Thales Alenia Space and Italian Space Agency to develop first human outpost on the moon
The Artemis project views the lunar surface as a testing ground for later missions to Mars. It has grown into a multi-nation effort involving dozens of private companies - among them Elon Musk's SpaceX - at the forefront of an emerging global space race.
TAS - a joint venture between French aerospace company Thales (TCFP.PA), opens new tab and Italy's Leonardo (LDOF.MI), opens new tab - said the so-called Multi-Purpose Habitation module, a crucial element for a future permanent human presence on the moon, will launch from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in 2033.
"The future lunar module is part of a long-term investment vision that Italy has implemented, enabling (the country) to play an increasingly leading role in the new space race," ASI President Teodoro Valente said in a statement.
The module will deliver "a secure, comfortable and multifunctional habitat module for astronauts, fully compatible with other systems and components", the statement added.
Even when a human crew is not present, the module will be able to conduct scientific research experiments and have the capability to move on the moon's surface.
It will be designed for a minimum lifespan of 10 years, with the first development phase focusing on technologies that will be subjected to the moon's harsh environmental conditions, high radiation levels, reduced gravity and pervasive dust.
Under the two-year agreement, TAS will be the prime contractor, working with aerospace logistics and technology group ALTEC, which it owns with ASI, as well as other Italian industries.

The European Payments Alliance (EuroPA) has hit a milestone in its efforts to bring instant cross-border payments to the continent with customers of Spain's CaixBank now able to send money to people in Portugal, Italy and Andorra via the Bizum mobile transfer scheme. 0 CaixaBank and imagin customers can now send and receive money to these countries without using the recipient's phone number, without needing bank cards or knowing the account number. In June, the two schemes said they would investigate a joint offering that would combine their efforts to cover all use cases - person-to-person and commercial payments both online and in-store - across the markets of the participating services.

The Trident Wants To Transcend Tiers I don't know about you, but when I heard that Maserati would be applying the MC-double-digit naming strategy to a new car, I was expecting something as legendary as the MC12, a car that was even more capable on track than the exceptional Enzo upon which it was based. But building a competitive new hypercar of that caliber was too expensive, so instead, Maserati went its own way with the development of the technical marvel that is the Nettuno V6 and the MC20 in which it first found a home (now the MCPura). The engine has since been democratized across Maserati's range, and with both the basic chassis and engine there for Turin's taking, Alfa Romeo created a more exclusive supercar called the 33 Stradale. As collaborative the ties between Stellantis' Italian brands to date, they'll be strengthened next year with a potential flagship GT supercar for Maserati, reports Autocar.
