The skinny:
Coming back from a shoulder injury that limited him to four games as a rookie,
'You can talk about him however you want. All you have to do is turn on the tape,' former Patriots cornerbacks coach Mike Pellegrino said last season after Gonzalez was one of the more notable Pro Bowl snubs. 'If guys aren't talking about him, that's negligence. I don't know. The guy is playing at a very high level. I don't care what anybody says. That's how I feel about the guy. He's a great competitor.

'The thing that makes him an even better competitor? He doesn't care about any of the awards. He just wants to win.'
Carlton Davis should be a real upgrade across from Christian Gonzalez at cornerback.

This season, the newly acquired Davis will be opposite Gonzalez. A veteran with impressive length, he's a physical presence who thrived in the Lions' man-heavy scheme last year. His background with new defensive coordinator Terrell Williams should also help when it comes to getting up to speed as soon as possible. Look for Jones as the primary slot corner, while Austin, Bolden, Battle, and Dial figure to provide depth and special teams value.
That being said, this position is all about Gonzalez. He's a cornerstone of the defense and is only getting better. Given his rapid ascent in just two seasons, it's feasible to one day imagine him taking his spot alongside some of the great defensive backs in franchise history. As long as he's a Patriot (he could be in line for a colossal payday as early as next offseason) this group will be considered one of the best in the AFC. If he and Davis can stay healthy (the 28-year-old never played a full season), this group could be poised for an impressive 2025.

:
How does this position rate against the rest of the league?
With Gonzalez and Davis, the top of the depth chart is among the best in the league. With a few exceptions (including Jones), the rest of the group is relatively young and unproven, but the ceiling remains high.

Quote of note:
'It's going to be awesome, just learning and playing with [Davis]. I mean, he's played in the Super Bowl, so he's seen at the highest level. He's done it. So that's only not great for me but for the whole room to just have his voice, and just pick up tips from him [any way you] can. He can learn from us, so we can learn from him.'
— Gonzalez, on the opportunity to play opposite Davis.
Biggest story lines:
Can Gonzalez continue his progression into the league's elite? Is Davis, who won the Super Bowl with the Buccaneers in 2020, capable of staying healthy and serving as a mentor for some of the young corners on the roster? Will they miss the leadership skills of Jonathan Jones, a veteran who left for the Commanders in free agency? Do the Patriots have enough depth at the position?

How to watch Australia vs British & Irish Lions Test 2: Live stream rugby for FREE
Australia and the British and Irish Lions face off at the MCG on Saturday in a potential series decider. The tourists hammered the Wallabies last weekend, but the hosts were a far cry from full strength and there have been one or two signs of complacency from Andy Farrell's men. Henry Pollock clearly didn't get the memo, as he's already bigging up this Lions team as the best ever. The Invincibles of 1974, who played 22 games in 10 weeks, winning 21 and drawing the other, may have something to say about that. Australia, remember, only had one game to prepare for the series, and were down several key men for the opener. The Wallabies' first-choice fly-half Noah Lolesio is out of action entirely, which means Tom Lynagh makes his second ever international start at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. However, lock Will Skelton and flanker Rob Valetini have returned to beef up the starting XV. Len Ikitau and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii have pledged to be braver on the ball. Farrell has been picking his centers in pairs, but Garry Ringrose's withdrawal from the XV means Bundee Aki is instead partnering Huw Jones. Along with Ellis Genge and Sione Tuipulotu, Jones was one of the Lions' standout performers in last weekend's 27-19 victory. Genge has been replaced by Andrew Porter, while Tuipulotu misses out through injury. Meanwhile, Owen Farrell has been selected on the bench after not originally being a part of the touring squad. Four-time Olympic gold-medal winner Léon Marchand is back and chasing more world records
Associated Press SINGAPORE (AP) — Léon Marchand's life changed drastically after he won four gold medals a year ago in the Paris Olympics. He was a national hero and had to adjust — particularly when he was at home in France. 'I have to plan things,' Marchand explained Saturday. 'I can't just go on my own in the city and just go get bread.' 'I know how to say 'no' better,' he added. 'It gets a lot more peaceful when I travel out of France.' After swimming under the tutelage of Bob Bowman at the University of Texas at Austin, Marchand is back and will head the field at the swimming world championships — the biggest meet since the Olympics. It's also the stepping stone for many toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics with races in the pool starting Sunday and running through Aug. 3. Marchand, Canada's Summer McIntosh, and Katie Ledecky of the United States were the stars in Paris. They'll be the swimmers to watch in Singapore, joined by a host of Olympians and younger swimmers who hope to be in Los Angeles in three years. The youngest in the field is 12-year-old Yu Zidi of China, who could be a medal contender in her three races with times — and youth — that are shocking global swimming. Marchand will swim only the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medleys and some team relays, opting out of his other gold-medal events in Paris — the 200 butterfly and 200 breaststroke. 'This is a transition year for me, so I wanted to have a lighter schedule than usual," Marchand said. 'I'm really excited to do just less than usual, you know, just to see how far I can go, how fast I can go.' Marchand will be after the 200 IM record set in 2011 by American Ryan Lochte — 1 minute, 54.00 seconds. He'll also try to break his own 400 IM record (4:02.50) set at the 2023 worlds in Fukuoka, Japan. He credits Bowman — famous for coaching Michael Phelps to 23 Olympic gold medals — for pushing him at Texas. Bowman tutors an international cast of swimmers that this fall will also include McIntosh. 'He knows how to be calm in every situation,' Marchand said of Bowman. "I think he taught us throughout the years. He also had a lot of experience on the biggest stage, so I trust him fully.' Without the stress of two extra races, Marchand is ready to make more history. 'Of course I want to break all the records,' he said. "I don't know when that's going to happen' Many are expecting it in Singapore. ___ AP sports: in this topic

NFL Top 100: Jaguars WR Brian Thomas is No. 61, plays Cardinals in Week 12
Jacksonville's Brian Thomas Jr. had the rookie season that people wanted Marvin Harrison Jr. to have. This week, the NFL had its fourth week of revealing players in the "NFL Top 100." This week was about revealed Nos. 61-70. Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride came in at No. 65. On Friday, two Cardinals opponents for 2025 rounded out the week. Coming at No. 61 was Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Brian Thomas, who was a rookie last season. In his rookie campaign, he had the season Cardinals fans hoped that Marvin Harrison Jr. would have had. He had 87 catches for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns. He made the Pro Bowl and was fourth in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting. He was the fourth rookie since the NFL-AFL merger to have at least 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns. Fellow 2024 rookie receiver Malik Nabers of the New York Giants, Thomas' college teammate at LSU, called him "a freak of nature." Teammate Travon Walker, a defensive end, said Thomas is "a good route runner" with "exceptional speed." The Cardinals will have to find a way to slow Thomas in 2025. The Jaguars come to State Farm Stadium in Week 12. He isn't the only Jaguars player in the top 100, as defensive end Josh Hines-Allen made the list just behind Thomas at No. 63.
