‘Enjoy this moment': Pogacar fights off fatigue to savour Tour de France glory
Tadej Pogacar admitted that his own creeping fatigue was perhaps his biggest threat during the Tour de France this year, particularly after he had built a four-minute lead on Jonas Vingegaard following the race's three stages in the Pyrenees. Speaking in a brief press conference after his fourth Tour win, Pogacar said: 'We were in the lead and we had quite a big gap, so we were comfortably in yellow, but yeah, I was tired in the last week. 'For now, I don't want to speak about what went wrong,' he added, 'but for now I want to enjoy this moment with the yellow jersey in Paris.' Although his rivalry with Vingegaard was less intense during this year's Tour than it has been in the past, Pogacar admitted that the pair now have renewed respect for each other. 'Jonas opened up a bit more this year,' he said. 'He comes [over] and we talk about stuff, general stuff. I quite like the guy and I like to race against him. 'Today we were speaking at the start line about how incredible it was, the last five years, battling each other and pushing each other to the next level. We spoke about how we can be privileged to have this competition between each other and how it makes us grow even more.' Vingegaard admitted that his own performance had not been as consistent as he had hoped. 'I can agree that on some stages I have had the highest level that I have ever had,' he said, 'and in other stages I have had the lowest level for many years for me. 'It was a bit more that I had a few bad days. I am better than I ever have been, but it's shown me that I can still have a few bad days.' If he had suffered from ennui, Pogacar managed to hide it for most of the race and certainly in the final stage in Paris, even if his visible weariness during the Alpine stages had drawn criticism from some parts of the French media. 'Burnouts happen in a lot of sports, mental burnout, physical burnout,' he said. 'I think cyclists are a bit too obsessed with training. We always try the hardest and everybody wants to train more and more. 'You see riders with fatigue too early in the season, the team needs you to race, race, race and you keep going and you never really recover. Burnouts happen all the time and it can happen to me as well.' While the four-time champion is looking ahead to a rumoured Grand Depart in Slovenia in 2029, his rival is already turning his attention to trying to win this year's Vuelta a España, the final Grand Tour of the year and one that Pogacar seems unlikely to ride. 'I think first of all, I will do an easy week and from there, you can start training again,' Vingegaard said. 'It's more when you feel fresh and able to train again. There's not a lot of time, but I did it two years ago and it worked out pretty well.'

San Francisco 49ers star Tarron Jackson rushed to the hospital after 'scary' collapse
San Francisco defensive lineman Tarron Jackson was taken to the hospital after collapsing on the field during 49ers training camp. The 27-year-old went down after he was blocked on a play late in practice. He remained on the ground for several minutes before being taken off on a stretcher. An ambulance then rushed Jackson to the hospital but coach Kyle Shanahan later revealed that he was conscious, able to communicate and feel all his extremities. 'So hopefully, we cleared the real scary stuff, and hopefully we´ll get some good news on his neck,' Shanahan said. The 49ers were able to finish practice after Jackson was taken off the field. 'It's always hard... especially when guys watch that,' Shanahan said. 'We were close to him, so we could hear him talking, we could see everything moving, so I just told the guys that, which I think eases them up a little bit for the biggest fears and asked them if they're OK to continue to go. They all yelled "yes," and then we finished our last period and a half.' The 27-year-old Jackson was a sixth-round pick by Philadelphia in 2021 and has played 24 career games for the Eagles and Carolina. He signed with San Francisco in the offseason. The 49ers activated second-year receiver Ricky Pearsall from the physically unable to perform list earlier in the day and he practiced for the first time this summer. 'It was nice,' Shanahan said. 'His rep count was really low. I think he got like eight reps today, but we´ll see how he did with recovery and stuff. But I didn´t hear any complaints and good first day back.' Pearsall had been out since injuring his hamstring during the offseason program. The Niners are counting on a big season from the 2024 first-round pick after trading away Deebo Samuel and with Brandon Aiyuk expected to miss the start of the season recovering from knee surgery. Pearsall had a difficult rookie season, missing almost all of camp with injuries to his hamstring and shoulder and then sitting out the first half of the season after being shot in a robbery attempt in San Francisco. Pearsall returned in Week 7 and finished the season with 31 catches for 400 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games. Pearsall had a strong finish to the season with 14 catches for 210 yards and two touchdowns in the final two games. Cornerback Renardo Green was out after hurting his hamstring in practice on Friday. Shanahan said that he will likely miss a couple of weeks but could return the week of Aug. 11 when the Niners prepare for their second exhibition game against the Raiders. Veteran cornerback Eli Apple agreed to a deal with San Francisco on Sunday, according to his agency Universal Sports Management. The 29-year-old Apple has played 102 games, including four with the Chargers last season. Receiver Jacob Cowing has a similar timeline to Green after hurting his hamstring on the first day of practice last Wednesday. Receiver Jauan Jennings left practice early with a calf injury but quarterback Brock Purdy returned to practice Sunday after missing a session on Friday for personal reasons. 'Brock had some family stuff yesterday, all good news,' Shanahan said. 'I'm sure he'll tell you guys when he talks to you guys next. But Brock was back and didn't miss a beat and it was a good day off for him.'

Caitlin Clark's 'realistic' return date revealed as more worrying details emerge over WNBA star's injury
Caitlin Clark is expected to be out for a few more weeks as the WNBA superstar continues to struggle with injury. That is according to the latest reports on the Indiana Fever icon, who has sat out four consecutive games. She has now missed a total of 13 games this season. On Sunday, Clark was again absent for Indiana's clash with the Chicago Sky as she battles a groin problem picked up against the Connecticut Sun on July 15. Fever coach Stephanie White recently said that Clark is 'day-to-day' but, on Sunday, ESPN reported that the 23-year-old may not be back on the court until mid-August. 'She did see a specialist last week and no additional injury was found in that exam and scans,' Holly Rowe said on the Fever-Sky broadcast. 'Stephanie White did tell us that they will be even more cautious in their approach to her return to play this time.' Clark did not miss a single game at Iowa or during her rookie year in the WNBA but this is the latest in a number of issues for the 23-year-old. 'Last time when she came back from injury, she didn't get any practice time (or) any time to ramp up her conditioning,' Rowe explained. 'This time, they're going to make sure she has time and practices to get rhythm and time with her teammates. 'As you look at their schedule, the third week in August provides a few more practice days where that seems like it's realistic. While she does remain day-to-day, that's seems like a better timetable for a possible Caitlin Clark return.' Indiana faces five games over the next 11 days before their busy schedule eases up slightly, with only one game between August 16 and August 22. Clark is still traveling with the Fever and she was on the sidelines for Sunday's 93-78 win against the Sky. Angel Reese also missed the game after suffering a back injury.
