Chris Woakes joins the sporting stars who played through the pain

Independent04-08-2025
Chris Woakes bravely came out to bat with a dislocated shoulder on Monday as England fell to defeat in the fifth Test against India.
The all-rounder entered proceedings at the Kia Oval with his arm in a sling tucked underneath his jumper and winced in pain as he ran between the wickets.
Here the PA news agency takes a look at some other sporting stars who persisted and played through injury.
Lucy Bronze
England were crowned European champions at the end of July having successfully defended their title from 2022 with a penalty shoot-out victory over Spain.
Bronze had been ever-present for the Lionesses after playing every minute of the tournament in Switzerland until picking up a knee injury in extra time during the final.
However, in a post-match interview Bronze revealed that she had played the entire competition with a fractured tibia.
'I've actually played the whole tournament with a fractured tibia, but no one knew. And now I've hurt my knee on the other leg,' the 33-year-old full-back told the BBC afterwards.
'I think that is why I got a lot of praise from the girls after the Sweden game because I'm in a lot of pain but that's what it takes to play for England and that's what I will do. They know that and we inspire each other by playing through things like that and it got us to the end in the end.'
Malcolm Marshall
During the West Indies tour of England in 1984, Marshall broke his hand.
The West Indies bowler sustained a double fracture to his left thumb at Headingley and remarkably managed to bat one-handed, hitting a boundary while helping Larry Gomes reach a century.
Marshall then went on to impress in the second innings, where – with a plastercast on his left hand – he took seven wickets for 53 runs to reduce England to 159 all out and the West Indies went on to win the Test.
Bert Trautmann
Playing for Manchester City in their second successive FA Cup final in 1956, Trautmann's side were leading 3-1 with 15 minutes left to play.
The City goalkeeper was then called into action to stop a cross destined for Peter Murphy and collided with the Birmingham player while making the save.
Trautmann was treated with smelling salts and a wet sponge before continuing to play in discomfort with an issue in his neck.
Only days after helping City lift the trophy, X-rays revealed that the goalkeeper had actually broken his neck during the game.
Tiger Woods
Woods produced a battling performance at the 2008 US Open, where he won his 14th major in visible pain.
The-then world number one had undergone surgery on his left knee two days after finishing second in the Masters in April.
Woods was limping at times during the tournament, but managed to force a play-off with a birdie putt on the 18th hole and made another birdie in the play-off, winning on the 91st hole.
Days after winning, Woods announced he would undergo reconstructive surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and have time to rehabilitate a fracture of the left tibia in his leg.

Alice Capsey hits overdue Hundred half-century as Invincibles clip Phoenix wings

Alice Capsey's first half-century in 10 innings in The Hundred lifted Oval Invincibles to their first victory of this season after they downed Birmingham Phoenix by 22 runs at Edgbaston. Former Australia captain Meg Lanning swiped 36 off 19 balls in a 76-run opening stand with Invincibles skipper Lauren Winfield-Hill (33), laying the foundations for Capsey to capitalise on the fine start. The 21-year-old has struggled for England in the past 12 months, but she has shone for Surrey recently and demonstrated flashes of her best form back on the biggest of stages in a sparkling 29-ball 52. Paige Scholfield added 25 not out off 16 deliveries as the Invincibles, who lost their first two games this year, posted 174 for five, their highest ever total and the third best in the event's history. Amanda-Jade Wellington, out for a golden duck, took centre stage in the reply, following up a juggling catch to dismiss Georgia Voll (22) with a no-look underarm back flick to run out Emma Lamb (25). In between the Australia's leg spin did for Marie Kelly and Ellyse Perry, who was looking dangerous on 29 before feathering behind, ultimately ending the Phoenix's charge as they settled for 152 for six.

Yves Bissouma dropped by Thomas Frank for disciplinary reasons in first test of Spurs manager

Yves Bissouma has been dropped from Tottenham Hotspur's squad for the Uefa Super Cup because of disciplinary reasons. The midfielder has remained in London and not travelled as part of the 22-strong squad that will face Paris St-Germain in the prestigious curtain raiser between the Champions League and Europa League winners. The issue is the first big test for Tottenham's new head coach Thomas Frank who revealed he has punished the 28-year-old because he has been persistently late. 'He has been late several times and now this time, it was one too many,' Frank said. 'With everything, you need to give your players a lot of love but also have demands and have consequences. And this was the consequence of that.' Asked what will now happen – and Frank has to weigh up whether to fine Bissouma up to two weeks wages – Frank said: 'For me, there's been a consequence for this trip and I will follow up when I go home on that. I have parked it for now because there is an important game tomorrow.' Spurs will fly back to London on Thursday to prepare for their opening Premier League fixture against Burnley at home on Saturday. Frank will have to decide whether to include Bissouma for that fixture. Spurs have been training at their base in Enfield for the past two days before flying to Italy. It is not the first time that the Mali international, who was signed from Brighton and Hove Albion for £30m in 2022, has been in disciplinary trouble. He faced suspension last season after footage appeared to show him inhaling laughing gas last August. He again missed the opening league game of the season, against Leicester City. Bissouma apologised for 'a severe of judgement'. Possession of nitrous oxide – also known as NOS – for recreational use has been a criminal offence in the United Kingdom since 2023 and can result in a two-year prison sentence. At the time the then Spurs head coach Ange Postecolgou said he hoped the incident and punishment 'allows him [Bissouma] to make better decisions moving forward'.

Patrick Cantlay chasing third BMW Championship crown

August 12 - As he seeks his third BMW Championship title this week, Patrick Cantlay's daily routine begins long before he steps to the first tee. Managing a longstanding back issue, Cantlay sees his physical therapist 2 1/2 hours before his tee time and then visits his trainer in the gym. "For me it's all about putting deposits in the bank. I want to do all the preventative things possible to make sure I feel good every day, and that way I don't have to push the panic button when something starts to hurt," Cantlay, 33, told reporters via Zoom on Tuesday. "I think, if I can do all the good things all the time as a practice, as a discipline, as a habit, then I don't have to worry about my back hurting because it never really gets in a spot where it can hurt." Cantlay, the 2020-21 FedEx Cup champion, heads into the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs and final weekend of Ryder Cup qualifying after a T9 finish Sunday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis. He finished 27-under to win the 2021 BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md., the site of this week's tournament. He made it back-to-back BMW wins at the Wilmington (Del.) Country Club in 2022. Cantlay lived up to his "Patty Ice" nickname to capture the 2021 event, holding off Bryson DeChambeau to win on their sixth playoff hole. The course at Caves Valley has since moved from a par 72 to a par 70. "Yeah, I've heard they've made some changes to the golf course, and I think this time of year it really all depends what kind of weather we get," Cantlay said. "If it rains a lot and there's not a lot of wind, it will play easier. If it gets firm and fast conditions, a golf course like Caves Valley could be extremely difficult. "Especially now hearing -- this is the first time I've heard it's moved to a par 70. You get a long golf course and make it par 70, it's most likely going to be difficult." Cantlay ranks 15th in the Ryder Cup rankings with three automatic qualifying spots to be determined this weekend, with missed cuts at this season's last three majors costing him dearly. He is No. 24 in the Official World Golf Ranking. The nine-time PGA Tour winner hasn't collected a trophy since his 2022 BMW Championship victory, but he'll stick with his daily regimen to stay healthy and in contention. "We play so much golf so often and practice so hard that we need to make sure we're doing enough preventative things to allow our bodies to do that work every day," he said. "It's just something I committed to, like you say, as a result of having some back injuries in the past. Fortunately, I've felt good for a long time now, and by now it's just a habit." --Field Level Media
