"Decision is disturbing, arbitrary," says Malayalam film federation official on 'Janaki Vs State of Kerala', Censor Board row
Kochi (Kerala) [India], June 27 (ANI): General Secretary of the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), B Unnikrishnan on Friday termed as 'distrurbing' and 'arbitrary,' the alleged demand of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to the makers of 'Janaki vs State of Kerala' to change the name of both the film and its title character.
Producers of 'Janaki Vs State of Kerala' (JSK) starring Union Minister Suresh Gopi and directed by Pravin Narayanan have approached the Kerala High Court regarding the alleged unofficial directive from the CBFC.
FEFKA General Secretary Unnikrishnan told ANI, 'We are also not very sure or clear about the issue regarding JSK, the film JSK. But from our conversation with the director, what we understand is that the CBFC is very keen that the name of the protagonist (played by Anupama Parameswaran), that is Janaki be changed to something else. They have some problem with the connotations of the name Janaki.'
However, Unnikrishnan said the film, according to its director, does not contain any specific religious reference or allusions.
'The film doesn't have any specific religious reference or allusions, according to the director. So this decision is really disturbing and is very arbitrary. We are trying to figure out what exactly is the take of CBFC. We expect that they will furnish a show cause in the Honourable High Court this afternoon. After going through, after perusal of that document, we will take appropriate steps and address the issue properly,' sad Unnikrishnan.
The FEFKA General Secretary also expressed disappointment with the alleged 'random takes' on films from the last couple of years. He said that they are ready to address and discuss such a problem with the authorities and the government.
'Our collective has serious issues with such random takes on films. This keeps happening for the last couple of years. So we need to address this issue at length and speak with authorities, and speak with the government. We, our members, should have proper guidelines to rely on. The guidelines, what we have now, are very generalised. And the members can interpret those guidelines at their will. So I think the guidelines should be more focused, specific and clear,' he said.
Unnikrishnan further said that FEFKA and South Eastern Film Critic Association (SEFCA) are planning to plead in the petition filed by JSK in the High Court, however, he said 'it's a little too early for that.'
He said, 'We are planning to plead in the petition to be filed by the producer in the High Court. Both SEFCA and the Kerala Film Producers Association. So that is a very symbolic protest. We want to address this issue in the public domain and also initiate a discussion on this public domain. So that is a very symbolic protest which is going to happen on Monday. We had a discussion with almost all political parties. And they all feel that this issue was quite unfortunate. Hopefully, in the next week or something we can take those discussions forward. But this is too early to say anything about it.'

US President Donald Trump on Friday expressed hope that the United States would negotiate a trade deal with India that would eliminate existing barriers and allow greater access for American businesses. Trump added that the US wants a complete removal of trade barriers, which he described as "unthinkable" and admitted he was not sure such a deal would be possible. "India, I think we are going to reach a deal where we have the right to go and do trade. Right now, it's restricted. You can't walk in there, you can't even think about it. We are looking to get a full trade barrier dropping, which is unthinkable, and I am not sure that that is going to happen. But as of this moment, we agree that going to India and trade," ANI reported, quoting Trump. Trump also said that within the next week and a half, the US will send letters to various countries detailing the tariff rates they will have to pay. "We have made a deal with China... We have 200 countries plus. At a certain point over the next week and a half or so, or maybe before, we are going to send out a letter and talk to many other countries. We are going to tell them what they have to pay to do business with the US," ANI reported, quoting Trump. He was responding to a query on US reciprocal tariff deadline. Trump said on Thursday (US local time) that America has signed a deal with China and hinted that a "very big" deal with India will follow soon. Trump made the remarks while speaking at the Big Beautiful Bill event. In his speech hinting towards trade deals, Trump said, "Everybody wants to make a deal and have a part of it. Remember a few months ago, the press was saying, 'You really have anybody of any interest? Well, we just signed with China yesterday. We are having some great deals. We have one coming up, maybe with India. Very big one. Where we're going to open up India, in the China deal, we are starting to open up China." Trump asserted that deals will not be made with every other nation. "We're not going to make deals with everybody. Some we are just going to send them a letter, say thank you very much. You are to pay 25, 35, 45 per cent. That's the easy way to do it, and my people don't want to do it that way. They want to do some of it, but they want to make more deals than I would do," he said. "But we're having some great deals. We have one coming up, maybe with India. Very big one. Where we're going to open up India, in the China deal, we're starting to open up China. Things that never really could have happened, and the relationship with every country has been very good" he added. However, Trump did not elaborate on the details of the deal signed with China. Earlier in June, CNN reported that the United States and China reached a new trade agreement, reviving terms first agreed to in Geneva last month, after escalating tensions led to a virtual halt in bilateral trade. Earlier this month, while speaking at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said that a trade deal between India and the United States could be finalised soon, with both countries finding common ground that suits their interests. "I think to be in a very, very good place, and you should expect a deal between the United States and India in the not-too-distant future because I think we found a place that really works for both countries." When asked if he was hopeful about the outcome, Lutnick said he was "very optimistic," and added, "It could be sort of the way I come across," he said. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on June 10 that India and the US were in the process of negotiating a fair and equitable trade agreement that will benefit both economies. Addressing a press conference over India-US trade deal and Future trade agreement with the European Union, Piyush Goyal said, "PM Narendra Modi and US President Trump met in February our leaders have decided to enter into a bilateral trade agreement which will be mutually beneficial for both the economies, businesses on both sides and the people of both countries. We are negotiating to make a nice, fair, equitable and balanced agreement to promote business." Highlighting that both America and India are "very close friends, allies and strategic partners", Piyush Goyal said that the trade deal is an opportunity to expand bilateral trade and strengthen the partnership between the two nations. About two weeks remain before the critical July 9 deadline as India and the United States negotiate challenges in finalising their Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) as the 90-day tariff pause period draws to a close. Government sources earlier emphasised that India's national interests will remain paramount in ongoing negotiations, even as both nations work intensively to reach an interim deal before the deadline expires. The negotiations had hit roadblocks, with the US maintaining its demands for substantially reduced duties on American agricultural and dairy products, along with market access for genetically modified (GMO) crops. India is not keen on these proposals, citing concerns over food security, environmental protection, and the welfare of its domestic farming sector.

TMC's Shashi Panja urges BJP to behave as responsible opposition in aftermath of gang rape in law college, assures strict action against all accused
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 27 (ANI): Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shashi Panja on Friday expressed her distress over the horrific gang rape of a student at a law college in South Kolkata. She urged the BJP in West Bengal not to politicise the incident and behave as a responsible opposition. She assures strict action against all the accused. Addressing a press conference, Shashi Panja said, 'There was an immediate postmortem and dissection to look at the names and the religion. You have to condemn the incident. You are now trying to show photographs. Trinamool Congress Student wing is not teaching the students to rape. The police took immediate action, and within 12 hours of the complaint, three people were caught. They are in custody, and the investigation is on. Their mobile phones have been seized, and the victim's statement has been taken. She has named the accused. It has been taken seriously. The BJP cannot even think the way Kolkata police swung into action. They started maligning since such swift action is missing in the BJP-ruled states. If they want to be in Bengal as a responsible Opposition, then they have to behave responsibly.' She hit out at the BJP and accused the Central government of holding the Aparajita Bill. 'The Aparajita Bill, which was passed in our Vidhan Sabha before 10 months, who has stopped it from becoming a law? BJP has put it on hold at the centre. Body of a woman is not the object to do politics. We have to respect her body. Such incidents cannot be used for comparison between states based on the number of incidents. West Bengal is the only state to introduce the Aparajita Bill. In some of the states rape accused have been garlanded. You won't see this in West Bengal. Everyone knows which party does this. When they raise such protests we have to tell them to see that the states where you are ruling how you respect the women. This is a serious incident and full investigation will take place. The guilty will be punished,' she further said. A female student was allegedly gang-raped inside a law college in Kolkata's Kasba on Wednesday evening. The police have arrested all three accused within 24 hours. The three accused, named as Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), were former students or staff members of the same law college. According to the police, the accused named in the FIR will be produced before the A.C.J.M. of Alipore, South 24 Parganas, with a prayer to remand them to Police Custody for the purpose of a proper investigation into the case. The alleged sexual assault took place between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm on Wednesday within the law college premises. According to the official, one of the accused allegedly committed sexual assault, while the others were involved in the crime. The victim's family filed a police complaint against the accused, and the police have taken swift action in the matter. Two of the accused, Monojit Mishra and Zaib Ahmed, were arrested on Thursday, near Siddhartha Shankar Roy Sishu Udyan, close to Talbagan Crossing in Kolkata. Pramit Mukhopadhyay was arrested later the same night at his residence. The police have seized the mobile phones of all three accused. The official had visited the site and kept it under protection till they had done a forensic examination. They requested custody remand for further investigation. (ANI)

Digitisation of ancient scriptures to
Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 27 (ANI): Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday inaugurated Shastra Sangrahalaya and Research Centre in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi and stated that the digitisation of ancient scripture that remains part of India's culture would help preserve the country's heritage and would contribute to its betterment. 'This Shastra Sangrahalaya Research Centre is a matter of pride for us. Our Vedas, culture, and ancient scriptures have been digitised here to make our new generation aware of them and to preserve our heritage. This will further contribute to the betterment of the country. Our Prime Minister wants to make India a 'Vishwaguru'. In this, this centre will be of great value to our Vedas and scriptures,' Shinde told reporters here. He credited several personalities who have pushed for such works, including Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat and Sangh member Bhujang Bobade. The Maharashtra Deputy CM announced that a similar centre would be established in Thane district. 'Bhujang Bobade of RSS gave priority to this work. I thank him and also Mohan Bhagwat that this happened under his guidance... In Maharashtra, also, our Vedas and scriptures will be digitised in every district. A big centre will also be opened in Thane,' Shinde said. Speaking on the recent remarks made by Maharashtra Samajwadi Party (SP) president Abu Azmi, where he compared the Warkari movement to people from the Muslim community offering Namaz on roads, Shinde said, 'Opposing Sanatan is an extremely unfortunate act... I strongly condemn anyone doing this.' Azmi's remarks sparked a major controversy, after which he issued an apology on Monday, clarifying that his intentions were only to highlight that minorities should not feel that there are separate laws for them in the country. 'My statement was distorted and presented in a malicious manner. If this has hurt the religious sentiments of the Warkari community, I completely retract my words and seek forgiveness. My intention was never to offend anyone's religious sentiments,' Azmi posted on X. 'My only intention was to draw the government's attention to the fact that its double standards should not create a feeling in the minority community that there are separate laws for them in this country - whereas our country's Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself says, 'Together with all, development for all, and trust of all',' he added.
