According to the state's directives, the process of municipal elections will involve three main stages: the formation of wards, determining reservations and dividing the assembly voter list by wards.
Thereafter, the actual election will be conducted.
The process of ward formation will be carried out based on a population of 34.81 lakh as per the 2011 census. Each four-member ward will represent a voter population of 84,000-92,000.
The new body of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will have 165 members.
Prasad Katkar, election officer of PMC, told reporters, "The civic administration will use new-age technology for delimitation. Satellite images and Google Earth will be used for finalising the maps."
The civic administration has appointed 20 employees for the ward restructuring activity. These include engineers, typists, clerks, and IT technicians familiar with the city.
As per civic data, a population of 31.32 lakh was kept as the base for ward formation in 2017. PMC areas had 41 wards, and 162 members (39 four-member wards and two three-member wards). The voter population was 26,34,800 at the time.
After the merger of 11 areas into PMC limits in 2017, two more members were added, and the total reached 164. The voting population went up by 2 lakh.
This population went up to 35,56,824 after 23 more areas were added into PMC in 2021.

However, after the demerger of two areas in 2024, total population in PMC areas has come to 34,81,359. This will be considered as the base for the civic election.
"The details of voter population for the upcoming civic election will be decided after the state's directives. The number of voters will depend on the cut-off date set by the election commission. Tentatively, it will be around 45 lakh," said a senior PMC official.

PMC elections likely after Diwali as state issues final delimitation schedule

With the Maharashtra government issuing a detailed timeline for the delimitation of electoral wards on Thursday, it is now evident that elections to municipal corporations across the state, including Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal corporations will be held only after September 4, before which the final draft for restructured wards to be published. This effectively places the likely poll window in the post-Diwali period, as the festive season falls in October this year. The state urban development department recently finalised and notified the schedule for preparing four-member wards in all municipal corporations. The final ward structure is expected to be published between August 29 and September 4, leaving a short window for the State Election Commission (SEC) to announce poll dates. As per sources in the state government, civic elections are unlikely to be held during Diwali as urban voters tend to travel to their native towns during the festival. 'No party wants polling during Diwali. The likely window is either before or after the festival. But given the delimitation timeline, post-Diwali elections appear more feasible,' said a senior official from PMC. Diwali this year comes on October 21. Following the Supreme Court's recent directives to hold long-delayed local body elections without further delay, the state government has moved to complete the delimitation process swiftly. Another senior Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) official requesting anonymity said, 'The civic machinery will complete the work within the given timeline. Since the four-member ward structure was used during the 2017 civic polls, major changes may not be needed in the old city limits. Only the newly merged villages will see some redrawing of boundaries.' In the previous elections, Pune had a total of 41 four-member panels (totaling 164 corporators). However, the merger of 34 villages in 2021 is expected to slightly alter this composition. The delimitation exercise will involve ground verification, the use of satellite maps, and a round of public consultation. The draft structure will be open for suggestions and objections in late July, before being finalised by early September. Schedule for forming four-member wards Formation of wards: June 11 to June 16 Draft structuring of wards: June 17 to July 10 Population verification: June 17–18 Site visits: June 19–23 Ward maps using Google Maps: June 24–30 On-ground verification of boundaries: July 1–3 Committee to sign draft maps: July 4–7 Submission of draft to SEC: July 8–10 Publication of draft and feedback window: July 22–31 Hearings on objections: August 1–11 Preparation of final structure: August 12–18 Final publication of ward structure: August 29 to September 4

Civic poll aspirants expect admin to mark wards along natural boundaries

Pune: Aspirants across party lines and those looking to contest as independents have started preparations for the upcoming civic polls following the state govt's announcement for a detailed schedule for the formation of wards. Many hopefuls are looking forward to tap upcoming festivals and special days to reach out to their voter base. Others have expressed apprehensions over the possibilities of abrupt breaking up of wards during the process of delimitation which may hamper their prospects. The areas under Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) are expected to be divided into 42 wards for the forthcoming polls, each with four members. The civic administration has started the delimitation process. A senior former corporator from Congress said that the administration should follow natural boundaries like rivers, nullahs, hills, or a main road to define the ward boundaries. "However, it was observed that in a recent such exercise, the wards were carved up abruptly to favour those in power. We strongly objected to the ward formation at that time, and we will raise objections now too if the wards are not properly formed," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's The Price for a 1-Day Walk-in Shower In 2025 Homebuddy Learn More Undo A Shiv Sena (UBT) member said that many discrepancies were noticed in the formation of wards in Kothrud and Satara Road during the delimitation process carried out in 2022. Housing societies were put into into two separate wards, and members of the same families were listed in the same manner. "We want the administration to strictly avoid such instances for the forthcoming polls. The ward formation holds a key in defining the voter base, the process should not have any interference," he added. Sources from the city's political circles said that the contest is expected to be intense between Mahayuti and MVA, though both alliances are yet to finalise the seat-sharing formula. A BJP functionary and an aspirant said that there will be huge competition for tickets and the party should identify deserving candidates. The aspirant said that he already started meeting citizens in his area and held a function for the women residents on the occasion of "Vat-Pournima" festival on Tuesday. Insiders from all prominent parties said that many former corporators are looking ahead to re-join the fray. An aspirant from the Baner area said that the elections were supposed to take place in 2022 but were delayed for various reasons. "We are expecting decent formation of wards without any favouritism and undue pressure from political parties," an aspirant said. What's On Their Minds? Stick to natural boundaries during ward formation Do not split a housing society, a slum pocket, or a vasti into separate wards Avoid interference of political parties and leaders Restrict abrupt formation of wards Consult locals before fixing boundaries of wards Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Lawyers continue to boycott work against razing of chambers

1 2 Prayagraj: Lawyers of Prayagraj district court on Thursday continued their agitation and work boycott on the second consecutive day against the demolition of their chambers by Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Wednesday. Agitating lawyers staged a blockade in front of the district court by putting the broken chairs and tables of their chambers in the middle of the road. They claimed that the chambers were demolished without making any alternative arrangements for them. District Court Bar Association leader Rakesh Dubey said demolishing chambers without prior notice was illegal and it violated the professional rights of lawyers. "The agitation will continue until the chambers are reconstructed and actions are taken against the guilty persons," he said. The PMC had on Wednesday demolished over 100 'illegal' chambers on the district court premises claiming that they were constructed without any prior approval. Subsequently, a delegation of the association along with several lawyers reached the PMC office and met the district magistrate and mukhya nagar adhikari to register their protest.
