Nutritionist says 'bad for us' item is actually a superfood and can even go in the bath

We all know that adding too much salt to our food, although tasty, is often bad for us. However, the impact the type of salt has on our health is usually misunderstood or overlooked. One nutritionist has shared her top tip that can improve the nutritional impact of the seasoning and make you feel stronger in the process.
Certified nutritionist and influencer, Claire Sorlie, has shared her best superfoods with Celtic sea salt included in the list of healthy swaps. Despite its name, the salt is mainly harvested in the coastal areas of Brittany in France as well as some regions of Portugal.
Known as 'sel gris' or grey salt, it is a type of sea salt that has been hand-harvested from coastal areas and is less processed than other salts. Importantly for your health, making the switch can easily add minerals including magnesium, calcium, potassium, zinc, and iron to your diet.

The seasoning can be especially beneficial for people who partake in endurance sports or intense exercise such as running and cycling. The salt is high in magnesium that can help with muscle function and also help replenish electrolytes that may have been lost in your sweat.
The naturally occurring electrolytes can be especially beneficial for hydrating. Surprisingly for it being salt, many athletes include Celtic sea salt in their water as it allows them to drink more.
For anyone suffering from muscle soreness after a workout not only can it help you by being on your food, but it can also have benefits from direct contact with your skin. Adding the salt into hot bath water can allow the minerals to permeate your skin and into your muscles which can help them relax and recover more easily.
The flakes also are high in iron allowing for generally higher energy levels. The mineral helps to transport oxygen around your blood more easily allowing your organ's energy to improve. It also helps your blood to transport other nutrients to the different areas of your body such as your brain - keeping you more awake.

Tens of thousands of visitors due to attend a UK-wide open farm day this weekend have been warned about a parasitic infection that causes serious gastrointestinal illness. There were 17 outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis linked to farms in England and Wales in 2024 and an outbreak in south Wales earlier this year has seen dozens of people fall ill. According to inspection reports from the past five years - released to the BBC under the Freedom of Information Act - some farms repeatedly ignored health inspectors' advice and allowed children to handle sick animals in filthy pens. The organisers of Open Farm Sunday, which sees 190,000 visitors, said its farms have high health and safety standards. Cryptosporidium can cause severe stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea and is spread through direct contact with animals or touching surfaces that have animal faeces on them. The young, pregnant women and those with health conditions which affect their immune system can be particularly vulnerable. Public Health Wales said individual cases of cryptosporidiosis linked to visits to Cowbridge Farm Shop at Marlborough Grange Farm in Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan, this spring had now risen to 89 people. In England, one of those affected after a farm visit was Emily Fryer's six-year-old son Isaac. He was admitted to hospital after falling ill following a visit to Gannow Farm in Worcestershire last year. Mrs Fryer told the BBC: "He didn't eat or drink for about five days. He just slept all the time. His sugars were dangerously low and they admitted him. "Obviously, I was really worried then. Because he is autistic and non-verbal, we didn't really know how we could help him." Mrs Fryer said the family had taken hygiene seriously when they visited the farm and had washed their hands thoroughly using facilities provided on site. A year earlier the farm had been issued with a prohibition notice by the Health and Safety Executive because it was failing to prevent or control the risk of exposure to cryptosporidium. Those issues were dealt with and the farm was licensed to show animals to the public in 2024. Mrs Fryer said she was disappointed that the farm had been allowed to reopen to visitors. "I just think it's awful," she said. The owners of the farm, which has now stopped its open days, declined to comment when approached by the BBC but have previously said they had "made every precaution possible" to prevent an outbreak. Many farms across the UK have had to diversify their businesses over recent years to boost their profitability, with public open days, petting farms and play barns becoming an important source of income. But inspection reports released to the BBC under the Freedom Information Act by the UK's national cryptosporidium reference unit show that a small number of farms are not meeting health and safety standards - and, in extreme cases, are ignoring warnings from inspectors. On one farm in Wales, which was linked to a number of outbreaks, inspectors found sick animals kept on display and a lack of handwashing facilities, risk assessments and staff training. According to reports, the inspectors told the farm those failings were "consistent with those identified previously. This indicates you are failing to maintain the required improvements from one season to the next". Another farm visited in 2023 had also failed to implement recommendations from a previous inspection, which led to another outbreak of cryptosporidiosis, while another farm, due to host a school visit a few days after inspection, was found to be failing. "Comparing current visit to last year found the conditions worse," the report noted. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said the 16 outbreaks in England last year was a provisional figure and data analysis due to be published later in the month may see that rise. Both Public Health Wales and the UKHSA have warned the estimated 190,000 visitors who will be visiting the 250 farms taking part in Open Farm Sunday this weekend to make sure they take basic hygiene measures. Jo Hatton, an education specialist for organisers of the open farm event LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), said all its participating farmers were given advice and training on how best to keep visitors safe. "We are supporting farmers to open their farms and with their risk assessments. We are on the phone with farmers checking in with them throughout the planning process and helping them to understand how to ensure that that visit goes smoothly and everyone goes home happy and healthy," she explained. One farm manager who says he is ensuring the highest health and safety standards for visitors on Sunday is Andy Bason, who will be welcoming around 2,000 visitors onto Newhouse Farm, Alresford, Hampshire. He said LEAF's health and safety training had "really opened my eyes to what's needed to host this kind of event". "With the kind of numbers we see, it is a huge task. We want everyone to come here, have a great day and go home safe without any illness," he explained. The National Farmers' Union (NFU) said that the health and safety of all visitors to farms was "taken extremely seriously". The death of a 15-week-old baby who lived in a Camden flat, managed by housing association Notting Hill Genesis, led to a protest outside its headquarters on Friday. Akram Mohammed died in February and his parents believe damp and mould contributed to their son's death. They said "no one helped" from the housing association, after repeated requests for repairs. Patrick Franco from the organisation said: "We know this is a complex situation and will continue working with the relevant authorities as they conduct their investigations." An inquest, opened by St Pancras Coroner's Court, into the baby's death has been adjourned and is due to conclude later this year. Akram's mother, Aiat Mohammed, described her son as a "happy, playful baby". His father, Abdushafi, says he hoped for him to become a doctor. In late February, their baby son started struggling to breathe. His father took him in his arms and ran to hospital. Mrs Mohammed said: "I was trying to tell myself everything is going to be OK. I was trying to calm myself. "There were more than eight doctors and more than five nurses around him." Akram's parents believe "longstanding mould and damp" in their flat contributed to their son's death. Akram's father said: "The house was mouldy and damp and I tried to explain to them many times but nobody helped." The coroner has yet to conclude the cause of death. Paperwork seen by the BBC shows repeated requests from the family, and the charity the Pillion Trust, to address damp and mould in the flat. After the family launched a complaint in 2024 to the housing association, Notting Hill Genesis admitted their "standards have fallen for not being more responsive" and offered £175 in compensation for a late response, lack of communication and for being chased on damp and mould repairs. Photos taken by the family's legal team a week after Akram's death show mould and damp present in the one-bedroom home. Mrs Mohammed said Akram struggled with the conditions. "If they just fixed those issues maybe he had a chance to live," she said. "When he was just months old I started to notice he had difficulty breathing. He could (would) breathe very, very loudly. But eventually the problems got bigger and bigger." She added: "Nobody would stay there. Even for a minute. You couldn't breathe there. You would feel it in the air. The air was mouldy." The family lawyer Mark McGhee said they have been told by the coroner's officer the pathology report stated the medical cause of death was acute pneumonia due to a late-onset Group B Strep infection and dilated cardiomyopathy, a type of heart muscle disease. The BBC has not independently seen the document. Akram's mother said: "We all know a person with pneumonia can't live in a mouldy house." The family's solicitors launched a disrepair claim against Notting Hill Genesis, and an independent survey of the flat, carried out by TLB Services found the housing association failed in its duty to ensure the property was "fit for human habitation". It found mould in every room and "defective" extractor fans in the kitchen and bathroom were "causing excessive airborne moisture". The survey advised £3,055 of repairs to be carried out, including washing the mould and fixing the extractor fans. Notting Hill Genesis said they conducted a thorough mould wash following reports of damp and mould in April 2024, which removed mould from the home. It added, in October 2024, the month prior to Akram's birth, Mr and Mrs Mohammed reported further issues of damp and mould, which the housing association was working to resolve. Mrs Mohammed said: "I would say my baby's death was avoidable. "All we wanted was a healthy environment to live [in]." Akram's parents said they have been supported by the school, of their two other children, and charities since their son's death. Mr Franco, the chief executive of Notting Hill Genesis, added: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Akram Mohammed. "We will continue to support the family in any way we can during this difficult time. "No determination has been made by HM Coroner as to the cause of Akram's death, and it would therefore be inappropriate to comment further or to speculate at this time." A Camden Council spokesperson said: "Akram's death is a tragedy and our thoughts are with his family at what is a very sad time. "We have been in regular contact with Notting Hill Genesis who assure us they are working to identify a suitable home for the family." A long-standing claim (archived) about 15 doctors who helped save a 67-year-old woman who suffered a heart attack on a plane circulated in May 2025. One Facebook user wrote: On a flight to Florida a 67 year old woman had a heart attack. The cabin crew asked if there was a doctor on the plane. 15 people stood up. They were all cardiologists on their way to a conference. Needless to say she survived. Though the claim is not new (archived), it circulated in recent years on Facebook (archived), Threads (archived), Bluesky (archived) and X (archived). The story, in all its "right place at the right time" magic, is true. Dorothy Fletcher was 67 years old when she suffered a heart attack while flying to Orlando, Florida, on Nov. 7, 2003. Also on that plane: several doctors headed to a Heart Association conference in the Florida city. Fletcher, originally from Liverpool in England, gave her account of events to the BBC, which ran an article (archived) about the incident in early 2004. Other (archived) British (archived) and American (archived) news media also reported on the incident at the time. That article said Fletcher was traveling to attend her daughter Christine's wedding when she fell ill. We reached out to a company registered in Christine's name where an employee confirmed that Christine was Fletcher's daughter and that Fletcher was still alive and well in April 2025. We could not reach Christine directly for this story. According to the BBC, Fletcher told BBC Breakfast she realized she was having a heart attack while on the plane but was comforted by the number of doctors who sprang to her aid: I only realised when they said is there a doctor on board and all the lights above their heads began lighting up and they all came running towards me. I can't believe there were so many doctors - never mind cardiologists - on a plane. It was so frightening. I had never experienced a heart attack. But to see so many people helping me took the fright away. The article said that Fletcher's flight landed in North Carolina instead of Florida, where Fletcher spent five days in the hospital before attending her daughter's wedding. Fletcher told the BBC she didn't get the names of any of the doctors and only knew they were traveling to Orlando for a conference. "I wish I could thank them but I have no idea who they were other than that they were going to a conference in Orlando," Fletcher said in 2004. Though we did not manage to track down any of the doctors who helped Fletcher, we did confirm with the American Heart Association that it held an event for cardiologists in Orlando around the time Fletcher fell ill. Suzanne Grant, the national VP for media relations at the AHA, said: We can confirm that the American Heart Association held its annual Scientific Session in Orlando, Florida, from November 9-12, 2003. Thousands and thousands of cardiologists from around the world (10k+ attendees) attend every year.
