Poulakidas' 5 3s help carry Yale past Cornell 90-84; Elis win Ivy title and claim the NCAA berth

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — John Poulakidas knocked down five 3-pointers in the second half as regular-season champion Yale added the Ivy League Tournament championship with a 90-84 win over Cornell on Sunday to earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
The senior guard got off to a slow start, scoring just two points in the first half and missing all four 3-point attempts as Yale took a 37-32 advantage into intermission. That changed to start the second half when he erupted for eight points during a 90-second span, burying two 3s and a jumper to push the Bulldogs' lead to 16 points, 50-34 with under 16 minutes to play.
Cornell clawed back. Guy Ragland Jr., Adam Hinton and Nazir Williams each hit 3-pointers in the span of just over a minute to get within seven and Ragland hit two more 3s to make it 60-58 with 9:18 left. Bez Mbeng answered with a 3 for Yale and Poulakidas hit from deep to make it 66-60, but Cornell got a three-point play from AK Okereke to make it a three-point game. Trevor Mullin and Poulakidas each hit a 3 and Nick Townsend scored twice during a 10-4 run for a76-68 lead with five minutes left.
Poulakidas finished 8 of 14 from the floor, including 5-for-9 from distance, while going 4-for-4 from the line. Townsend finished with 19 points with four assists and two steals, Mbeng contributed 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Casey Simmons added 13 points.
Okereke led Cornell (18-11) with 22 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals. Williams was 8-for-8 from the line and scored 20 points. Ragland hit 4 of 6 from deep to add 16 points with seven rebounds and Jake Fiegen contributed 11 points.

Iga Swiatek's overnight turnaround from Cincinnati to New York

NEW YORK (AP) — Around 8 p.m. Monday, Iga Swiatek was holding up her Cincinnati Open championship trophy. Around 8 a.m. Tuesday, she was getting ready for her mixed doubles match at the U.S. Open in New York City. It's been a quick turnaround. 'This was the most extreme situation and most extreme schedule I've had after a title win,' Swiatek, currently ranked second in the world, said Tuesday afternoon. 'An hour and a half after the match, we already went to catch a plane.' But that didn't slow her down. Swiatek and Casper Ruud, her mixed doubles partner, won both of their Tuesday matches to secure a spot in Wednesday's mixed doubles quarterfinal, where they'll be competing for a spot in the $1 million title game. 'Actually, it's kind of nice to have another task, and to not let yourself be lazy but really focus on the next exciting thing,' she said about the quick turnaround. Ruud didn't always feel quite so calm about it. He was dining in New York while Swiatek played her title match in Ohio and keeping a close eye on the score. He was secretly chatting with Swiatek's team throughout the match — 'she doesn't know this,' Ruud said with a laugh — and wondering about their doubles match the next morning. 'I can't lie. I was a little concerned,' he said about watching Swiatek continue to progress through the Cincinnati Open's rounds. He exited the tournament in the first round. '(But) she was here doing her warmup at 10 a.m. … I look at Iga and I'm like, 'This is determination, like I've never seen it before.'' The quick turnaround from Cincinnati is new for singles players at the U.S. Open. With this year's reimagined mixed doubles draw, which includes top singles players for the first time, the week that was usually recovery time is now playing time. Carlos Alcaraz, the men's champion in Cincinnati, faced a similar turnaround to his afternoon doubles match with Emma Raducanu. He did have a few more hours on each end, given the scheduling of both tournaments. Alcaraz was knocked out of mixed doubles Tuesday afternoon, but Swiatek and Ruud will be back in action Wednesday. 'Iga will have a good sleep tonight,' said Ruud. 'She deserves that.'

Mbappé converts penalty kick as Real Madrid beats Osasuna 1-0 in Spanish league opener

MADRID (AP) — Kylian Mbappé got off to a scoring start in his second season with Real Madrid, leading the team to a 1-0 victory over Osasuna in their Spanish league opener Tuesday. Mbappé, the leading scorer in his debut with Madrid last season, converted a 51st-minute penalty kick to give the hosts the victory. A nice run by Mbappé through the right side of the area, followed by a neat cutback move, prompted the foul. The goal gave new coach Xabi Alonso a winning debut in his first full season with the club. The former Madrid player arrived before the Club World Cup to replace Carlo Ancelotti, who left to take the Brazil job. 'It was special to be back here as a coach, unforgettable,' Alonso said. 'Hopefully it was the first of many victories celebrated here.' Alonso started the match with three of the club's new signings for the season — left back Álvaro Carreras, right back Trent Alexander-Arnold and central defender Dean Huijsen. Teenage forward Franco Mastantuono came off the bench to replace Brahim Díaz in the 68th, being loudly cheered by the crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Some fans had not been happy after the former River Plate player praised Lionel Messi — the fellow Argentine who was a star at rival Barcelona — during his introductory news conference. The 18-year-old Mastantuono had a chance to score in the 89th, but his shot from inside the area was saved by the Osasuna goalkeeper. 'They all did well,' Alonso said of the newcomers. 'They are players who will be helping us for years. None of them felt the pressure of the Madrid jersey or of the Bernabeu.' Osasuna defender Abel Bretones was sent off in stoppage time with a straight red card for a high arm to block Madrid forward Gonzalo García. 'They dominated, we knew it was going to be like that,' Osasuna midfielder Rubén García said. 'We played a good game but couldn't get too close to their goal. In the end, they deserved the victory.' Madrid forward Rodrygo stayed on the bench the whole match, intensifying speculation of a possible transfer. Alonso downplayed Rodrygo's lack of minutes, saying he still counts on the Brazil international for now. 'It was only a match,' he said. 'If in three months he still isn't getting these minutes, then it's different.' The game was played Tuesday instead of last weekend along with the rest of opening matches because Madrid's players needed more rest following the team's participation at the Club World Cup. Madrid's attempt to delay its debut even further was denied by the league. Madrid controlled possession — more than 70% — but struggled to break through the tight Osasuna defense early, threatening with a few long-range shots. 'There were positives, beginning with the result,' Alonso said. 'We still need a few things that will give us stability to keep progressing.' Mbappé, with the No. 10 jersey this season, had one of Madrid's best first-half chances with a curling shot from inside the area that just missed the top corner, but finally broke through with the winner early in the second half as Madrid continued to press forward. He sent a low shot from the spot into the right side of the net as the goalkeeper dived the other way. 'You can tell that Mbappé wants more,' Alonso said. Barcelona began its title defense with a comfortable 3-0 win at nine-man Mallorca on Saturday, while Atletico Madrid squandered a late lead in a 2-1 loss at Espanyol on Sunday. Madrid was runner-up to Barcelona in the Spanish league last season. Osasuna finished ninth. ___ AP soccer: Tales Azzoni, The Associated Press

Wings center Li Yueru is out for the season after spraining a knee ligament

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Dallas Wings center Li Yueru will miss the rest of the season after spraining the ACL in her left knee against the Los Angeles Sparks last week. The team said Tuesday the 26-year-old from China is expected to make a full recovery. Li was injured in a 97-96 loss to the Sparks on Friday. She averaged 7.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in her third WNBA season, which was split between Seattle and Dallas. Li was traded in June. The injury to the 6-foot-7 Li is the latest in a series of setbacks for the Wings, who are mired near the bottom of the standings for a second consecutive season. They had the No. 1 pick in the draft this past spring and selected star guard Paige Bueckers. While Bueckers is a heavy favorite to be named WNBA Rookie of the Year, the Wings entered Tuesday with the third-worst record in the league. Li's injury comes with high-scoring guard Arike Ogunbowale sidelined by a right knee injury. ___
