The MOST inspirational Springboks comeback story!

The Springboks had many heroes on the field against France in the 2023 RWC quarter-final, but one man in particular had the match of his life.
The world champions' 29-28 win over France on Sunday was one of the great rugby matches in modern history, or the whole of history for that matter. Antoine Dupont, the French skipper who fractured his cheek earlier in the tournament, produced a scintillating individual display, but it wasn't enough to steer the hosts into the semifinals. A host of Springboks produced stirring displays of their own, not least of which was the battered and bloodied Jesse Kriel.
For a long time, Jesse Kriel was criticised for his performances in a Springbok jersey. It's difficult to be the understudy to a player of Lukhanyo Am's calibre, but Am's injury opened the door for Kriel, and the Canon Eagles centre took his opportunity. He was one of the unsung heroes for Jacques Nienaber's team in 2023, and that display against France was likely the best of his career. Jesse Kriel. Image via Instagram @jessekriel15

'Kaizer Chiefs bosses signed me, not the coach'

Most Betway Premiership supporters will remember Gordon Gilbert impressing in the Kaizer Chiefs backline with unique speed and aggression. Why was it short-lived? The 42-year-old from Emalahleni, Mpumalanga, has claimed that the former Kaizer Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral used him to make a point to his bosses. Gilbert later moved on to Moroka Swallows and then Mpumalanga Black Aces before a relatively early retirement at the age of 29 after the 2010/2011 season. Most Kaizer Chiefs supporters will probably tell you Gilbert was one of the most technical and quick central defenders the club has had. But according to Gilbert, the club's former coach, Ertugral, was not moved. 'I loved the Chiefs supporters, I loved the team, and I loved the management, everything about Chiefs I loved, it was unbelievable,' Gilbert told KickOff. 'I was at a disadvantage, though; in my first game, I was a man of the match, and in my second game, I got dropped. 'If I'm to be brutally honest with you, Muhsin Ertugral was very unhappy that the Motaungs signed me without his permission. So they signed me he did not sign me. I felt that all the time he tried to make an example out of me by saying to the owners 'Don't sign players on my behalf.' 'So from Day one, he never gave me a fair opportunity, so if anything was to change, I would love to play for Kaizer Chiefs under another manager,' Gilbert concluded. Orlando Pirates legend lists three names for the armband

A new face will own the Orlando Pirates captain's armband next season. Innocent Maela said goodbye to the club after wearing the skipper's band for three seasons. The club's longest-serving former captain, Lucky Lekgwathi, has offered three candidates for consideration before next season. The names are the central defensive duo of Tapelo Xoki, Nkosinathi Sibisi and Makhehleni Makhaula in Orlando Pirates' central midfield. The sensational teenager, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, earned a special mention. Player of the Season offers himself to Chiefs and Pirates Orlando Pirates team against Stellenbosch FC at the Orlando Stadium. I think he can take the role,' the Orlando Pirates legend told Soccer Laduma . 'Another one is Sibisi, who also did a great job whenever he was captain. I think there is room for improvement for both Xoki and Sibisi,' Lekgwathi added. 'The third option for me, with his experience, is Makhaula. He was once the captain of AmaZulu, and I think he can do the job. I believe he can lead the team. 'But watch the space. In future, Mbokazi is my future. One day is one day,' Lekgwathi concluded. Player of the Season offers himself to Chiefs and Pirates

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have been sent the first come-and-get-me note of this winter. It is from the FNB Botswana Premier League Top goal-scorer and Player of the Season, Jean Lwamba. The Tafic FC star, born in the Democratic Republic of Congo 22 years ago, took the golden boot award after 15 goals in the 2024/25 season. Speaking via KickOff, Lwamba believes he can repeat the same feats in the colours of Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates in the Betway Premiership next season. 'Sundowns treated him very well' – Agent 'Whoever is interested will have to just talk to my agent and my club, I play centre-forward, right-winger, and left-winger,' Lwamba told KickOff. 'I can't talk too much about myself though, because I know myself and what I can do. I can make it anywhere in South Africa, even at Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, I can play. Kaizer Chiefs transfer news: Tau among targets from abroad 'But as a football player I prefer to do my talking on the pitch. I can't promise how many goals I can score in the PSL per season, but give me a chance you will see. I'm ready,' Lwamba concluded.
