The Washington Capitals signed a young forward they got from the back-to-back Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, a young defenseman is getting a fresh start and a couple of Canadian teams re-signed veteran players on Saturday.
Washington signed forward Justin Sourdif for $1.65 million over two years after sending a second-round pick to Florida for the minor leaguer with four games of NHL experience. Sourdif, 23, scored a goal in his lone call-up this past season and had 10 points in 18 games on the Charlotte Checkers' run to the American Hockey League's Calder Cup Finals.

The Capitals are hoping Sourdif, making just over the league minimum at $825,000 annually, fills a hole on their second or third line. There was no room for upward mobility for Sourdif, especially after the Panthers signed playoff MVP Sam Bennett to an eight-year, $64 million contract and could bring back winger Brad Marchand.
While hosting the draft in Los Angeles, the Kings traded 24-year-old D-man Jordan Spence to Ottawa for the 67th pick and Colorado's sixth-rounder in 2026. Buffalo also sent Connor Clifton and a second-round pick to Pittsburgh for Conor Timmins and Isaac Beliveau.
North of the border, the Calgary Flames extended 6-foot-6 Kevin Bahl to a six-year deal worth just over $32 million, while the Winnipeg Jets shored up their blue line depth by giving Haydn Fleury $1.9 million over the next two seasons. Bahl will count $5.35 million against the salary cap through 2030-31.

It's hard to believe nowadays that the legendary 2001-02 Detroit Red Wings roster featured an astounding 10 future Hall of Fame players, a feat that we'll likely never witness again in the modern NHL. Oh, and they were also coached by Scotty Bowman, arguably the greatest head coach in professional sports. That team was nothing short of a juggernaut, and they capped the campaign by winning the 10th Stanley Cup in Red Wings history. There likely weren't many who would have expected young rookie forward Pavel Datsyuk, a fresh-faced rookie who didn't yet speak English, would not only soon be paired on a line with Brett Hull but would eventually have his own Hall of Fame career in Detroit. While stepping into a dressing room filled with some of the sport's most iconic names might have been intimidating for a first-time NHL player, Datsyuk never showed it outwardly. Datsyuk's entrance into a brand new culture was partially aided by the presence of Russian veterans Igor Larionov and Sergei Fedorov, whom he was able to communicate with in his native tongue as he adjusted to life in North America. Datsyuk recently appeared on Larionov's podcast, 'PARI with Larionov', and spoke about his feelings all those years ago on earning a roster spot with the Red Wings in the fall of 2001. "I got to some crazy planet, where another world opened up to me, the hockey world," Datsyuk said. "I could attend a training session, where every training session was like a lesson for me. Datsyuk quickly became a permanent fixture on the Red Wings and soon earned recognition as one of the most gifted and dynamic players in modern NHL history. He was praised as much for his offensive brilliance as for his defensive play, winning the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the league's best defensive forward in three straight seasons. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2024, Datsyuk became the 10th player from the 2001-02 Red Wings roster to be forever enshrined in Toronto. "I ended up with NHL stars on a team where I could learn, I ended up with the guys we were watching," he said. Texas A&M will host elite 2026 4-star SF in early September
With new head basketball coach Bucky McMillan now at the helm, Texas A&M's recruiting efforts have increased significantly this summer concerning the 2026 cycle. So far, four-star small forward Bryson Howard and four-star shooting guard Dakari Spear are two players to watch, as Howard will visit College Station at the end of the month, while Spear placed the Aggies in his top 5 program list. On Sunday, it was revealed that another elite 2026 prospect, four-star small forward Ralph Scott out of the prestigious IMG Academy, will reportedly visit Texas A&M in an official capacity on September 5, followed by OVs to Tennessee and LSU. While the Aggies have yet to land a 2026 prospect, McMillan's success in landing 13 players from the transfer portal, which now includes former Southern Illinois star guard Ali Dibba, is built around relationships, similar to Texas A&M football head coach Mike Elko's recruiting efforts. On the court, Scott possesses an inside and outside game with the size and length to rebound at a high level, but, most importantly, he is an elite athlete who will likely lead a team in scoring at the next level. Scott will also take an official visit to Houston at the end of the month, which is likely Texas A&M's biggest competition outside to Tennessee.
