Federer to serve as Le Mans starter
Roger Federer will serve as official starter for this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans sportscar race in June, organisers said on Thursday.
The Swiss tennis great will lower the flag to start the 93rd edition of the endurance race at 4 p.m. on June 14 at the Sarthe circuit in north-west France.
The Automobile Club de l'Ouest invites a well-known international personality to start the race every year. Last year's was flagged away by French soccer World Cup-winner Zinedine Zidane.
"It will be a tremendous privilege to welcome Roger Federer as the official starter of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. His influence extends far beyond tennis," said ACO president Pierre Fillon.
Federer, winner of 20 grand slam titles, said it was a huge honour. "I've always been fascinated by the commitment, precision and resilience it (the race) demands," he added.
Ferrari have won the last two editions. Switzerland's Sebastien Buemi is a four times winner and triumphed most recently with Toyota in 2022.
Other Swiss winners are Neel Jani (2016) and Marcel Fassler (2011, 2012 and 2014). REUTERS

While Yamal, among the favourites to take home one of the most prestigious individual awards this year, struggled to make inroads, Ronaldo pounced on his chance, firing Portugal level from close range just past the hour mark. Ronaldo went off injured late on and neither side could find a winner in extra time, with the game going to a shootout and Portugal netting all five of their penalties to claim the trophy. I want to express my profound frustration and disappointment with the recent removal of locker facilities at ActiveSG stadiums managed by Sport Singapore (SportSG). As a resident of Chua Chu Kang, I have long relied on my neighbourhood stadium for my regular runs. However, I stopped going to my local stadium due to its no-locker policy. I initially thought this was only at ActiveSG Choa Chu Kang Stadium, but imagine my dismay when I recently visited Bukit Gombak Stadium and discovered that it, too, had discontinued locker facilities. In the past, these stadiums provided small locker cubicles for rent at just 20 cents, allowing users like myself to securely store valuables. This was extremely convenient and beneficial for many, as I dislike running with my phone in my hand or carrying valuables in my pockets. I find it perplexing that such a simple yet essential amenity has been discontinued. The absence of lockers discourages me and, I am sure, others from using the facilities and makes exercising less comfortable. I strongly urge SportSG and the relevant authorities to reconsider this policy. Sinner prepares for sleepless night after dramatic loss to Alcaraz at French Open
PARIS - World number one Jannik Sinner said he was expecting a sleepless night after agonisingly letting three championship points slip through his fingers in a five-set defeat by Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final on Sunday.
