AEM brings rare-earth-free EV motors to India; partners with Sterling Gtake

In a push to make electric mobility more sustainable and geopolitically independent, UK-based Advanced Electric Machines (AEM) is entering the Indian electric vehicle (EV) space with its rare-earth- and copper-free electric motor technology. The company has partnered with Sterling Tools Limited's EV arm, Sterling Gtake Electro Mobility (SGEM), to localise production and assembly of its traction motors at SGEM's Faridabad facility.
Announced earlier this year, the technology licensing agreement between AEM and SGEM will facilitate the manufacturing of AEM's proprietary High Density Reluctance Motors (HDRM), a new class of traction motors that match the performance of conventional permanent magnet motors but without relying on rare earth elements or copper—two critical materials that are becoming increasingly scarce, expensive, and environmentally problematic.
The move comes at a time when about 85 per cent of EVs globally use rare earth magnets like neodymium and dysprosium in their motors, despite rising environmental and supply chain concerns. AEM's HDRM platform eliminates the need for these elements and instead uses aluminium windings—reducing conductor weight by 60 per cent, cutting material costs by up to 90 per cent, and simplifying recycling at end-of-life. The motors also demonstrate higher power-to-weight ratios and improved energy efficiency across drive cycles, potentially increasing EV range by 12–15 per cent in some cases.
'The reliance on rare earths and copper is neither financially nor environmentally sustainable,' said James Widmer, CEO of AEM. 'With HDRM, we are offering a direct, drop-in alternative to IPM motors that requires no compromise on efficiency or performance.'
AEM's motors are already in commercial use across Europe and Asia, powering electric buses, trucks, and trains. The company has received validation from global Tier 1 suppliers like SAF-Holland and is now in talks with Indian OEMs across commercial and passenger vehicle segments. HDRM units are compatible with existing 3-phase inverters and have been successfully integrated with platforms from Semikron, Sevcon, and Nidec.
Sterling Gtake, AEM's India partner, has already localised components for AEM's first motor platform and aims to expand localisation for additional platforms in the coming quarters. Except for diodes and resolvers, nearly all components can be manufactured domestically, ensuring high domestic value addition (DVA). SGEM's 11-acre campus houses a growing team of over 60 engineers and is equipped with nine dynamometers covering a voltage range of 48V to 1000V and up to 350kW in power.
'India's EV push must also consider long-term material security and environmental impact,' said Jaideep Wadhwa, Managing Director of Sterling Gtake. 'Through this partnership, we're not just assembling motors—we're co-developing a cleaner, more resilient ecosystem for electrification.'
HDRM motors are designed to be cost-effective, scalable across vehicle types—from two- and three-wheelers to heavy-duty commercial vehicles—and ready for high-volume production. Future versions of the technology aim to remove copper entirely, replacing it with AEM's patented aluminium conductor coils that offer superior thermal management and recyclability.
Backed by a $29 million Series A investment in late 2023 and a portfolio of 38 global patents, AEM is positioning itself as a next-generation powertrain player with a focus on sustainability, circular economy, and supply chain diversification. The company operates from the UK's automotive manufacturing hub and is a spinout from Newcastle University, with deep roots in academic and industrial motor innovation.

Record Surge! Mutual funds attract nearly ₹50 lakh crore in 5 years

While Indian equities have been weighed down by substantial US tariffs, modest Q1 earnings, and sustained selling by overseas investors, domestic retail investors have maintained their confidence in the fundamentals of the economy, shrugging off these near-term headwinds as they pump record funds into mutual funds in July. As per the data released by AMFI (Association of Mutual Funds of India) on Monday, August 11, equity fund categories witnessed the highest-ever monthly net inflow of ₹ 42,702 crore, aided by renewed interest in thematic and sectoral schemes and continued inflow into small-cap, mid-cap, and flexi-cap schemes. Besides small- and mid-cap funds, large-cap funds saw net inflows of ₹ 2,125 crore, underscoring retail investors' interest in these schemes amid the sharp market correction in recent months. The monthly net inflow marked the 53rd consecutive month of gains, indicating that investors have been steadily pouring in money since February 2021. Additionally, healthy growth was witnessed in SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) inflow at ₹ 28,464 crore during the month, an increase from ₹ 27,269 crore in June. These record inflows have helped cushion the Indian stock market against the impact of sharp overseas investor outflows. Apart from equity funds, debt funds recorded a strong net inflow of ₹ 1.06 lakh crore in July, as investors diversified away from bank fixed deposits, which have turned less attractive following multiple RBI rate cuts. Amid strong inflows into both equity and debt, the total assets under management (AUM) of mutual fund industry crossed ₹ 75 lakh crore for the first time in July, reaching ₹ 75.35 lakh crore. Just half a decade ago, the mutual fund industry's AUM stood was at ₹ 27.11 lakh crore, indicating an addition of ₹ 48.24 lakh crore in only five years, AMFI data showed. Looking further back, the AUM of the Indian mutual fund industry has increased more than sixfold in the past 10 years. The industry first crossed the milestone of ₹ 10 lakh crore in May 2014, and in just about three years, the AUM more than doubled to ₹ 20 lakh crore by August 2017. The AUM crossed ₹ 30 lakh crore in November 2020 and has since tripled. Meanwhile, equity mutual fund AUM has surged from ₹ 7.37 lakh crore to ₹ 33.27 lakh crore in the last five years, a remarkable growth of 351% and it now accounts 46% of the overall mutual fund industry's AUM. Retail investors have been actively shifting their savings from traditional bank deposits to equities in recent years, aiming to participate in India's growth story, with the majority opting for the mutual fund route to gain ownership in listed companies. This participation has not only broadened the investor base but also provided a strong foundation for the market, encouraging many companies to raise funds through the stock market to capitalize on ongoing domestic demand. This process has expanded the overall size of the Indian stock market, with India becoming fourth largest stock market globally. According to market experts, institutional inflows into the Indian stock market are expected to remain strong through the rest of 2025, led by higher participation from the retail segment, higher understanding of market volatility, and rising investment discipline, along with incrementally higher inflow from B-30 cities, said domestic brokerage firm InCred Equities. "We remain optimistic over the mid- to long-term horizon amid improving geographic penetration as well as the rising popularity of mutual fund schemes, mainly among the young and mid-income investors," said InCred. India expands Southeast Asia defence footprint with new joint venture in Philippines

According to a joint statement issued Monday, the proposed JVC will be headquartered in the Philippines and will manufacture, assemble and distribute SMPP's defence products tailored to support the Philippines government's Self-Reliant Defence Posture (SRDP) initiative. Under the agreement, SMPP will supply its proven, 'Made-in-India' technology along with manufacturing and quality assurance systems, while ADFC will manage local operations, from recruitment to skill development, with an aim to eventually establish a Filipino-led manufacturing and research capability. The agreement was finalised during Philippines' President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr's first state visit to India earlier this month, which marked the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. New Delhi: Delhi-based defence equipment manufacturer SMPP Limited and the Philippines' Asia Defence and Firepower Corporation (ADFC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a strategic joint venture corporation (JVC) in the Philippines. SMPP, which produces ammunition components, bulletproof jackets, ballistic helmets and armour kits for vehicles and aircraft, has been a supplier to the Indian armed forces for over a decade. Last month, the company announced an order worth more than Rs 300 crore under emergency provisions, covering the supply of 27,700 bulletproof jackets and 11,700 advanced ballistic helmets to the Indian Army. Meanwhile, ADFC operates primarily as a Filipino defence integrator and developer, partnering with international manufacturers to localise production and build domestic manufacturing capability. 'This joint venture represents the best of Indian defence innovation meeting the needs of a friendly partner nation,' said SMPP CEO Ashish Kansal. 'By sharing our proven technology and know-how, we're enabling the Philippines to build a resilient, self-reliant defence ecosystem.' The JVC will be majority-owned—at least 60 percent—by Filipino stakeholders, in accordance with local ownership regulations, the statement said. This arrangement, it added, ensures compliance with Philippine law and also makes the venture eligible for substantial benefits under the country's Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises (CREATE) Act. These incentives include multi-year tax holidays, duty-free import of capital equipment and expedited government approvals. The statement further noted that, by qualifying as a locally incorporated defence manufacturer, the JVC can take advantage of provisions that allow the Department of National Defence to award contracts directly, without the need for public bidding, to meet urgent or strategic requirements. During Marcos's visit, the two countries announced a strategic partnership with defence collaboration at its core and voiced concerns over 'coercive and aggressive actions' in the South China Sea. Manila is also the first to procure the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system from India, signing a $375 million contract in January 2022 for three shore-based batteries. The deal included training for operators and an integrated logistics support package, with the first battery delivered in April 2024 and the second in April 2025. The joint venture also aligns with the government's push to expand India's defence manufacturing footprint into Southeast Asia.
