Orlando Pirates legend lists three names for the armband
A new face will own the Orlando Pirates captain's armband next season. Innocent Maela said goodbye to the club after wearing the skipper's band for three seasons.
The club's longest-serving former captain, Lucky Lekgwathi, has offered three candidates for consideration before next season.
The names are the central defensive duo of Tapelo Xoki, Nkosinathi Sibisi and Makhehleni Makhaula in Orlando Pirates' central midfield.
The sensational teenager, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, earned a special mention.

'Sundowns treated him very well' – Agent
'I think Tapelo has done well in the team, and he led the team well whenever he wore the armband. I think he can take the role,' the Orlando Pirates legend told Soccer Laduma . 'Another one is Sibisi, who also did a great job whenever he was captain. I think there is room for improvement for both Xoki and Sibisi,' Lekgwathi added.
'The third option for me, with his experience, is Makhaula. He was once the captain of AmaZulu, and I think he can do the job. I believe he can lead the team.
'But watch the space. In future, Mbokazi is my future. One day is one day,' Lekgwathi concluded.

Satisfied Broos to start with changed Bafana XI against Mozambique
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos was impressed with the new face in their 0-0 friendly draw against Tanzania at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday, revealing he will field a different team when South host Mozambique at the same venue on Tuesday (7.30pm). Bafana's starting XI against Tanzania had several debutants, including the Orlando Pirates duo of Deano van Rooyen and Simphiwe Selepe, Ashley Cupido of Stellenbosch FC, Tshepang Moremi of AmaZulu and Khulumani Ndamane of TS Galaxy, who was voted man-of-the-match. "As far as I can remember, there were no chances for Tanzania. I couldn't ask for more, I am happy with the performance of some players,' Broos said. The Bafana coach suggested there was room for improvement for some of the players. He stressed, though, he was not going to put be critical on anyone as the purpose of this month's friendlies was to introduce players to the national team in a non-pressure environment.

Keshav Maharaj: Turning past disappointments into World Test Championship triumph
Proteas spinner Keshav Maharaj hope they can join the South African cricket pantheon of greats with a win over Australia in the World Test Championship final. Image: Rodger Bosch / AFP As a key player who stars in all formats, Keshav Maharaj has had his fair share of heartbreak in Proteas colours over the last few years. The left-arm spinner was part of the side that finished runners-up at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2024, while the Proteas also reached the semi-finals of both the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 and ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Those near misses still sting, as the South African cricket side continue to be regarded as nearly men. But, ahead of the World Test Championship (WTC) final, Maharaj wants them to channel that heartbreak into vibes ahead of Wednesday morning's first day at the historic Lord's Cricket Ground in London. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad Loading 'In previous attempts, no one expected us to reach the knockout phases of any competition, but we have reached two semi-finals and two finals,' Maharaj told the ICC. 'Hopefully through all those misses we come right in this one. There is a lot of inspiration we can draw from in the brand of cricket we have played in the last three or four years. 'If we run with it and stay true to it, hopefully this is our opportunity to finally raise that most-coveted trophy that has eluded us for a number of years.' This Test team has been up for every fight thus far, except in New Zealand in January 2024 when a virtual third-string Proteas team got hammered while the top guns were playing in the SA20. The Proteas won their last seven Test matches to qualify for the final by playing some aggressive cricket and with everybody in the team making big contributions. Compared to the last Proteas side that held the ICC Test Championship mace at Lord's in 2012, Shukri Conrad's team do not have many legendary names such as Jacques Kallis, Dale Steyn and Graeme Smith. What they do have is a strong team culture second to none, and beating Australia in the WTC final will surely see their names also stand alongside some of the greats of the South African game. 'I remember watching that when they lifted the mace,' Maharaj said. 'We know that apart from doing it for us, we want to honour the legends of the past and hopefully we will one day be seen in the same calibre and light to win such a coveted title and hold the Test mace. 'When we started the journey two years ago, a lot of people didn't think we'd be in this situation, but with each and every series we grow more and more,' added Maharaj. 'Our blend of youth and experience complements each other really nicely, and we find ourselves competing for another trophy. 'The boys have put in a lot of hard work. The excitement is building as we edge closer and it's now about letting it sink in and soaking up the occasion to allow us to play with freedom.'

Five players that can win Kaizer Chiefs the league next season
Kaizer Chiefs have not won the league since the 2014/15 season under Stuart Baxter. The Soweto giants came close in 2019/20 season but lost out to Mamelodi Sundowns on the last day of the season. Since then, Amakhosi have struggled in the Betway Premiership, failing to finish in the top 8 for two consecutive season. Under Nasreddine Nabi, Amakhosi claimed the Nedbank Cup title, which was their only silverware in 10 years. With the pre-season only a few weeks away, Chiefs need to sign quality players to compete for top honours. With the current squad, Chiefs won't get close to their fifth PSL title. Nabi needs to bring at least five top players to the team if they are to compete for big titles. Here are five players that Kaizer Chiefs must sign to compete for the league: Feisal Salum The Tanzanian star can inject life into the Amakhosi's midfield. He can score and assist which is something the club has lacked from their midfielders. Fiston Mayele The Congolese striker is unlikely to join the Soweto giants given his price tag and wages. He recently won the CAF Champions League with Pyramids making his a desireable option for Middle East teams. If Chiefs could sign Mayele, their goalscoring woes won't end. Oswin Appollis The Polokwane City could be on his way to Naturena if all goes well. He was not in Polokwane City's final match of the season which raised eyebrows. At 23, the speedy winger could be a long term investment for Kaizer Chiefs epecially if they are looking to win the league. Fawaaz Basadien The Bafana Bafana left-back has been linked to Amakhosi for almost two years. With Miguel Inacio, Rushwin Dortley and Basadien at the back, Chiefs will no doubt solve their defensive problems having leaked the third most goals last campaign. Monnapule Saleng Saleng won five trophies with Pirates but will he win the league if he joined Kaizer Chiefs? the attacker has been rumoured with a move to Naturena in recent weeks after getting sidelined by the Buccaneers for months.
