After the match, Utsunomiya head coach Zico Coronel praised his players' competitive spirit.
"This is kind of what we've continued to do: no matter what situation we're in, we just fight," Coronel said, according to FIBA.com. "We stayed together and made big plays."
He described the team's second championship in as many months as "very pleasing."
Hiejima said his team made important adjustments in the final.
"The other team got into a rhythm at the start of the game, but we gradually got into a rhythm from our defense and focused on rebounding," Hiejima told reporters.
"It was a game that either team could have won. But in the end we were able to win by doing the small things, so it was a good game." DJ Newbill shoots a layup in the championship match. (©FIBA)
In the tourney's group stage, the Brex dropped their opener, losing 97-86 to the Meralco Bolts of the Philippines on June 8.
A day later, Utsunomiya beat Dubai's Shahab Al Ahli 105-99.
In the quarterfinals on June 11, the Brex topped Iran's Tabat Basketball 94-93.

Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks starter Livan Moinelo improved to 6-0 in the 2025 NPB season on Friday, June 13. The veteran left-hander allowed three hits and went the distance in the Hawks' 4-1 victory over the visiting Yokohama DeNA BayStars in interleague play.
Moinelo struck out 13 batters in his first complete game of the season. He threw 118 pitches.
Looking back on his performance, Moinelo said fatigue was not a factor.
"I didn't [throw] many pitches, so I felt I had a lot of energy left in me," he said, according to Jiji Press, referring to the eighth inning.
The Hawks, who are in fourth place in the Pacific League, improved to 30-27-3 with Friday's triumph.
Moinelo has a Pacific League-best 89 strikeouts in 78⅓ innings. The Cuban-born pitcher has issued only 16 walks. He has a sparkling 1.26 ERA.
"My main goal is for the team to win no matter what the situation is," Moinelo was quoted as saying by Jiji Press. "As long as we win, that's all that matters."
On June 6, Moinelo fanned 18 batters, one shy of the NPB record, in eight innings against the Tokyo Yakult Swallows.

Major League Baseball and innovative artists have joined together to promote the 12 current Japanese MLB players.
Twelve unique manhole covers, one representing each of the dozen players, will be installed in cities across Japan where they grew up, starting on Monday, June 16.
A trio of Iwate Prefecture natives ― Shohei Ohtani, Yusei Kikuchi and Roki Sasaki ― will have their manhole covers unveiled on Monday in Oshu City, Morioka and Rikuzentakata, respectively.
The list includes Lars Nootbaar, a St Louis Cardinals outfielder who played for Japan in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Although he was born in the United States, Nootbaar's mother is from Higashimatsuyama, Saitama Prefecture, where his manhole cover will be displayed.
This celebration of the players through public displays of art will also incorporate modern technology to transform the manhole covers into portals of interactive activity.
"The manholes will feature content exclusive to those that experience the excitement on-site, through short AR movies that can be viewed on mobile devices by scanning the manholes," a news release explained.
Check out the full installation schedule for the manhole covers published in this news release on MLB's official website. Japanese boxers (from left) Daigo Higa, Kenshiro Teraji and Kyosuke Takami attend a news conference on June 11. (©SANKEI)

Gulutzan officially hired by Stars; Perry's new jersey; Arvidsson's bear tale

This 'n that: Oiler UFA John Klingberg's $4M AAV for one year in San Jose is peanuts compared to what guys were signing for, but he now is the highest-paid Sharks D. Mario Ferraro is next at $3.25 million. The Sharks are miles under the salary cap floor… No surprise that Ken Holland is signing Cody Ceci in Los Angeles after scrambling to bring him to the Oilers when Adam Larsson left for Seattle. Holland gave Ceci a four-year deal here with 10 teams trying to sign Ceci as a UFA for three years in 2021. Same four years in LA on Canada Cay at $4.5 million AAV. Good for Ceci, now on his fourth team since the 2024 Cup final (Edmonton, San Jose, Dallas and L.A.) but that's a lot of cheese for a guy who might be in the Kings' third pair. So now (check notes) we've got ex-Oilers Ceci and Perry, also Warren Foegele in LA now…. Kings signed Ceci and Brian Dumoulin at a combined $8.5 million AAV to try and mitigate the loss of their UFA D Vlad Gavrikov to the Rangers, but with all due respect to those vets, they aren't Gavrikov. He was the Kings' most consistently good D last season… Amazing what a Cup ring will do. Florida's third-pairing D Nate Schmidt, on a slim $800,000 last year, just got three years in Utah at $3.5 million AAV. And the smart Panthers are replacing Schmidt with Jeff Petry at $775,000 with bonuses… If Oilers are into buy-low on UFA's there are a few still out there. Like Victor Olafsson (Vegas), Anthony Beauvillier (Washington), Anthony Mantha (Calgary), and some fourth-liners like Curtis Lazar (New Jersey) and Joel Kiviranta (Colorado). Justin Brazeau (Minnesota) signed a two-year deal in Pittsburgh, Adam Gaudette, another possibility, signed two years with the Sharks… Ryan McLeod's new four-year, $20 million deal to stay with the Sabres is maybe a tad low for the ex-Oiler who had a career high 53 points this past season… When the Oilers didn't qualify farmhand starter Olivier Rodrigue, it sounds like they made an organizational decision that the 25-year-old wasn't going to be an NHL goalie, or they have a veteran in mind to take his spot in Bakersfield. Late Tuesday afternoon, they announced they had signed Edmonton-born Matt Tomkins, most recently of Tampa Bay, to a two-year, two-way contract with $775,000 AAV… One-time Oiler draft pick Matej Blumel, who had 86 points in 81 games on Dallas's Texas Stars team last season, signed in Boston for $875,000 one-way. Mistake, it says here, not to have signed Blumel… Ex-Oiler D Ethan Bear, who played for Washington's farm team last season, is on the move again, signing a two-way deal for $775,000 (NHL) and $325,000 (AHL)… The Avs signed Bakersfield UFA defenceman Ronnie Attard, who came to the farm last season from Philly for Ben Gleason, to a one-year deal… Ex-Oiler Kailer Yamamoto, who had 56 points in 54 games last year in the AHL, decided to re-sign with Utah, a two-way deal just like last year, with guaranteed $500,000 to play in Tucson.

Mexican driver Daniel Suárez out of NASCAR ride at Trackhouse Racing at end of 2025 season

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Daniel Suárez, the only Mexican-born driver to win a NASCAR national series race, is out at Trackhouse Racing at the end of the 2025 season. Trackhouse and Suárez officially called the parting a 'mutual decision' that allows the driver an earlier opportunity to pursue a new ride for next season. While Trackhouse did not name a replacement in the No. 99 Chevrolet, Suárez's departure opened the door for the team to promote teen sensation Connor Zilisch into the ride. Zilisch, who drives in the Xfinity Series for JR Motorsports, has run three Cup races for Trackhouse this season, including Saturday night at Atlanta. Suárez has just two wins in 305 career Cup starts, and is a distant 29th in the points standings this season. The 33-year-old Suarez is in his fifth season with Trackhouse Racing and was the team's first driver in 2021. He made NASCAR's playoffs two times with Trackhouse. 'We took a team nobody had even heard of in 2021 and in just a couple of years we were winning races and running upfront on a weekly basis,' Suárez wrote on social media. 'Just like the seasons in a year, sometimes things change and we have agreed to each go in our own direction.' Trackhouse founder and owner Justin Marks thanked Suárez for his contributions. 'The role Daniel has played in the Trackhouse origin story and its first five years will remain a valued part of the company's history forever,' Marks said. 'His commitment, work ethic and dedication to the effort is one of the most impressive things I personally have seen in my career.' Trackhouse Racing also has Ross Chastain and Shane van Gisbergen under contract, along with Zilisch is its development driver. Chastain has six career wins and was the 2022 Cup Series runner-up while van Gisbergen has a win this year and is in the playoffs. Suárez, who became an American citizen last year, also has three Xfinity Series wins and one Truck Series win. His 2016 championship in the second-tier Xfinity Series made him the only foreign-born driver to win a national series title. He made a triumphant return last month to his home country when he won the Xfinity Series race in Mexico City driving for JR Motorsports at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Yet the balance of celebrating a homecoming with looming contract negotiations weighed on Suárez. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. 'It's not the first time that I've been in this position. Definitely the first time with the Mexico race, but it's not the first time that I've been in the position that we have to win or in the position that we have a contract negotiation in the middle of the season,' Suárez said. 'It's definitely a distraction. I won't sit here and tell you that it doesn't really matter. I'm trying to be as smart as possible and to put all this stuff on the side and just do my thing on the track.' He'll do his thing at the track in 2026 with yet another new team. Suarez started his Cup career with Joe Gibbs Racing and has raced for Stewart-Haas Racing and Gaunt Brothers Racing. He has Cup wins in 2022 at Sonoma and last year in Atlanta. ___ AP auto racing:

Michael Pezzetta coming home to Maple Leafs on two-year deal

Michael Pezzetta, a Toronto-born left winger playing for the Montreal Canadiens, won't feel so disoriented now. In the Maple Leafs' first and perhaps only move when NHL free agency opened Tuesday, the 6-foot-1, 219-pound checking winger agreed to a two-year deal with a $785,500 AAV. With a dwindling salary cap after re-signing Matthew Knies and adding Nicolas Roy in the Mitch Marner trade, general manager Brad Treliving had about $5 million to play with, according to the salary cap web site Puckpedia. A sixth-round pick in 2016, he was Montreal's leader in hits for his two previous seasons prior to playing just 25 games last year when he still compiled 73. Points-wise, while getting as many as 52 in one OHL campaign, his most in the NHL were 15 in 63 games in '22-23. Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion. He did have a memorable shootout goal against the Buffalo Sabres that season, riding his stick in celebration in homage to former Leaf Tiger Williams. Pezzetta's arrival likely means the departure of Ryan Reaves, who ice time dwindled to the stage of being demoted to the Toronto Marlies. The 38-year-old Reaves has one year remaining at $1.35 million. Lhornby@ X: @sunhornby
