J-K deputy CM hopeful of PM announcing restoration of statehood on Independence Day
Addressing a public meeting organized by the National Conference at Tali Morh Bari near here, Choudhary recalled the events of August 5, 2019 and alleged the downgrading of a full-fledged state into two Union territories — J&K and Ladakh — was done arbitrarily.
Jammu, Aug 10 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Sunday expressed hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would announce restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory from the ramparts of Red Fort in his address to the nation on Independence Day.
'Hopefully, the PM shall announce restoration of statehood to J&K on August 15 during his speech to the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort,' he said.
Choudhary also highlighted the achievements of the Omar Abdullah-led government like free travel for women in government-run buses, enhancement of marriage assistance from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000 for Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) families, 200 units of free electricity for AAY households, and increase in pension for senior citizens, widows and physically challenged. National Conference provincial president Rattan Lal Gupta emphasized that the 2024 assembly elections have sent a clear message that the massive mandate given by the people in favour of the party is a rejection of the 2019 move to downgrade the erstwhile state into UT.
He said the democratic mandate must be respected.
Reaffirming the ruling party's commitment to equitable development, he said the National Conference has intensified its mass contact programme across Jammu region.
'We are reaching out to the people to listen to their grievances, ensure timely redressal, and make them aware of the achievements of the Omar Abdullah-led government over the past 10 months,' Gupta said.
He said the party firmly stands with the aspirations of people and will continue to advocate restoration of full statehood and the rights of the citizens of J&K. PTI TAS TAS KVK KVK

Rahul alleges malpractice in voting: Maharashtra Cong to ‘reach out to every household to apprise people of wrongdoings'
Intensifying the nationwide protest against the alleged malpractices in election process launched by party leader Rahul Gandhi, the state Congress on Tuesday said it would appraise people in the state of the 'wrongdoings by reaching out to every household'. 'Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has proved the wrongdoings in the election process of the country. The Election Commission (EC), instead of responding to the queries raised, has served notice to him. The state Congress will further intensify the protest in Maharashtra,' said Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, in-charge of party affairs in Maharashtra. He said the BJP and the Union government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi are finishing democracy. 'Free and fair elections are becoming impossible in the country. We had raised it in the Maharashtra Assembly election when we noticed a big change in voters' choice compared to three months prior to that during the Lok Sabha elections last year,' he added. 'The malpractices seen during the Maharashtra Assembly elections were also witnessed in the Haryana Assembly elections and now it is likely to be repeated in the Bihar elections,' he said. The EC does what the BJP-led Union government says and the BJP is busy defending the EC for the wrongdoings, said Chennithala. 'The state Congress will reach out to every household on the issue of malpractices in elections. We will do a signature campaign and tell the public about vote cheating,' he said. The Congress leader said the Mahayuti government is postponing local body elections deliberately so as to use funds of civic bodies to manage its finances as the government is facing a serious financial crisis due to its wrong schemes. The Congress has not taken any decision on a pre-poll alliance for the forthcoming civic polls, he said, adding the party leaders are still discussing it. Chennithala said the closeness of two cousins MNS chief Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray was not a cause of concern for the Congress. 'MNS is not in our alliance. We don't know anything about the MNS and Sena (UBT) alliance, so we cannot comment on it. We don't have any issues if cousins are coming close but the alliance of their parties will be a political issue. We will discuss if it actually happens,' he said. State Congress chief Harshvardhan Sapkal said BJP rule in the country is destroying democracy and the party has chalked out a six-month programme to protest against it. 'The BJP always talks of a Congress-free country but 40 per cent of its leaders are imported from the Congress,' he said.

Kerala Higher Education Minister, Oppn Leader flay Governor's circular on 'partition horror day'
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Governor's circular to university vice chancellors in the state to observe "Partition Horror Day" on August 14, ahead of the Independence Day was opposed by the ruling LDF on Tuesday, while the UDF said it cannot be implemented under any circumstances. Kerala Higher Education Minister, Oppn Leader flay Governor's circular on 'partition horror day' Kerala Higher Education Minister R Bindu said the circular was meant for creating division among students in the universities and undermine the value and greatness of Independence Day. Leader of the Opposition V D Satheesan, in a statement said the state government should be prepared to ensure that the circular was not implemented. Addressing reporters, Bindu said the circular was an attempt to create division among students about democratic and secular values in the society and diversity which had been the core of the nation's ideals. She said the move was intended to cast a shadow on the valor of great people who had fought for independence. The Governor's circular is meant to incite hatred between communities and create a "poisonous atmosphere" in educational institutions, hitherto not witnessed in Kerala, the minister alleged. She asked the people of Kerala to resist the propaganda against secular values, social justice, and equality at all costs. Satheesan alleged Governor Rajendra VishwanathArlekar was attempting to operate as a parallel system above a government elected by the people. "Any unconstitutional action by the Governor is unacceptable," he said. Arlekar carries the legacy of the Sangh Parivar movements that 'stabbed' the freedom struggle from behind, he alleged and said the former should not forget that he is now sitting in the chair of the Kerala Governor. The Governor should be ready to withdraw from the attempt to mix the politics of division into the secular society of Kerala by abusing his constitutional position, he said.
