King County sees first decline in gun violence since 2018, report shows
It's happening in our neighborhoods and on our freeways: rampant gun violence in King County. It prompted King County Executive Dow Constantine to recognize gun violence as a public health emergency in 2021.
But now, the county seems to be turning a corner, with new data showing a decline in the violence for the first time since 2018.
On Thursday, the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office released a 2024 Gun Violence Report.
The report shows homicides by firearms down nearly 30% in 2024. With 107 firearm homicide victims in 2023, down to 75 firearm homicide victims in 2024.
Non-fatal shootings also decreased, along with overall shootings in the county. There were 1701 reported 'shots fired incidents' in 2023. That number reduced to 1591 in 2024.
'It's very encouraging to see that we've kind of broken this fever pitch of gun violence that really ratcheted up in the pandemic and in the years that followed,' says Douglas Wagoner with the King County Prosecutor's Office.
Wagoner underscores that gun violence, while decreasing, is not felt equally across King County. Shooting victims are disproportionately male (82%), and people of color (76%).
'There's obviously a lot of work that remains to be done,' says Wagoner.

What we know Two men allegedly entered Macklemore's residence through an unlocked patio door around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, and sprayed the nanny in the face with bear mace. The nanny told officers one of the suspects helped her clean the mace from her eyes before saying, "where are the jewels, bi—h?" Police say they then grabbed the nanny's arm as she led them around the house, where they raided various rooms and closets, getting away with numerous watches, jewelry and shoes they put into bags. At one point, the nanny said the men threw her to the ground and took her phone while assaulting her. She was able to escape after biting one of the suspect's hands, escaping through a bathroom, and fleeing to several neighbors' homes until someone allowed her inside to call police, according to the report. The incident happened after the nanny put three kids to sleep in their beds. The children were safely extracted after officers arrived and cleared the home. The nanny described the suspects as two Black males, one "taller one" and a "shorter one," wearing all black, face masks, gloves and tactical vests. This home invasion shares similarities to a series of other break-ins at the homes of several high-profile athletes in the Seattle area. Police recently arrested Earl Henderson Riley IV,the leader of a burglary ring that targeted pro athletes like Richard Sherman, Blake Snell and Luis Castillo. While the ringleader is in jail, his two accomplices remain on the loose, and court documents state they left behind bear spray in the home invasion of Seattle Mariners star Julio Rodriguez's home. Seattle Man Arrested In Connection To String Of Athlete Burglaries
A Seattle man has been charged with a series of burglaries at the homes of prominent current and former football and baseball players. Earl Henderson Riley IV, 21, faces multiple counts of residential burglary and first-degree robbery, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. Prosecutors allege that Riley led a theft spree beginning in February, targeting athletes' homes while they were away for games and other events. As previously reported by The Dallas Express, multiple athletes have reported burglaries during various events, leading authorities to suspect that these cases could all be connected. Dallas athletes who have reported break-ins while away from their homes include Stars forward Tyler Seguin and former Maverick Luka Doncic, though it remains unclear if Riley was connected to these crimes. The stolen items associated with the allegations against Riley include over $6,000 in Louis Vuitton bags from Mariners pitcher Luis Castillo's residence, more than $194,000 worth of high-end purses and jewelry from center fielder Julio Rodríguez's home, and several watches valued at over $100,000 from former Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman's house, according to ABC News. King County Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion said in a statement about the arrest that the office 'worked for weeks on multiple search warrants that led to the filing of these felony charges today.' 'I am grateful for the excellent work from our deputy prosecutors and from police investigators on these home burglaries, and all burglaries filed in King County. All people deserve to feel safe in their homes, and our office will continue to hold people accountable for criminal behavior.' This investigation is ongoing, and there are additional charges that could be added at a later time. Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Gary Ernsdorff said in the statement that this arrest 'doesn't mean our work is finished,' and everyone else involved will be pursued. 'We still want to go and identify everybody who was involved and see if there are additional people that we can have sufficient evidence to charge.' Riley is currently being held in King County Jail on a $1 million bail for the charges associated with this investigation. Washington state authorities have charged and accused a man of robbing the homes of multiple professional Seattle-area athletes, including former Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman and Mariners center fielder Julio Rodríguez. The King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office announced the charges on June 6 against the 21-year-old man, whom they did not identify. County inmate records, along with reporting by ABC News and NBC News, say that Earl Henderson Riley IV was booked on June 6 for four counts of residential burglary, one count of first-degree robbery, one count of eluding police and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm. The prosecuting attorney's office alleges the Seattle man burglarized the homes of Sherman, Rodríguez, Mariners pitcher Luis Castillo and Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell, who is from the area. Prosecutors say the alleged serial burglar is being held in the King County Jail on $1 million bail. "All people deserve to feel safe in their homes, and our office will continue to hold people accountable for criminal behavior.' Alleged burglar in custody deemed the 'ringleader' The investigation into the burglaries began in early 2025, the prosecuting attorney's office said, adding that it was working with six different police jurisdictions in the case at one point. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed against others who are believed to be involved, according to the prosecutors. Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Gary Ernsdorff called the individual in custody the "ringleader of this bunch," and by charging him, it allowed authorities to "interrupt this burglary crew," he added. "That doesn't mean our work is finished. We still want to go and identify everybody who was involved and see if there are additional people that we can have sufficient evidence to charge," Ernsdorff said in a statement. The prosecuting attorney's office said the alleged burglar was previously held in custody and released by the court on Feb. 7, after pleading guilty to three separate robbery counts. Court records reviewed by USA TODAY show Riley pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree robbery on Jan. 27, stemming from an arrest on Aug. 15, 2023. According to the prosecuting attorney's office, the individual in custody has another pending King County Superior Court case, which includes the eluding police and first-degree unlawful firearm possession charges.
