++++ Cabinet at Nandi Hills on July 17 Law and parliamentary affairs minister HK Patil said the cabinet meeting scheduled to be held at Nandi Hills on Thursday was postponed due to pending proposals from a few departments for the region. Sena Foundation Day: Uddhav hints at alliance with MNS, vows to reclaim Mumbai

Dropping yet another hint about a possible alliance with his estranged cousin Raj Thackeray, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday launched a blistering attack on the BJP and the ruling coalition in Maharashtra, declaring his intent to 'reclaim Mumbai at any cost' and accusing opponents of trying to derail a potential alliance with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) to prevent Marathi unity. Speaking at the 59th Foundation Day of the Shiv Sena, Thackeray indirectly hinted at a union, without explicitly naming the MNS or its leader. 'If we stand united today to preserve the importance of Mumbai, only then can we stop this onslaught… Will that (the alliance) happen? I will do what is in your heart and in the heart of the state,' he said. Thackeray alleged that attempts were being made behind closed doors to block the alliance. 'The servants are working and holding meetings in hotels,' he said, a veiled reference to last week's meeting between Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Raj Thackeray at a Mumbai hotel. Declaring that his party was fully prepared to fight the upcoming elections, Thackeray said, 'They fear for Adani if we win Mumbai. That's why they are trying to divide the Marathi people. But we will reclaim Mumbai.' Taking on the Centre on its language policy, Thackeray accused the BJP of attempting to divide Hindus by making Hindi compulsory in Maharashtra. 'This is another form of 'Katenge toh batenge'… Earlier, they used this line to polarise Hindus and Muslims. Now, by forcing Hindi, they are creating divisions within Hindus,' he said. He dared the BJP to impose Hindi in Gujarat before experimenting with it in Maharashtra. 'We will not allow Hindi to be made compulsory here,' he said. Thackeray also took a jibe at Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, calling a function organised by his camp as 'a gathering of thieves'. Without naming Shinde, he said, 'I pity those who change their fathers and have no political heirs. BJP does the same.' He reminded the BJP of its unfulfilled promise of a rotational CM's post during the 2019 alliance talks. 'The country today needs a Prime Minister, not someone who uses the office for personal gains. India needs a Home Minister, not someone who takes pride in breaking parties.' Turning his fire on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Thackeray recalled the aftermath of terror attacks on Indian tourists in Kashmir and the standoff with Pakistan. 'You tied the hands of our army. One call from Donald Trump, and you became silent. What's the use of such a PM or Home Minister,' he said. He mocked the BJP for allegedly inducting tainted individuals, referring to former Sena (UBT) leader Sudhakar Badgujar, who was once linked by the BJP to Dawood Ibrahim's aide Salim Kutta. 'Are you setting up stalls outside jails? Will you enrol Dawood next,' Thackeray said.
