Chris Morris looks forward to SA20 Season 4 Player Auction. With a USD 7.4 million purse, 84 slots are open. Morris names Kwena Mphaka and Dewald Brevis as top picks.
With the SA20 Season 4 Player Auction just around the corner, former Proteas all-rounder Chris Morris believes this year's dynamics will make for fascinating viewing. The six franchises will have a combined purse of USD 7.4 million to fill 84 slots and complete their 19-player squads — making this the biggest SA20 auction since the league's inception in 2022.
Speaking to SuperSport ahead of the Season 4 auction, Morris asserted that the likes of Kwena Maphaka and Dewald Brevis will attract big bucks. Both youngsters have been phenomenal in the ongoing bilateral series against Australia.
Brevis smashed a scintillating hundred in the second T20I in Darwin and is currently the second-highest run-getter of the series. Maphaka, on the other hand, is leading the wicket charts with seven scalps in 2 matches. He returned 4/20 in the first T20I, becoming the youngest bowler to pick a four-wicket haul in the shortest format of the game.
'The auction is always exciting, no matter the tournament, but SA20 is the big one, with most of the players back in the pool. There have been a lot of retentions and several wild cards picked up, so it will be interesting to see how the teams go about building their squads," Morris said.
'I think Kwena Maphaka is going to be at the centre of a bidding frenzy. Dewald Brevis is another, given he hasn't been retained. Rassie van der Dussen, with his experience, could also be in demand. Personally, I always look out for the player who ends up going for a surprisingly high price — the buy of the tournament that no one saw coming. For me, Delano Potgieter could be that player."
'He's been successful in SA20, has done well for MI Cape Town, and is a proven performer in domestic cricket. He covers multiple roles and adds great balance to a squad — the kind of player I'd sign straight away," Morris added.
The deadline for player registrations, both local and overseas, is fast approaching, with the cut-off set for Monday, August 18, 2025, at 20:30 IST.

R Ashwin exposes CSK, claims team paid Dewald Brevis under the table in IPL 2025

Chennai Super Kings paid Dewald Brevis under the table to sign him as a replacement player in Indian Premier League 2025, claimed Ravichandran Ashwin in his latest YouTube video. Speaking about the young South African cricketer, who was signed as a replacement for injured pacer Gurjapneet Singh, he came to CSK for the amount of Rs 2.2 on his YouTube channel, claimed that a lot of franchises wanted to sign Brevis as a replacement, but CSK got the job done by paying the player more money after intense negotiations with his argued that players like Brevis understand that they will get more than their base price at the auctions and hold the negotiation power. "I will tell you something. About Brevis. He had a great time last IPL with CSK. In fact, a few teams were talking to him. A few teams left him because of the price. When he was supposed to be signed as a replacement, he was supposed to be signed at the base price. But what happens is you talk to the agents and the player will say, if you give me X amount extra, I will come," R Ashwin said on his YouTube video."That happens because the player knows if he is released next season, he will go for good money. So his concept was that, you pay me good money now else I will go for more next year. And CSK were ready to pay him, hence he came. In the back half, the CSK combination was strong. They will go with Rs 30 crore in IPL 2026 mini auction," he was signed by CSK on April 18, midway through the IPL 2024 season. Chennai were struggling with their batting line-up in the tournament and desperately needed to bring in new players. The team signed Ayush Mhatre and Brevis as replacements and reaped the rewards in the final few games of the season."Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed South Africa's Dewald Brevis as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh for the remainder of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025... Brevis was previously part of Mumbai Indians (MI), where he played 10 matches. He will join CSK for INR 2.2 crore," a statement from IPL had said back in lit up in the IPL 2024, hitting 225 runs from 6 matches. He scored 2 half-centuries and batted at a strike rate of Paying Dewald Brevis Extra Unethical? The Indian Premier League has a robust auction system where the teams are given a set budget to make their squad. To preserve parity among the sides, the team needs to hit a minimum number of players in their squad. The main problem with the under-the-table deals is that it defeats the whole purpose of having a team in a set budget, which in this case is Rs 120 Ashwin is correct, then teams who deal in under-the-table negotiations hold the advantage at the auction table because they sign players for less money than what their market value is expected to Brevis's case, CSK paid Rs 2.2 crore officially, but the original sum of money could be much higher than that. However, this becomes a completely different story if other teams employ the same tactics with other players. In any case, Ashwin's claims open up gaps in the franchise model, which perhaps should be looked into by the BCCI.- EndsMust Watch
